The Definitive "Can't Patch"/"Update server connection failed" thread.

The Problem: I've just downloaded the new client (296) and I need to patch up to 299. Install goes flawlessly, all files are verified (twice) and then when I try and start the game, nothing will download. It acts like it is trying to download, but every few minutes it tells me that it failed and asks if I would like to retry. Sounds pretty familiar. So I hop on these boards and spend the next several hours looking for fixes which all of which are listed below.

1. "Do the manual patch" - Client responds "Update server connection failed". Why do I need to connect to the update server if i'm patching manually?

2. "It's your firewall" - Disabled all firewalls virus protection spyware etc. no benefit.

3. "You need to: Disable UAC, Have admin priv. run as admin" - Set the folder as allowing full control, I am admin, selected run as admin, selected "run in compatibility mode win xp sp2" none of which worked.

4. "Sounds like a router/network problem!" - Downloaded/installed/ran on my girlfriends laptop. No problems (Used crossover-games to install on her Macpro OSX)

5. "Verify your files" - Aside from verifying prior to install and after install (which both had 0 problems) verifying from the patch window results in the "Update server connection failed" error.

6. "You need the chinese language pack" - I have both the simplified and traditional chinese language packs installed.

7. "You need a clean install" - Tried it 4 times with 2 different clients. One from the torrent, the other from the direct download.

8. "Restart your computer" - Yeah.... didn't help.

9. "Just let the patcher run forever and eventually it will connect" - After it ran for 9 hours, no progress had been made.

10. "Post everything you have done on the tech forum and pray that someone will help you!" - That's where I am now.

I'm running window's vista ultimate with full updates. I played perfect world on this machine prior to installing vista (back when I had XP) and never encountered any issues, so i'm certain it isn't a hardware thing. I also am using a DSL connection, so it's not a "your connection is too slow!" thing. Right now I'm at a total loss as to how to get this to work without someone posting the updated files for direct download.

    It'll be helpful to us if you tell us some of your computer's information.

    1) What is the make and model number of your computer?

    2) Please also tell us whether you are running a 32bit or 64bit version of Windows. You can find out in Windows by going here: Start > Control Panel > System & Maintenance > System. Then look under System > System Type. It will then display 32bit Operating System or 64bit Operating System. Include that info with the info we ask for below.

    3) To create a dxdiag log, go to Start, click on Run, then type in dxdiag and press Enter. Click on Save All Information as a text file (on your Desktop as an example.
    If you are using Vista or 7, go to the Start Menu, click on the Search menu and type dxdiag.exe.

    4) Copy and paste the top half of your dxdiag into your forum post (that means 50% of the text). If you have Vista, please take out the (TM) (the trademark symbol) out of the text file, as the forums will cut it off and won't display the rest of the text.

    If you have a 64bit system, please click on the 64bit Dxdiag/DirectX button to save the correct log file. This is important so that we can help you find the right software for your system.

    I downloaded the client from both the torrent and the direct download. Neither worked.

    I have the most up to date drivers, and I use google chrome as my browser.

    This might be more helpful than my specs.

    Try Firefox or IE8 with the latest version of Flash and Javascript enabled.

    Also try using uTorrent to download the game with.

    I already downloaded it via torrent. It downloaded fine and installed fine, the issue is that I can't connect with the update server for some reason. I did direct download too which went just fine and installed fine, verfied all my files fine all "OK!". The issue arises when I can't connect to the update server and when I try to manually patch, it tells me that I need to connect to the update server anyway, even though I have the 296-299 patch sitting in my downloads folder. Is there anywhere I can download the files which were patched with the last version and then just friggin paste em' into their respective PWI folders?

    It might be Windows, Admin, UAC or antivirus settings that you will need to change so that they aren't blocking the game.

    Please Search our Knowledge Base for the terms mentioned above.

    lol check my op for everything that I have tried. I already tried the UAC disable as well. I disabled it the way it was described within your stickied post. The game is even installed in an unregulated (My games) folder so even if the UAC WAS enabled (which it isn't) it shouldn't prevent any kind of changes to that folder. I am also an Admin and running the patcher as an admin (rightclick --> run as admin)

    Edit: Virus protection (avast) is disabled entirely, windows firewall is disabled entirely, UAC is disabled entirely.

    I can launch the elemental client (elemental.exe) but once it launches, I can't connect to any of the servers.

    There is something we are both missing somehow.

    Did you update your drivers? Are you positive there isn't any newer drivers other then 2008 video drivers and 2006 audio drivers?

    Update the motherboard and network drivers?

    Review the networking info in our FAQ or Knowledge Base to see if any of those links helps you figure this out.

    Yeah my drivers are the most recent. Even if they weren't, i'm not sure how an outdated audio or video driver would prevent me from connecting with the update server. If it helps at all, I can play other MMO's like

    Audio and video drivers can help in multiple areas relieving your CPU and system resources from having to work as hard if there are errors. Especially since so many functions are integrated onto the same motherboard or IC.

    The only hiccup I see is the

    Which shows it as being owned by XO Communications in VA. Maybe a weak link?

    Try doing more tests with http://ping.eu/

    Try connecting to one of our other servers and see how it works out for you.

    I'm going to try and install virtual PC to run XP inside of vista. Maybe pwi just hates vista?When I had XP I didn't have these problems.

    hey im having the same problem. but the only differance is i dont no wat any of you are talking about.... im just 15. um i played it untill like the begining of the school year then took a break. now i want to start again but i cant update just like corrence, any suggestions?

    i also have the same prob,it used to work fully and i haven't played for a week because of vacation and when i come back it says cannot connect to update server.i tried manual patch and no luck even when it's version is up to date... and i kno my internet is working... plz help meb:cryb:shockedb:surrenderb:sad
