I need an opinion on a backup pet. Sometimes, my Glacial Walker will die in the heat of battle, usually in an FB or BH. I'm looking for a good pet to serve as a backup. I've ruled out a second Glacial Walker and a Torngirn Warrior / Magmite, as I Don't want 2 of basically the same thing. I want something different.
I've narrowed it down to either a Seamonster Guardian or a Guardian Wolf. Or, if somebody has a better idea, Can anyone give me some stats, for level 40 and beyond? I'm guessing the wolves have better skills, starting out at a higher level, but I'm also looking at stats, such as the Dark Wanderer's high attack score.
So, thoughts?

The ranged eldergolth is actually a fairly decent backup tank. It's not as good at tanking, but it's also useful in a few places the tank isn't. It also has roar, which is really useful when taking over for a dead tank, since i grabs aggro immediately.
Wolves are a pretty good choice too - I like the wolves.
I've not tried out the new tideborn DD pets, but they're meant to be pretty good.0 -
I've added the Tabby Plumdrop and Cuddly Pup to the list.[Insert pithy quote here.]0

Have u tried taming the monsters u fought especially those wolf kins and wolf masters or any other thing in the wolf category or those magic monsters,,,although i am not sure u can tame those(for example those Ghouls).b:victory
GOOD LUCK0 -
Uh-huh, that's elementary. It's a question of deciding which pet to tame.[Insert pithy quote here.]0

I'd go with the cuddly pup. I use that as my main pet, and I don't need a backup pet. It starts with flesh ream, bash, threaten, slow, and has all around good stats, so you should be fine with it.It's not my job to shut you down on a suggestion. It's a pleasure, though.0

Back up tanks aren't worth the pet bag space or leveling time. If you fail, just reset the boss and start again.Be kind: Help the GMs to depopulate the servers.0

As Vitenka said, it really depends on what you want your backup pet to do.
The cuddly pup and tabby plumdrop are basically slightly less squishy kowlins which do a bit less damage (tabby is between the pup and kowlin in terms of stats (except speed, it's the slowest out of the 3)). The pup, tabby, and kowlin are also pretty fast and the damage they do isn't bad either. All 3 are a bit too squishy for my tastes though (even the pup).
A shaodu makes a great backup tank but is severely lacking in damage. The shaodu is my pet of choice and as long as you teach it bash and keep bash and flesh ream leveled then you shouldn't have many issues with stealing aggro. You already have a tank pet though so unless you want to replace it, stay away from a shaodu. =/
Moving onto the pets that aren't rare, some of the higher level wovles come with some pretty nice skills. I can't remember off the top of my head though since I eventually ended up trashing them in favor of the more generic pets.b:surrender The wolves are, overall, well-rounded pets which don't excel in any areas but also don't have any glaring weaknesses. There are 4 different 'families' of wolves; each have their own growth charts so a higher level wolf can have better stats in some areas than a lower level wolf of a different family.
The benefits of an eldergoth marksman have been debated to death so I won't even go there but, needless to say, it does come in very useful in certain situations.
The scorpions (and apparently the dark wanderers now) are great for DPS. You can either load the pets with damage skills (bash, flesh ream, and the elemental bashes) to maximize their damage or you can give them debuff skills (pierce, howl, and threaten) to help your squad (also, shriek is damn useful if you can get the timing right). This alt has been brought to you by lkurei - Harshlands.

You could go with an Eldergroth Warrior and I don't think this person is talking about bosses.
The cuddly pub can be expensive as well as the rest of the rares.Looking for a decent casual understanding Faction.0 -
I personally believe "backup" to be something of a superfluous role. Let's say you have an Herc, a Walker simply isn't going to cut it as a replacement. Chances are you're better off using hood to res. The opposite scenario (having the Herc as backup) would be wasteful and unefficient. Yes, the exceptional veno will have an Herc with blessing...
If what you need is just a pet that you can summon fast to jump back into action then certainly any pet will do and you're better off having a specialist, like Tweakz' beloved Eldergoth.
Having said that, if you do feel the need to have some sort of backup try to get a pet that can fill in for a couple of roles. A walker can handle both the jobs of tank and dps for instance, so if you use other pets primarily for those roles it would certainly make a good backup.
The Guardian Wolf (slightly better stats than the Lupin) should make a better backup than the Pup because ressilience is more likely to be useful in an emergency than damage. They can both be used for pulling.0 -
yes he meant u reset boss in case ur pet dies.
u can always cast hood too,and rez ur pet.channel gear would help there too so u dont take forever to rez and heal it since hood dont lasts long.and its not really safe if ur not alone in party, boss will go after those who make most dmg 1st so only way u can avoid that is that they stop dd while u rez ur pet.
pay attention and dont go afk with macro..i hate when people do that b:surrender0 -

what I think teaks meant was, if your pet died on the boss, most likely your backup pet will die even faster. (unless you have 2 hercs, and the backup herc has Roar)
So, brumble up, revive your pet, and send it back at the boss and pray. Good chance is you will get killed before your pet regains aggro, unless it has Roar. As you get killed, it resets the boss anyway.
So what tweaks was saying is skip the part where you loose experience or use up a angel and just run away until boss resets, than get your pet revived and try again.
Exception to this would be if the boss has less than 50k life left, than there is a good a chance you may be able to survive a couple of hits and last long enough to kill it.Too often we loose sight of life's simple pleasures. Remember, when someone annoys you, it takes 42 muscles in your face to frown, BUT, it only takes 4 muscles to extend your arm and slap that mother#$@%#^! upside the head.0 -
Oooohhh, I think he misunderstood. My pet never dies at the boss. My barb friend always takes the aggro there. What generally happens is either I get stupid and forget to heal my Walker, or he dies from some unexpected occurance like my inadvertantly drawing 4 mobs in a dungeon. In which case I typically send my Walker in to distract them long enough for us to get away ... in which case I need another pet and quick, and I need my mana as well.
It's not as situational a scenario as it may seem.[Insert pithy quote here.]0 -
In that case, really any pet will do. At bosses a specific set of pets is preferable but for normal (or elite) mobs any pet with 500+ loyalty and at your level is sufficient. Get a guardian wolf, they look badass.b:sinThis alt has been brought to you by lkurei - Harshlands.

I already have a Snow Hare for my luring, one which I'm quite fond of. You forget, this is supposed to be my backup battle pet.[Insert pithy quote here.]0

How many times does your pet die and where does this happen the most in instanced areas or in the open world? What lvl is your pet heal at?The only time my herc died is when it or I let it get to close to world boss the one in swamps.
What pet did you have before the Glacial Walker and how did it work out for you?Looking for a decent casual understanding Faction.0 -
Well, it doesn't usually happen in a specific area. It's usually due to my own idiocy. For example, it'll happen when I accdentally aggro 4 or 5 mobs in an instance because I didn't see them around that corner, or when I decide to push my pet to see exactly what he can do (happens waaaaay more often than you might think, especially in the open world). Also, sometimes I'm an idiot and don't pay attention to his HP, in which case he'll die and leave me in a tight spot.
My pet heal is maxed for my level, and I've had my Walker since level 19. Before that, I forget what I had, I kept catching new ones every couple of levels cause I was an idiot. :-x[Insert pithy quote here.]0 -
I wouldn't be that harsh on yourself afterall it is just a game anyway atleast you know what you were doing wrong.you want to pay attention to your radar in instanced areas and never let your pet fight to many mobs in the open world.I do hope you keep its loyalty past 70% and use a tome of retribution flame so you don't have to feed it all the time.
I don't think you need a back up just be more carefull it is like me I still have my C-Mag in my bag but never use it and sits at lvl 47 .My Veno is 54 with Herc. being the same lvl.I never use my C-Mag it is why I don't need G-Walker.Looking for a decent casual understanding Faction.0 -
How do I get this Tome of Retribution Flame? I'm still a bit confused on these tomes. How much to the pieces cost?[Insert pithy quote here.]0
-
Actually any tome will suffice, they will all keep your pet fed. If it dies you will still need to feed it to get it's loyalty back up as normal but you won't need to constantly feed it every 5 min. I just recently bought a Christmas tome for 700000 on HL but prices do vary. Hope this helps.0

Here is everything you want to know about tomes and the fragments can be bought at catshops might want to look for pages. The AH will have tomes there as well.

A tome really comes in handy for a veno. Get one if you have the money to buy one, it's worth it in the long run, because you won't be having to feed your pet just because it gets hungry. 1 more extra inventory space in your bag as well :O0
-
But is the tome really worth it? I mean, even just a 700k Christmas Tome, it's still pretty danged expensive. It would take me nearly 3 years (about 140 weeks) to spend that much on Pure Water. I'm just wondering if there isn't a better place to spend my money, like on shiny new weapons (and/or armor).[Insert pithy quote here.]0
-
By using tome . .
At last the pet loyalty won't lowered because their hungry. (only by died)
Once before i am also think its better to just give them pure water.
But after click pure water shortcut for thousand times, i just use tome.
Yay, i don't have to click that pure water icon every 5 minute anymore. b:bye[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

For normal pets - no, a tome probably isn't worth it.
The legendary pets have special dietary needs - and there it becomes worth it much more quickly.0 -
