Seems today I was assigned a research project for my choosing in my English III Honors class. I decided to do it on the benefits of videogames, which of course, includes Perfect World, in the end I have to have 7-10 pages worth of raw proof of the value of these games.

But I need YOUR input and help. I need you to brainstorm your ideas on what makes videogames such as Perfect World not only entertaining, but educational. Prove to me that playing this game does have an intellectual benefit.

I'll definitely put in my input as much as possible. Actually, don't be surprised if I counter your argument. Please don't flame me or others, because my arguments are purely made to draw out the raw essence of your claims in order to make them stronger.

hm... things off the top of my head

    1. Stimulates Creativity when it comes to being the "best" at what you do

    2. Establishes friendships around the world, so international relations

    3. With number 2 you are introduced to different cultures, how they act, what are their recutals, etc

    4. Stimulates teamwork for a common goal

those are just off the top of my head

The guy is a "research scientist at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC)" and he has a bunch of great studies centered around MMORPGs. Better than that, he has solid references so you can use his studies in your paper.

Well, for one thing, if in the correct situation, it can help with analytical, and strategic skills. This is done when preparing a party for a long, difficult instance, or if your lucky enough to be in a TW guild, prepping for the fight.

It can also help with economic and financial matters. After all, you gotta know how to earn and save money if you want to buy that expensive new item. Watching gold prices, as well as buying and selling gold can even bee seen as a very simplified (very, very, very simplified) version of the US stock market, for those of us who live in the states (did I mention the very simplified part?). Plus, knowing the best way to buy and sell goods can help prepare a person should that individual want to get into business.

And let's not forget the social aspects. It can help you learn how to deal with difficult people (unfortunately, ignoring a person in real life isn't as good as the blacklist, but it still helps). It can help you learn how to function as a group, both small and large. Plus, there are people who can't get outside much, and so social interaction online in a setting like PWI is a great thing for them.

Hope these help, and good luck on the paper.

I would definitely agree on the teamwork aspect.

As for other games besides Perfect World (unless you plan on writing your entire paper on PW), I'd suggest some that are grounded in history. Assassin's Creed II for example gives you the option of reading about various architecture, people, and Italian history. A person can even pick up a bit of Italian playing the game (in English language and the option of having the game entirely in Italian). Sometimes a videogame can help a person learn a bit more about historical background or be interested in reading about it on their own. In my personal experience, I find myself a bit more inclined to read The Prince by Machiavelli or reread The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri when I see them being tied into videogames.

Sorry for going off on a tangent, but hey, more examples.

I don't see any educational benefits, but there's a lot of social ones, like dealing with a ton of different personalities etc. Um..oh, you can do the economical aspects, like being aware of scams and how the mold prices dropped from the new BH quest (supply and demand).

I was early taught to work as well as play,

Just a few of the things I can think of off the top of my head: math, geometry, creative problem solving, computer literacy, teamwork, setting/attaining goals, prioritization, time management skills, budgeting/financial skills, marketing, good citizenship, social skills. These are all things that computer gaming can teach people. Not all games are created equal in this regard, but most have at least some value, imo. Notice that grammar and spelling are not in my list. b:chuckle
