Herc Reasons to Get One Or Not

Might as well make a flaming topic. =D
Well, I have a few reasons for venos not to get a herc. So I decided to let the public decide on their usefulness. Also includes some reasons to get a herc. Note; this is mostly for soloists.
Why Not To Get A Herc
One, when you solo, you don't work with a squad. So, if your an unexperienced squader, you might get the squad killed, as you haven't worked with a squad and don't know what's expected of you. (Yes, even a strong squad can die with a veno that doesn't know how to work in a squad)
Two, faction/friends/etc. may be able to help and make it go faster. Otherwise, your going at a moderate speed.
Three, it's just easier to get a sqaud, rather than spend the money.
Why Get A Herc
One, you can avoid stupid squads. This meaning, ditch being afraid of being with people who don't know what their doing.
Two, you don't have to wait for a squad to come along, you can just go.

I'll probably add much more to this later, just have to go now.

It's not my job to shut you down on a suggestion. It's a pleasure, though.

Not necessarily on being solo, you don't work with a squad. Believe it or not, there are actually quite a few things a Veno with a Herc can't tank on their own and probably by the time they could, they don't really need that mob/boss unless they're doing it for someone else. (That made more sense in my head lol.)
And really, whether or not you get a Herc doesn't really reflect on how well you can play your role in a squad. I've met my share, as I'm sure others, of Venos with and without Hercs who both acted the fool or did their job awesomely.
And I'm not really sure if it's easier to get into a squad if you don't have a Herc. Honestly, I've been seeing more and more WCs or whatever requesting Venos with Hercs specifically...which I don't know why 'cause I think all that really matters is the experience and skill of the Veno...not what kind of pet they have in their bag...though, with the way you put it with that versus getting the money to get a Herc, I can see your reasoning (Unless, ofc, someone is using their daddy's CC or just have a good job or are good at getting money ingame lol).
sidenote: sorry if my text seems jumbled- my head still kinda woozy from an earlier dental surgery lol.0 -
My reply to this topic and any veno out there that doesnt have a herc yet:
Get one, but be sure you are ready to handle the pet. Do NOT get one if you're still unsure how to play your class--- not just in soloing, but especially in squads. Make sure you know how to react if something wrong happens in a squad. Your herc is a very good asset to the squad. However, remember that a pet is only as good as the veno, or its controller.>.<0 -
I would say the best reason not to get an herc is the investment/time involved. Ofc if you strongly believe you'll make it to endgame then the effort is relatively small when compared with acquiring endgame gear. Still i'm pretty sure a lot of people missed a lot of fun by investing too much of their time in this game just getting an herc.
Having said that, personal choice remains a very legitimate argument. I myself simply dislike the blubber boy. For both aesthetic reasons and bad ingame associations... Doesn't mean i won't recognize it is the absolute best pet you can get in the game. As a tool it simply has no substitute and deciding against one does mean living with the consequences of said choice.0 -
The only thing I really actually agreed with in the OP was this one:
"Two, you don't have to wait for a squad to come along, you can just go."
Otherwise, I sorely disagree with not working with a squad. I've met a good handful of venos who like to rambo **** and get the squad in trouble, and they get rightfully ostracized. However, it's highly untrue, and herc veno's really only have trouble, in my experience with first time herc venos in their first BH instance, controlling their pet, which is why they tend to have issues at fist. Especially those venos who went into their 80s and 90s without a herc, getting one is almost a completely different game for them and opens up a lot of doors that were not open.
There really is no negatives in having a herc, unless you blew your rent money on one.0 -
ya cuz everyone can aford a Herc... my veno is probly gonna be one of the very few 80-90+
"noob" venos without one -.-.. Not that i care anyway lol.. Im in it for the lulz0 -
Reasons to get a Herc:
- you can solo more of the game with one than you can without one.
- more soloing means more drops and loot for you (no dividing it up amongst a squad).
- you won't have to seek out squads as much as you would if you didn't have one (a blessing when you've experienced your fare share of fail squads).
- solo TT runs. 'Nuff said on that one.
- With a Herc, your gear could be **** (like mine) and the game will still be easier and go quicker than with any other class.
And the #1 reason to get a Herc: Watching others QQ just because you have one. I love my haters. b:heart0 -
If you're successful at merchanting, there's a good reason not to get a herc; at least not immediately. When merchanting, the amount of money you can make is proportional to your available funds.
Say there's a sale on guardian scrolls, 30% off. You had 700k in coin which you converted to gold before the sale, so you buy 700k worth of guardian scrolls. When the sale ends, you sell them for regular price at 1 million, for a net profit of 300k.
Now say you have 7 mil in coin. You buy 7 mil worth of guardian scrolls. When the sale ends, you sell them for regular price at10 million, for a net profit of 3 million. Same sale, same merchanting tactic, but you've made 10x as much profit simply because you started with 10x as much money.
So if you've managed to save up 70 mil for a herc and you're pretty good at merchanting, you probably don't want to get that herc just yet. If you do, your funds will be back down to zero, and you'll have to work on building up funds from scratch to merchant again. Instead, continue merchanting with that 70 mil. 30% sale comes, you buy 70 mil worth of items, and sell them for 100 million, for a net profit of 30 million.*
You should be able to double your money with a few sales. THEN you can get a herc AND still have 70 mil left over.
*Actually, once you get to this amount of coin, I wouldn't recommend merchanting in a single item. It's going to take you a long to sell that many of the same item, and simply by virtue of the enormous inventory you hold you will depress the market price for quite a while. You want to be merchanting multiple different items.0 -

I wish i had started merchendising earlier. I have noticed the rate at which im gaining on the herc is accelerating as i have more capital to invest in "opportunities".
85 veno that resisted getting the herc up till now because of the price, and i don't like "easy buttons". Eventually i realized the truth, even though i concentrated on playing my class well for 85 levels, I was still a liability, or at lease much less of an asset to MY FRIENDS in high level instances.
But I wouldn't trade my 85 hercless levels for anything. Tought me how to be useful to a squad WITHOUT using a herc.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -
itd also behoove you to check around the market / wc for people searching for odd items. sometimes the ah carries these, and people dont even realize it. the other day someone was searching for curvades on sanc, found quite a few for 10k, made 300k ea off of them.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
advice to fledgling archers:
Going sage is like drunken sex, at first she may look good, but when you wake up the next morning; you'll look at her and go WHAT HAVE I DONE.0 -
Although I'm not planning on getting a herc, I'd like to say this. Every now and then people will sell things in AH for ridiculously low prices. One would wonder what to make of this... just beware of the precautions against sniper bidding... but other than that, it'll be fun. b:laughSyredrae ~ lvl 100 Cleric (main character)
