Good general/all-around pet other than Magmite

Want to try another shot at Veno and am curious on good general pets as good as (or better) than a Magmite. Mainly want a pet with good all around stats that can take hits and deal damage/hold aggro. Heard decent things about Beetle Kings, Eldergoths and low level rare pets, but am not sure how they hold up and compare to a Magmite.

The magmite has wonderful physical defense for tanking almost any situation and enough hp to soak the occasional magic attack.

The eldergoth ranged pets are a bit high to be considered for an early pet, I'd suggest going with a cactus from the third town (who's name I've forgotten) If you want something that has a good ranged attack and great pet growth.

If you want great damage, the alternate to the magmite that works surprisingly well is a lvl 2 varicose scorpion from the starting area. The DD is highest possible for a ground pet (till expansion maybe b:pleased), the magic defense is considerably higher, and it will gain movement speed every 10 lvls too keep up with you, making it great for general questing.

text book definition of all rounder = shaodu cub
I was early taught to work as well as play,
    My life has been one long, happy holiday;
Full of work and full of play-
I dropped the worry on the way-
And God was good to me everyday.

    Shadou Cub, Antelope Pup, Frogling.
The magmite has high attack, hp, and physical defense stats, where it's low is speed, accuracy, dodge, and magic defense. Of those, accuracy/dodge don't really mean much, and speed is of marginal value for a tank (in my opinion), meaning the only downside to it is the magic defense.

If you add the tiers of stats up (hp, p def, m def, attack only... the others are of marginal use) you end up with, for the top 10 land:
    Herc - 28
    Armored Bear - 22
    Magmite - 20
    Cub - 19
    Antelope - 19
    Wolf 4 (guardian, neolithic, lunar) - 18
    Frog - 18
    Carapest - 18
    Qingfu - 17
    Beetle - 17

So, if you want an all around pet, that's what I would look at. Of those, the lowest levels for each pretty much give the edge to the magmite/cub/antelope/frog. The magmite is the best physical tank+damage, cub is the best overall tank, with less damage, antelope is higher damage/good magic tank... it doesn't like physical hits though, and the frog is pretty much the definition of mediocre at everything.

frogling is the most wellrounded outside magmites. shaodu cubs have **** poor attack, scorpions have lousy defense, etc.

Frogling lacks range including the ability to avoid melee. Shadou Cubs can compensate for atk through skills. Scorpions have great mag def (very close to Herc's Mag def).

I'd consider a Lunar Lupin or Eldergoth Marksman.

frogling is better in almost all stats compared to a shaodu, so why get one? it also comes with debuffs, and starts from a low level, making it a fairly decent pet.

you wouldnt level with a ranged pet anyways, its only useful for luring, frogling is a perfect choice for someone looking for something novelty.

The volcanic magmite's attack has been reduced by approximately 20% in the last week. It is now significantly weaker than an eldergoth. Things that you used to tank with it will now require much more time, mp, and repair cost to accomplish reducing the value of that pet.

Feed your pet. Get its loyalty above 500.

0-50 loyalty: 60% base attack rating, 10% exp for kills
51-150 loyalty: 80% base attack rating, 60% exp for kills
151-500 loyalty: 100% base attack rating, 100% exp for kills
501-999 loyalty: 120% base attack rating, 150% exp for kills

Mech crab is a decent tank had it till mid to late 60's. Before I got the herc in fact I still have the crab use it for pulling from time to time.

ya imo walker pet is better. Not to mention it saves money early on since it has level 2 aggro skill, and level 2 def buff

I kept tough roar and icicle on my Walker. Added Threaten. Basically it can now redice the dmg taken twice. Or REALLY reduce it using that and tough at the same time.
