PW on Win XP Pro x64 Ed?

I've searched around for an answer and even tried the tips for Vista and 7 to no avail.

Does PW run in Windows XP Professional x64 Edition? And if so, can anyone who is running it successfully give me some tips?

When I start PW I can log in to my account, and select a character, but when it gets to "Entering Perfect World..." it then crashes in an undignified manner.

I've tried installing to \games as recommended. I have administrator privileges. I've tried all the compatibility modes. Game files have been verified.

Basically, I've gone through this thread: http://pwi-forum.perfectworld.com/showpost.php?p=741681&postcount=3 systematically and attempted to follow these suggestions to the extent capable by XP.

I suppose I should add that this computer when running the 32 bit version of XP Pro ran flawlessly on all settings maxed.

EDIT:

Okay, to make a long story short. I followed the instructions here: https://support.perfectworld.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=15058 then go: "Knowledge Base > Perfect World Entertainment > Technical Support > How can I play the game on older hardware or with integrated graphics?"

That enabled me to log in successfully. After hours of logging in and out and fiddling with each setting in turn I've discovered that I'm able to play with some stability using the settings shown in the following snip from "systemsettings.ini":

Update motherboard and CPU drivers, update audio drivers, update to the latest version of DirectX 9.0c which can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en

The Phenom triple cores can have some hiccups, so if there are any optimizers or updates for it, get them.

I highly suggest moving to Windows 7 64bit. x64 XP was made for mostly commercial/business/server use, not consumer/home/gaming use IMHO. Plus finding drivers for it all the time is hard and will get harder as MS has stopped most support for many flavors of XP and will stop by July and later this year.

Looks like I trusted the auto-update feature and believed those were the latest drivers for my sound card. What was I thinking? So I downloaded the most recent ones manually.

As far as I can determine I've installed the newest system drivers from Gigabyte's web site.

And while writing this the new dX is downloading. I'm crossing my fingers.

Your recommendations about upgrading are taken under advisement, however I'm intrigued to see if I can get it to work.

We don't have a way to test it here at the office, but other players have reported success with 64bit XP with no issues. It is often the drivers that have issues with that version of XP.

Okay, new drivers made an improvement.

I installed my CPU driver from AMD. Those came on my MB disk, so I was under the impression that they would be included with the chipset driver from GB. So that's sorted out. Sound card updated, and DX 9c installed.

Now I can play with max settings. I just can't start the game up with them. What I have to do is put the settings on min before logging out so it doesn't crash when I log in again.

Before it would crash when I increased any of the sliders even in game.

I hope I'm not too confusing there lol.

Oh and I'll paste my new dxdiag in the original post rather that repeat it here.

Edit: Too bad there isn't a spoiler tag to collapse the dxdiag.txt behind a [+] or whatever.

Almost forgot again -- do you think rolling back to older nVidia drivers is a good idea?
