You can get items identified at either the merchant npc or at an Elder. Items with additional stats can improve anything from the items endurance (meaning you have to repair it less often) to improved physical or magical atk dmg, to improving your base stats, to even improving your atk rate or spell casting speed.

Just go the elder of your races starter city. He'll have a Identify Item option.

Simple. It all depends on what class you are. If you are a wizard or a blademaster, You'll be going to the human city of Etherblade. If your a venomacer or a barbairian, you'll find your home in the Untameds City of the Lost. For clerics and archers, you'll be going to the Winged Elf home at City of the Plume. And for psychics and assassins, you'll end up in the Tideborns City of Raging Tide. The elders are all there, and there's a quest or two that will lead you right to that one.

Or, if you need to find one without such help, you can use the coordinate assistant. This is found under your minimap. The button that looks like an arrow hitting a cross-like thing is where this is found. Open it up and you'll find a list of NPCs in the area. Double click on the one you want and it'll show you where it is with a dot on the minimap, and a colored arrow like the one that points you to quest goals.

Actually, you can identify at the Merchant NPCs around too. You need to pay 100 coins for any identifying services. Ever since I started identifying at the Merchant, I forgot about the Elder...

And yes, identifying improves the stats of your items. Plus, if you get stuff that people want (crit +x% or channeling -x%), you can sell the item for a good price.

Hello. When I scroll over item or click on it, it shows the weapon/armor stats. Does identifying the object go further than that? Thank you

Yes it does. Some items have an add-on (stat in blue text) that says "Needs to be identified." When you identify the item, than add-on is "unlocked."
