Life dropping too fast

I'm not sure what's going on, but it seems that I've done something wrong with my build perhaps. I've been following the standard tanking build, at lvl 21 I have 66 str 16 dex and 38 vit, giving me an unbuffed def of 936 and 1422 HP. My issue is that I can't seem to take even a normal single mob without losing around half of my life. This may be a bit of an exaggeration, but not much. I'm using all of the current gear for my level. Does anyone have some hints about what I'm doing wrong?

Vit is kinda low, looks almost more like a dps build, other than that I'll leave it to the experts

Even with a dps build you shouldn't lose that much from a single mob, unless it's a caster type. Barbarians have extremely low damage and accuracy in the beginning of the game, so it's not surprising that enemies hit you a lot before they die. Are you using a decent weapon? Either the level 20 supply chest weapon or the fb 19 poleaxe?[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

I've got the 20 stash weapon. It just doesn't feel right being a tank that can't tank! Is there a p.def buff that I'm missing or something? I have the HP buff, but that doesn't really do a whole lot when my problem is that I'm losing HP too fast. It's like I'm hemorrhaging from some unseen wound or something.Buknoybobo - Sanctuary wrote: »you got low vit.add a little bit more and wear armor with high physical def.
I'm following the build to the letter. Where do I take the points from to boost my Vit? Do I sacrifice Dex or Str? Either way, I won't be able to wear the most current equip.0 -

They are both right about having low vitality as a tank build, but that's not the only build a barbarian can use. I haven't actually gone back and calculated what your stats are per level, but there has to be something we don't know yet. Are you fighting mobs that use magic attacks? I don't know many mobs below 30 that use a lot of magic. Are you fighting mobs above your level range?
Edit: to your edit: Tell us the stat per level build you have used. I'm too lazy at work to do any form of math whatsoever.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Holy Hell. Where did you find that severely overcomplicated chart?
Build should be flat out 6 str, 1 dex, 3 vit per 2 levels (heavy armor requires 2.5 str and .5 dex per level but axes require 3 str per level as minimum requirements). Many barbs opt to remove a certain amount of points from str and/or dex to put into vit, since gear can be used to make up for the missing amounts. This is especially true at endgame.
Other than that, I don't know what to say about you losing hp so quickly. Stay within your level range and avoid magic using mobs. Make sure your gear matches your level and that you always have a decent weapon.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

I didn't find the chart, actually. I copied the level requirements and made a spreadsheet to find the exact point spread for each level. I thought that by doing that I'd be better off. Now it seems that I may have overthought the process and have shortchanged my vit. So I should be running 6 str, 1 dex and 3 vit per 10 points minimum, right?0

well, if u have followed the sticky build, that is the TANK build, at the beginning isnt that sweet but u can handle...
maybe u look like low HP cuz last 10 level u havent put any cuz of FB polex
the only way (BESIDE SKILLS) to higher ur HP and DEF, is to have nice EQUIP
the advice i can give u is to get some 2*/3* equip which have base defense higher than normal ones (white 1*) and usually have some stat bonus (+VIT, STR and stuff)
another thing,
-use the skill while fightingb:chuckle,
-max the main skills (3)passive, (2)buff and aggro(2) asap
-leave behind the melee humanoid skill untill ur higher (for garrotte, stomp, swell, firestorm and slam level just till L2 cuz is SPR waisted under lvl 70)
-focus on the tiger and get used to tank (alacrity and chi building)
btw i dont usually follow a pattern for stats each level, i just read at the next armor/weapon requirement and i put all into VIT, then when im close to that level i use all the stats for STR and DEX...
i mean if next set of equip ask me to get 16 more STR and 4 more DEX into 10 level, ill pump VIT for the first 6 level and then all the 4 left into STR/DEX[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
...i guarantee you, YOUR CHILDREN WILL NOT SEE THE DAY OF YOUR WHITE HAIRS...GOODBYE BLUE SKY (and PW too)

That's what I would recommend yes. There are plenty of complicated things out there, take simplicity when you can find it.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Also remember that you wont see a big difference in barb vs other classes for survivability for a few more levels. It actually stays pretty tough till your late 40's or so, then you start to notice the godly powers of a tank!0
-
You're probably fighting those mean wolves that cast that regeneration skill they have. You know, the ones next to the barn-type thing. I had problems with those too. You're better off getting a Wizard/Archer to help you. I did that and I flew past my 2x really quick.
If you're taking on them one-on-one, try using Alacrity of the Beast to cancel out their magic attacks.
I'm not sure about the level requirement of the skill, so ignore this
if you can't use it yet.
Also, ask politely for a cleric to buff you. Their buffs truly do help.
I really do emphasize the 'ask politely' part. They really do deserve
respect for the things they do; taking their time and MP to buff/res you.0 -
The problem here is simple - your barb is level 21.
Every class dies easily in the low levels. Once you get a bit higher, the difference in HP you have compared to other classes becomes more dramatic, and you'll laugh as there are 4 mobs attacking you, and the 3 you aren't attacking actually give up and reset because you're just that damn hard to kill.
Good times.
Also, remember this:GohRaL - Sanctuary wrote:the only way (BESIDE SKILLS) to higher ur HP and DEF, is to have nice EQUIP
My barb gets like and extra 1.4k hp from equipment b:victory0 -

Any idea roughly when I should start seeing the difference? After reading some of the other posts again, my sinking suspicion is that I'm just being a little to impatient, expecting too much too soon. Still, if anyone has an idea of when I should start reaping the benefits? (I especially like the idea of the four mobs that can't touch me b:dirty)0 -

You'll begin to notice your high survivability around...mid 30's. The problem in lower levels is that your vit hasn't had much time to accumulate with the hp buff and your accuracy is crappy, causing you to be hit more(blood bath+shards fix this). Use life powders at the apoth and you will be fine.
And once you hit 40+, you will tank mobs like nothing....second wind on my genie is generally enough to keep me alive.0 -

depends (yet again) on mob types. try running solo into a group of pyro's (fire damage can stack pretty fast). Or try running into a group of metal mobs that do nothing but cast if you arent ontop of them.
yeah, alacrity is good for cancelling spells from a single target - but the cool down on it is too long to run back and forth cancelling every single things spell. against pure physical mobs ... barb pwns.
build wise, this is what I follow:
(dunno where that chart came from, the numbers seem to be a bit off)
STR = your level * 3 + 2 (requirement for axes, always follow this number for str so you can equip your TT axes on time. as a tank - no need to add more)
DEX = your level / 2 + 4~5 (requirement for at level armor and weapon)
VIT = remainder of unallocated points.
Once your stat numbers fall in place with these equations - it becomes the good ol' 6 str, 3 vit, 1 dex per level. I do 3 str 2 vit on even levels, 3 str 1 vit 1 dex on odd levels.
at level 59, I have 34 dex...
59 / 2 = 29.5
29.5 + 4 = 33.5
round to next whole number = 34
34 dex is what I'll need to wear my next chest piece at level 60[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
