I was wondering if you needed to be a certain lvl or a certain crafting lvl to dig those old roots and gravel piles etc...

    Yes, they are character level dependent, NOT crafting level dependent. Each tier of a crafting item (roots, gravel, coal, etc) require a character level equal to or greater than a certain amount.

    Keep in mind that you must buy a pickaxe. This is a one time only purchase. You need only buy the pickaxe once and stow it in your bags somewhere.
