Why We Do NOT Need A New Server, By Sora

Hello players, GMs, and MODs of Perfect World International, as well as anyone else who may be reading this now. My name is Sora. You may know me, you may not. I'm 23 years old and I work as a department and database manager for a chain of retail stores. I am also, slowly but surely, working towards a Bachelor's degree in computer programming, and I have Associate's degrees in graphic design and business management. In my spare time, I enjoy playing Perfect World, among other activities. Lately, I've seen a demand for new servers to be implemented. Since it has been a couple of years since I've looked at information concerning server class computers, I decided to ask John, our IT director, about them during a routine database update.
Sora: Hey, John. Do you know anything about server computers?
John: Our database is kept on a server size computer so I'd say yes. (laughter) What do you want to know about them?
S: Well...how much are they for starters?
J: Ours costs somewhere around $1,500 per month for the hardware and the software is somewhere around $300 per month. I'd have to check with accounting to see the exact numbers.
S: Wow. $1,800. That's a lot. Would a gaming company pay the same amount to have a server like that?
J: A gaming company?
S: Yeah, like those online ones.
J: Oh, well, a server like that sure. But they'd probably be using a more powerful system. Ours is set up to handle numbers and letters and not much else. That's small data. But you know that.
S: Oh, sure. But how much would those gaming servers cost?
J: Those would have to have the power to handle a couple hundred client computers at any given time, maybe more. I haven't really looked into those too much since there was no need for anything like that for us. If I had to guess though, I'd say upwards of $2,500 per month plus $300-400 for the operating system. Why? You looking at getting into that business?
S: Maybe someday.
$2,900 per month for one server. That's a lot of money. But take into account that there are five servers right now. That's $14,500 per month. Just for the servers! There's no way someone can simply toss that money out the window without some sort of income. But, this IS a game we're talking about. Money would have to come in from the players. At this point, my business education is kicking in. Supply and demand tells me that if there are a lot of players demanding to log into the servers, and there isn't enough room on them, then it's time to supply a new server. Of course, that would cost money, which means that in order to make the money to pay for it, there has to be a sufficient amount of players paying to equal or offset the cost of the servers.
And that's where we come to now, the present day Perfect World. At this time, the player base is not growing at a satisfactory rate that would provide enough income to PWI to pay for these costly upgrades. From my point of view, it is more likely that there are more people quitting than there are joining. This would mostly be due to several problems that people find with the game. Adding a new server at this point would not solve any problems, but would rather cause more for PWI and, eventually, the players. It is my conclusion that these problems should be addressed first so that players will come back to play again and more will join. After that, when and if the player population rises to push the servers, we will need a new server.
I kindly thank you for reading and hope that you are now enlightened to the position that PWI is currently in.
Sincerely,
Sora, Cleric, Sanctuary Server

There is a full discussion thread on this....that is all I was saying.
Who thinks we need a new server and why?[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Oh. That one. Yeah, I've posted there already and was flamed and called immature for telling people their reasons for wanting a new server would be unaffected by getting a new server. One man's pain is another man's lol.

Your "Scientific theories" are wonderful and all, but first off, nobody cares about your educational background, especially since it is not impressive. Try being in the Air Force, with the kind of stuff I did. Also, what is it about the prospect of a new server that you seem to HATE? Furthermore, don't say the gms don't make enough to support a new server EASILY. I am from the Dreamweaver server, and there are people like Dragoonz there, who have paid $10,000 into this game EASILY. So your "interviews" of a friend you probablly made up to support your painstakingly one sided views OPPOSING a new server for WHATEVER REASON do not impress. A new server would make things more interesting, simple as that. If you really think otherwise, That is PERFECTLY FINE, but do not go around trying to get the idea murdered in cold blood for those who do support it.0 -
It's okay to disagree with her posts, but just like you are allowed to state your opinion she should be allowed to without being told that she is "trying to get the idea murdered in cold blood". Can't we all just get along? Or maybe just agree to disagree?b:chuckle

Sure, having a new server would be interesting, but the point I'm making is that it isn't practical. One thing you didn't seem to take in is that $145,000 per month is JUST the servers. I didn't include costs for Internet, office space, electricity, worker's salaries and other costs. Honestly, I don't think Dragoonz pays $10,000 per month to play. MAYBE over the course of the last few months. Not to mention that $10,000 isn't nearly enough to pay for entire month of their bills, let alone the past YEAR.
And if you don't mind me saying so, you're coming off as a child that broke a toy and wants someone to give you another when they know you're just going to break that one too. You being in the Air Force (if that claim is even true) furthers that impression, since you don't have to worry about MAKING the money that comes from the government.eatwithspoons wrote: »It's okay to disagree with her posts, but just like you are allowed to state your opinion she should be allowed to without being told that she is "trying to get the idea murdered in cold blood". I would actually support the idea of a new thread, IF they could convince me that one is needed.

I agree with that, besides the last sentence. Greed has nothing to do with it. It is a matter of possible, and impossible. And unless you oracle, it's obvious which one is which. Even on my server-DW... there are already people with the rank 8 weapons, with lunar claws +10... and everything else, including somebody who will get warsoul rather soon. So please tell me, how can us who are not HEAVY CASH SHOPPERS with a ton of rl cash just sitting around during the bad economy possibly catch up, to enjoy the things we like to do such as hmm... pvp? Sure, we CAN pvp, and get crushed. It took me 3 months of playing just about all day every day to get 3 level 70-80 characters. That means even if you self admittedly have "NO LIFE" or in my case are (laid off) You must "WORK" and yes, i mean work, not play... for at least a few months to get to the point where you can begin to enjoy the game at its full entirety. And hopefully spoons is reading this some time soon as well, because I recall him saying they would like to see good reasons why a new server would invoke new/returned interest to the game.0 -

Do any of your posts ever not include the word: "greed"? I swear, you relate EVERYTHING to greed. Sooner or later, you're going to say people walking to archosaur instead of using the teleporter are greedy because they dont support the coin sink idea.
Have you ever thought of other reasons why people want more servers? Such as playing with other lower level players, reaching a goal (like say TW) especially when the tibeborn classes come out. Or, to have a better experience in other activities, such as a chance for TW, starting a strong faction with similar levels. Oh wait, they're greedy because they want stuff for themselves. With your reasoning, EVERY single damned action that a person does is 'greedy'.
Other than that, I dont see the point of a new server. We all saw what harshlands became. All the "hated' players of the other servers rushed there and powerleveled up and made the most QQ filled server ever.I was early taught to work as well as play,

Well, All I want to see is the proof of your claims to the costs of the servers as opposed to the profit. Unless you are an undercover representative of PWI, I really don't see how you could possibly really know. Your whole reason for why you believe a new server to be impractical is based on assumptions, very little, if any actual fact.0 -

I agree with this thread. If the serevers get too crowded then maybe a new server would be good, but for now they are fine, if the one your are in is too much then move to a smaller one!
Also there wont be many people on a new server, so you will need help and not get it, i think people wont level up quicker i think slower, as there wont be many people aroudn to help, they wont move on due to bosses being to tough....
Only make a new server if needed, a new one is currently not needed!0 -

My friend, there is a HUGE difference between having the CHANCE to compete and accomplish something... and greed. Accomplishing something due to your own hard work and dedication does not make you greedy. However, I don't want to have to WORK in a game for months at this point to get to the point where competing or accomplishments are actually POSSIBLE.0 -
Zoe - Heavens Tear wrote: »Well they ARE! People TW for the money rewards and that is about it. Greed
Umm... this is the least true statement. 95% of the people I know do not TW for money. As we lose about 1m each time we do TW. There is no money reward for a small faction doing TW. We do it for the fun of TW. It costs us 5m+ to bid on land (unless you want to suicide and get owned in 5 minutes by the big reddies), then 1m for charm, 1m for towers, repairs, time, waking up at 4am, hp food, apothecary pots, etc. I see no money gains through TW. Take regicide for example, sure I know a bit of TW cash wouldnt be bad, but have they stopped doing TW because they dont earn big bucks? No. Most smaller factions do TW for the pure fun of it.I was early taught to work as well as play,

Alright, I dropped the wrong term in there. I was thinking Need vs. Want since that is what the server situation is. But the two go hand-in-hand. Why should PWI spend money on a server that it doesn't need? That would be like buying a video game instead of food. One man's pain is another man's lol.

i'm not saying we shouldnt have a new server or should, but according to that logic, why do any of us buy anything we dont need? we dont need designer clothes, we dont need expensive cars, we dont need anything except the absolute necessities for life. and yet, you and i still indulge in these luxuries. why is that?
sometimes the reason for something isnt necessarily because its needed.0 -

Because... It should not be only about what the GMs want and what benefits them but also what the players want. I honestly believe making a new server would earn some new players and old players who quit back. On Sanctuary I rarely played, then when Dreamweaver came out I started playing all the time. New servers give a lot of players new reason to play and level up.0 -

First i'd like to say that i am going to refrain from flaming anyone in this post, and this is the only time i will post in this thread.
http://www.google.com/finance?q=NASDAQ%3APWRD
That is a link to the stock page for perfect world company. If you follow it, click on the 1 year button to get a good view of whats been happening for them financially. As you can see a year ago they were steadily declining. until around february, around which time pw released 2 new servers, and then their value steadily rose until about july, when it drasticly rose and has been extremely high ever since. This, i can only imagine is due to the many events they have been holding since that time.
Now i know the servers are not full by any means. BUT, pw can clearly afford to take a little risk at this time. As previously stated in this thread it would appear that their player base actually seems to be declining rather than growing. Obviously this is bad for the company. Clearly many ppl such as myself feel passionately about having a new server to play on, and many of us are leaving the game because of the state of the game on the current servers. Everyone has their own reasons for leaving, but a lot of the ppl that are leaving have said they would like a new server.
So now is the most intelligent time to release a new server to try to keep some of the players that have requested one from leaving, which will benefit them financially in the long run. And since they have plenty of revenue currently due to all the events, it makes sense to do it now.
As spoons asked of us on page 1, i will agree to disagree
Thats all i have to say on the matter, flame me if you disagree, but i will not post here again.0 -
K, first off. 2,900 x 5 = 14,500. not 145,000. All your degrees? I kind of doubt it. My argument? How often you have to correct yourself, how poor your arguments are, and the fact that you don't know what a debate is. Mad at being flamed at? Stop trolling other threads saying that their ideas are dumb just because, having nothing constructive to say, asking people to repeat themselves 50 times, saying you don't have to prove yourself. Yes you can tell me to GTFO. That's why you're immature. Because you can't deal with an argument. You stand for one part of an argument while others stand for the other side. Get over it. Not everyone will agree with you especially if you make immature comments like that, ruining whatever credibility you had left.
People on Heaven's Tear server. For some reason, you guys are incredibly prejudice to the other servers. At least, everyone I have met. Which gives me logical assumption based on that 100% of the people seem prejudice, i can assume all are prejudice until otherwise proven. That being said, your server is established. Fantastic. If you hate DW because we have multiple lvl 100's in 1/4th of the time it took you guys to get your first, too bad. Stop crying. Get over it.
Next, if you really want to make a point, go to the most established thread on the current topic that you're posting about. There, make your point, constructively. Make it new. Don't troll and don't flame. You might even persuade some of the people in support of the new server to not support it. Coming in and saying, not gonna happen, makes us want to fight more. You just don't seem credible. If you do do this, you will be told off. That's just how life works.
That was today's lesson on life kids. Let's be smart, calm, and polite, or at least give the illusion of politeness so a CONSTRUCTIVE debate may carry out. Constructive meaning, building on so it may progress.0 -

Zion has kindly pointed out that number error to me already, thank you. Explain to me why I can't have the degrees that I have. Because if I wasted two and a half years in college to not have the degrees I earned, well, I'm going to have to talk to my college and find out what went wrong. And I'm sorry, but having one or two factions in control of the entire TW isn't just cause to create a whole new server. If they make it so that what happened on other servers won't happen on the new one before opening it, then that's a different story. But I doubt that will happen so I stand by what I've said from the beginning. As for the GTFO comment, that was meant as a joke, but I guess you can't take those very well, can you? No, I can take an argument pretty well. It's just that yours and those of your cohorts just don't make sense. When I tell you that Reason A doesn't factor into a new server, and then explain to you why it doesn't, you just tell me Reason A again. I don't WANT you to repeat the same reasons over and over again. I want you to provide me a different reason why I should jump on your bandwagon. And now, what really bothers me, is your being so hypocritical. You tell me not to post in other threads and tell them that their ideas are stupid when you waltzed right on in to my thread and did the same thing. I think the saying goes, "talk about the pot calling the kettle black." Then, at the end, you tell me to go post in those other threads anyway, the exact thing you told me not to do in the first place. The only immature comments that have been made in this thread have been made by heybigbadj, not myself.People on Heaven's Tear server.
This isn't the place for that sort of discussion. Take it over to the Heaven's Tear forum if you're so disgruntled about it.That was today's lesson on life kids. Let's be smart, calm, and polite, or at least give the illusion of politeness so a CONSTRUCTIVE debate may carry out. Constructive meaning, building on so it may progress.
What part of your post was constructive again? The part where you tell me I'm lying about my credentials or the part where you tell me to get over myself? I think the lesson of life that you need to learn, maybe not today, but some time soon, is you don't always get what you want, when you want it.One man's pain is another man's lol.

Nah, it has nothing to do with the new servers. That was the time they released Jade Dynasty and a another game in the Chinese market.
What you showed there is the stock for the main company in China which has several games in its portafolio.
Check the stock for the most popular MMO in the world
http://www.google.com/finance?q=NASDAQ%3A+Blizzard
Look on the righ side under key stat ratios.
PW is doing much better financialy than the largest MMO company in the world. The profit margins for the year to date for PW are over 50% while Blizzard only manages almost 19%
When PW went public, the stock was trading at 8 dollars a share, today they are trading at 44.3 dollars a share.... The only thing I can say is I wish I had gotten PW stock..... Keep in mind this insane increase in stock value over a one year period happened as the world economy took a nose dive, which makes it even more impressive.Too often we loose sight of life's simple pleasures. Remember, when someone annoys you, it takes 42 muscles in your face to frown, BUT, it only takes 4 muscles to extend your arm and slap that mother#$@%#^! upside the head.0
