Hello
I am from Lost City and just wanna know based on their stats (which im too lazy to compare) which pet would be the best magic pet according to speed and mdef. I basically want to end up with second best pet for everything( since i cant afford herc or nix yet b:cry) I have magmite (crystallite) sawfly (pettie) and a lunar lupin

The herc's mdef is actually not that good. If you slap a Protect scroll on several pets, they'll wind up with far more mdef than the herc. The antelope, carapest/jester, penguin, frog, snow hare, certain wolves, bears, and ninetail all have higher base mdef than the herc, roughly in that order. The new ebony hellduke (seamonster guardian) looks like it may too.
As for which is best, it depends. Magic defense is important, but so are hp and pdef for the occasional melee hit. I suggest you look at the following pages which compare different pet stats at different levels, and decide for yourself which you want.

Tweakz will also no doubt recommend a ranged pet. Very few mobs/bosses will only hit your pet with only magic attacks. Most do a combination of melee mixed with magic. However, a ranged pet set to attack from range will cuase many of those combo mobs to attack with only ranged (magic) attacks. The cacti and eldergoth marksman/sharpshooter are your choices for ranged pet.0 -
In the new public quest, there may be some usefulness of a mag tanker. Other than that, a ranged pet would be your best bet because there doesn't even seem to be a handful of mag only mobs/ bosses.
In Public Quest (95+), you need to dig. Most of the mobs around the dig spots are mag/ or mixed mag. You don't need to kill them: just distract them. You're pet can aggro them, then be recalled while you're still digging. This will cause them to only mag attack. Normally, you'd want something that can attack back.
If I didn't already have a Scorpion with Claw, I'd go for a Seamonster Guardian. The Scorp does have higher evasion and accuracy but lower HP and Mdef. The usefulness of just a mag tanker is pretty low, make that extremely low. I'd highly recommend considering Seamonster Guardian or a Scorpion, and an Eldergoth Marksman to fill your needs.Be kind: Help the GMs to depopulate the servers.0 -
Hey tweakz, since we're on this topic already. Are there any say level 80+ ranged pet? Always wanted one but, never had the time/will to spend time leveling a marksman.I was early taught to work as well as play,

Yes, Celestial Sting or Ethereal Inamorato (Eden) have much better range than earlier ranged pets BUT their other stats suck. They're great for luring and very easy / profitable to level on Array Guards in OHT. They can also be used on Harpies in FF/FC.
I have leveled pets for profit / experiment in the past. You may want to check the trade section and see if someone would do that for you. I could get one to 60 in less than 2 days while getting valuable oil, but would want pay also. =PBe kind: Help the GMs to depopulate the servers.0 -

Nah! Just do all your dailies then pester people for FF runs or go aoe grinding or go into OHT. Array mobs are still pretty good exp at that level.0 -
frogling! if you cant afford herc, its pretty well rounded.
i hear this new glacial walker has better mdef than a golem, may make a really nice well rounded pet as well[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

You know, protect is one I've never seen in the auction house.
Most of the other rare skills a few times, but not protect.
If I did get one, where would I put it? Ignoring that I'd probably just sit on it for months and dither...
Humm. I really don't like the antelopes. They're just too fragile, and the situations when you need a pure magic tank are rare.
I think I'd want to put it on one of the ranged pets. If you're using them at range then the skill slots are spare anyway, which makes them good candidates for buff skills. And the marksman doesn't have terrible survivability.
Lacking protect scrolls... I hate to be one of 'those' venos - but save up for a herc. It's just so very very survivable no matter what you throw at it.
In the interim, a more rounded pet is your better bet - watching people use magmites in BH59 is just painful.
The beetles seem to be the most sensible option, I've not squadded with anyone using a scorpion yet.0 -
for mobs that r magic n phys id say the new glacial walker,... great pdef of a magmite, better hp than a (original) magmite, and less squishy vs magic than the original magmite, while also having a good attack-stat,... idk, but imo thats quite good as an allrounder,... (read: if u cant afford a cub, get the walker will be the advice next) (id say get walker/eldergoth/scorpion for all yer needs,... those 3 are the ones im using anyway,...) i just save up airquests n waterquests a while n than i hatch my elysium fowl (not bad airpet,... just dont really like airquests coz mobs come from everywhere; and theyr all large range, so kinda annoying to get agro coz healing pet while a mob u didnt even see was also hitting it0

If you were going to put protect on a pet, my first choice would be an Eldergoth Marksman. Having range gives them the advantage of avoiding melee when dealing with mixed magic/melee enemies. Though, they don't have particularly spectacular magic defense to begin with.0 -

what would u put on an eldergoth than??? since they cant use any bashes or so, coz than they d be getting melee hits,... the hp buff of nix (blessing), the attack buff of nix (claw), the mdef buff of a herc (protect), and what else??? the pdef also??? what other rare one is there available,... (i assume there are no ranged skills for pets???)
(assuming that money etc arent a problem,... coz those scrolls tend to be somewhat expensive)0 -

Well, if money isn't an issue - all of them.
Pdef boost, mdef boost, HP boost and claw.
I suppose there's some wiggle room as to whether you'd prefer the short duration defence boost, or maybe the heal - but then you come to your senses and put the stupidly expensive boosts on
You might want to consider reflect in place of one of them - but since you're using this pet at range and reflect works on very few ranged attacks you're probably better off with the pdef boost. Better still would be to leave archer mobs alone, but you can't have everything.
Edit:
Oh! Maybe keep 'roar'. Because taking aggro from a boss that you need such a hugely expensive pet to tank would really hurt.
... except it's still cheaper than a herc is now. Damn!0 -

was kinda doubting other options,...
first question i had in mind: is bloodthirst a ranged pet skill? or is it melee??? otherwise that might be a funny option :-)
second q: does tough stack with protect??? otherwise,... assuming its only for ranged bosses that hit pet with magic,... another 50% less damage taken for 15 seconds with 60sec cooldown aint bad if ur aiming to solo lots of ttruns or soloing alplaleus or so,...
third q: what range does roar have,... ;-)
if tough stacks with protect than for magicbosses that d be kinda pwnage,... ;-)
something else related to best magic pet,... is there any new ranged pet in tideborn lands,... coz eldergoth only comes at level fourtysomething,... maybe if theres something that starts at level 20 or so, that d pwn even more than the currently known eldergoths,...0 -

But I agree that the ranged pet is the one which benefits the most from Protect, since it would lower all damage it takes from a large variety of mobs.0
