400 Pdef, or 200hp?
I'm thinking of switching from citrines to garnets in one piece of armor.

Depends entirely on what your hp/pdef is now.
BTW how does 400 pdef translate into 200 hp, the +mods on the shards are nearly the same

Well then you might as well include cleric buff as well, no? It's somewhat suicidal for mages to do anything without buffs.

I hardly ever had buffs... but you're always self buffed

I would say from lv. 96+ you should have already decent amount of p.def so from this level I would go +200HP.

Sorry I have been sick the last couple days, hadn't had time to respond.
My current pdef fully buffed is about 5k. I have 4.6k hp unbuffed.
Now would I be better off keeping my 4.6k hp and current pdef? Or switching out some shards on one piece of armor, which would bring my pdef up 400 points, and my hp down to 4.4k?

High Pdef without HP is useless.
High HP without Pdef is useless.

It's best to keep balance between these two.

My idea is to always keep Pdef high enough to have 50% physical damage reduction (selfbuffed only) then put everything else in HP. Other wizards probably use different formulas.

At high 9x or 10x, ~60% pdef is good, after that it starts going up quite slow. Should be around 6k or so, which is what you should probably aim for at those levels. 50% is pretty low...

Anyway, with what you have right now I'd go for the HP. 4.6k HP is low, in my opinion. 5k pdef is okay at 90, especially since it'll go up at 95/96 anyway if you can get event gear. Past 4 belt too.
