Wood magic and You

b:surrender So just a pondering I know I ask lots of questions but heres another....
If Venos use wood magic why is it we have no skills that actually look like they would be wood or skills that involve plants.
On the same note why is it the only plant we get as a pet is a cactus? I suppose a answer to that is plants aren't actually pets but why are the tulips getting up and walkin around. I mean we get lots of ROCK pets but really where are pets of our element?
And not to complain but why does PW lack trees? Is there a serious forest that has more then 2 trees per square mile? As a denizen of the wood I demand more wood b:laugh
b:sad and please don't tell me we don't have trees because the people in the pay to play version used them all for their houses so we go without b:cry
As usual its a whim and I need to know what my fellow venos think about such a atrocity. Do we have to get all hippie on them and start a tree farm and get our forests back?

Most of veno's attacks send bugs at the target. I guess the closest element in PWI to bug and parasite is "wood" which I guess roughly translates to "nature".
That and I think venos are supposed to be wood-dwellers by legend.
As for lack of trees... try Sage Heaven. Quite a dense forest there.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -

That's not the only plant like pet we get. Did you forget about the Petalis Hexkisses? They look like flowers :P>.<0 -

Oh geez I knew I forgot something in that post I was going to say those don't count they ain't plants they are plant ladies that float on flowers they aren't really like trees or stuff.
and where exactly is this forest I been in heaven I ain't seen a decent forest even in heaven I am talking about you walk around its trees everywhere not just tree randomly on a wall.
Still even if its nature like you say why rocks? rocks aren't nature............they are rocks. At least give us some kinda interesting lookin thing honestly how do little pieces of bug covered in some kind of energy count as nature or wood.
Eh its all very odd...... Plus why are we sending our souls to people and not stealin them like in the folklore? I mean we can't even bite people we don't have mouths that aren't just painted.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -
I agree with axt, wood roughly equals "nature" in PW and if you look at the elemental wood attack pets get it resembles poison, which could be argued venomous animals obtain from plants. In this logic Venomous is appropiately themed, as are Noxious and Nova. Ironwood and Lucky do seem as straight up wood spells. Which leaves Frost and Blazing. While they both deal wood damage and are "scarab" themed, it should be mentioned that their DoT components are based on the elements they represent. Since other than pet skills these are the only reliable source of non-wood elemental damage venos posses, they do seem appropiate.
Both brambles are also wood themed and Foxform skills are based on a "feral" motif which does seem to fit better than wood would, especially since they are based on phys damage.
The system does have internal self-consistency as far as these skills are concerned, and our game's lore westernized Werefox as Venomancer for good reason. Natural toxins or poisons do seem to fit better into wood than in any other element.
Edit; Venomancers are not meant to be the werefox of Chinese lore even if based on them. I certainly don't remember ever reading about Winged Elves in Chinese mythos, so it's better to consider PW as it's own ethos and not a literal translation of Chinese folklore.0 -

Rocks are too part of nature. Anything thats not synthetic or "man made" is part of nature. I dont think men invented rocks. and by "men" i dont mean the gender, but mankind, as in human.>.<0 -
mhm mhm but how exactly do bug represent nature in at least in my mind bug are as far from nature as one could think. If its poisons thats our forte as you say then it certainly shouldn't be wood damage it should be called something else to be sure.
b:shutup and that green tutu is not wood themed except when its putting itself on the target. The hood when you start the skill its the only time it looks like it could be wood based. b:surrender the only thing wood themed about veno skills is the names the actual skills don't even compare. Well that is except the gas the gas is a good skill it actually looks like it had some thought to it.
b:infuriated This is not the point though we are not called bugmancers we don't use Poison type magic we are Venomancers meaning we use poison like magic that is suppose to be based in Wood type magic. We disrupt the enemies souls curse like a sailor and poison our enemies with magic. We are hardly feral beasts but our small figure belies our intentions.
That is what a venomancer is................
No but man didn't invent metal either but its a element rock seems more like the metal element. What I am getting at there should be more pets that aren't rocks, little fuzzy idiots, or creepy crawlies.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -

Since we cannot create anything, only transform, even synthetic materials are made of natural stuff, so, when it comes down to it, everything is natural. Even asphalt occurrs naturaly in Los Angeles at the LaBrea Tar Pits.Too often we loose sight of life's simple pleasures. Remember, when someone annoys you, it takes 42 muscles in your face to frown, BUT, it only takes 4 muscles to extend your arm and slap that mother#$@%#^! upside the head.0 -
It has to do with altering something that exists to fit it to what the game needs. It's a word that doesn't translate well, nature is ok but not perfect, nor is wood, tree is close but still not perfect. It's traditionally translated wood but like I say there's just not a great way to translate it. The actual element has to do with growth, springtime, wind, etc.
When you get to trees and wood, well they have beetles in them. Plants also make some extremely powerful poisons, so in general the abilities of the veno do fit in a general sense with the wood element.
When it comes to frost and blazing scarab well quoted from the wiki entry on the element, "In the regenerative cycle of the Wu Xing, Water engenders Wood, as rain or dew makes plant life flourish; and Wood begets Fire as fire is generated by rubbing together two pieces of wood."
It's a stretch but water helps wood(ice/frost) and wood creates fire(blazing scarab).
So it's not like they followed the chinese elements 100% perfectly, but it fits without too much of a stretch to it.0 -

Animals, including insects, are as good a representation of nature as anything i could think of. Would hurling small representations of the planet Earth seem more appropiate to you? And what would wood based skills look like to you? Venos swinging baseball bats?
b:infuriated This is not the point though we are not called bugmancers we don't use Poison type magic we are Venomancers meaning we use poison like magic that is suppose to be based in Wood type magic. That is what a venomancer is................
Three of our caster damage skills are DoTs, while a further three have timed effects. The only skill that doesn't is called venomous, so i think the "venom" motiff is well represented. And yes, we are not "bugmancers" but all of our scarabs basically share the same animation and are themed accordingly. And where did you get this soul disruption thing? The only skills that even resemble that are Foxform. We basically throw magic parasites as casters, that's it.
No but man didn't invent metal either but its a element rock seems more like the metal element. What I am getting at there should be more pets that aren't rocks, little fuzzy idiots, or creepy crawlies.
Metals are mostly found as part of oxidized compounds in many minerals. With a few exceptions (such as lodes of gold and silver) this is basically ROCKS. Metal is traditionally considered the antithesis of nature however, as it can only be obtained through industrial process, which is the reason the game's elemental system considers it separate from the Earth element which, btw, is the Magmite's elemental attack. To clarify, Wood represents LIVING nature as opposed to Earth which represents innert matter (the soil, rocks, mountains), and Metal which also stands for magic and electricity. I can't figure out how you consider this related to pets (it is only mobs themselves that may be associated to different elements) but PW's remains one of the most complete pet systems and cannot be reduced to just your description. BTW some of us venos do use little fuzzy idiots.
It's really not that hard or anymore incongruent than any other fiction works, most of the world's religions included.0 -

LOL funny
manray your not very fun man and the disrupting the soul is purging among other things.
Nah wasn't thinkin of that ax more of thinkin this http://www.alexross.com/CP1289-Pretty-Poison.jpg I know full well its PW its makes its own rules but you tell me to not think of it in the Chinese sense and you are making examples out of the Chinese sense make up your mind. Stop trying to say we are bugmancers I am saying wood says we are not bugmancers I am poking fun at it being wood and not using any wood based things. Maybe a wood based attack like this http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/naruto/images/thumb/0/01/Demonic_Illusion_Tree_Binding_Death.JPG/300px-Demonic_Illusion_Tree_Binding_Death.JPG (don't qq about the image its just the best thing I could find to represent my thought.)
Since we are the only ones with wood element wouldn't it just be better to rename it nature if people are so hung up on thats what it is. I hate that we hurl little bugs as almost all of our skills I like nova I like gas I like the first scarab even lucky can stay but the others have to be something else. Having more then two of the same kind of skill is stupid. If its going to be a parasite make it have some different kind of thing. Like ironwood could have like a ripple effect on the target if they have to keep the throwing part.
You were suppose to have fun with it not refute that venos use wood magic thats so like not fun. IMAGINE what we could have for instance give ideas other then that we use freakin bugs thats so lame.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -

Some of us like it, it's a fairly creative class with some fairly creative skill in an industry suffering horribly from lack of creativity. It's unique, a class that uses lots of parasites and beetles and stuff to produce magical effects rather than directly channeling magic. I like it, it's not something you see everywhere.
Its not translated nature because that still doesn't encompass the ideas contained in it all that much better than wood or tree. Often times the ideas conveyed in a word in one language is difficult to convey in another and that's what's going on here.
Just because you don't like something doesn't mean everyone doesn't like it too. You can't expect everyone to immediately jump in and say "yeah lets completely redesign the entire class from the ground up."0 -

If you're just goofing up just take my answer in stride and laugh it off. The problem is i really can't tell if you're being half serious and what about? Yea, i agree, it would be nice if we had a better variety of skill animations. You do realize your english does come off a bit as br?
And i do have a sense humour. Although i must admit it's pretty dark.0 -
Chinami go back and read the first post please.
and manray things in which I give pictures are more serious then others. Its not like I ain't being serious cause I am but I am having fun with it. I am in a good mood so I am trying to get you all to think but your all thinking far too hard or maybe its in the wrong direction doesn't matter.
I mean the first scarab if you didn't notice splashes and lucky does something slightly different then that but the rest just do like nothing. :O whats br?[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -
the way i see venomancers, they are witches that can manipulate nature's deadly powers. they can make animals to be their servants, they can bite and poison or make things rot to harm their enemies. they use everything from nature that is deadly, you are not gonna damage someone throwing flowers.0
-
b:shedtear whats with you people and throwing things?[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0
-
Well, we arent completely wood element IMO. Our wood attacks are constricted to human form, but what about our fox attacks? They dont do wood damage. :P>.<0
-
I suppose not its a varying amount of mists that do random effects (almost like poisons xD)[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0
-
Well for example "Befuddling Mist" That to me sounds more like your throwing mud or sand at the enemy, but the description calls it a "Bewitching fog" So, could it be like a green gas cloud? As in made from some type of wood poison?>.<0

br= broken english
Don't mean anything bad by it.
Yea, the skills animation could be improved by being something other than different colored versions of the same thing. We really got gimped in how our skills look when compared to other classes, although i must admit i like the veno's general style the best. Also Nova kind of makes up for it, it's a wicked animation.0 -

Another skill with a wicked animation is Malefic crush. Who doesnt love a demonic, bewitching looking lady coming out of them? :P>.<0 -
venomancer... venom... a variety of toxins used by a variety of animals through a bite or a sting.
who ever said that it was strictly wood based? also...
the game was originally based in chinese and not all translations are perfect and venomancer is not a translation based on what the chinese envisioned the character as. the yao jing is a fox demon similar to the rakshasa in indian cultures. and was not based on what its attacks did.lvl101 LA/AA demon veno ftw, 15251 hp buffed, 13508 buffed pdef in human. able to use tt100 fists at 5 aps w/ genie. all from 2 years of work... WASTED
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
was fun while it lasted0 -
This could explain then origination and where the idea came from :P
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaoguai
I know it says "Yaoguai" but theres a mention of "Yaojing" in there too. Or that it's literally one in the same.>.<0
