So my 2002 compaq pc (POS) piece of ... for those who dont know..


It auto restarted one day, and when it turned back on after the initial boot up, it said "Could not display this video mode"


i cannot boot it in safemode, it shows me a bunch of drives and whatnot, and stops before it fully goes to safemode,

im pretty sure its the dell moniter i have hooked up to it, and the driver info was lost some how..

OR, the thing is a pos and like 7 years old and died.


Any ideas?

    whats your exact computer model? (is the video card stock or upgrade?)

    post a dxdiag video report screen shot:

    start -> run -> type "dxdiag" w/o quotes and press enter

    click the display tab and capture the window, post it here.

    momentarily (if you can get booted properly) try decreasing your desktop resolution.

    i cant get it to boot at all, its super suck **** man,

    i do have a laptop, and a friend is mailing me a new charger for it (Nawn <3)

    And its password protected, and well the means of wich i came across this pooter i dont know the password =D so im gonna have to **** into it, and mcguiver it into working </3

    What OS?

    I assume with the age of it, it won't be Vista. Which is good, Vista is a pain in the **** to get into.

    Trouble shooting computers is one of the worst. One problem could mean 101 different things, but in your case, it's most likely a dieing video card. Check for burn marks or blown capacitors on the video card. If it's on board video, that could be a sign of motherboard issues and you'll need to take it to someone. As far as the password on the laptop goes, if it's Windows XP (Windon't) that's easy. F8 into safe mode and log in as administrator and just clear the password in the control panel, user accounts.

    i opened it up, and it looks like a forest fire ran thorugh it, someone gave smokey the bear a roman candle or something. xD

    What degree of burns? It may need skin grafts.

    ouch... it seems to me your only solution if the inside is fried black like that...lets go shopping for a new computer!!     My price range, will be about 2k come early december, just going to make a beast of a pooter, so it will last me a little while.

    But i do want to get this lappy i have working until i can get a beast

    Get a hd 5870 or crossfire some hd 4870s for a cheaper price b:victory

    Im consol, through and through, so when it comes to buying a new comp, i know nothing.

    im a dell guy, and i like what sony has goin for them, yur going to have to be more specific

    he be more of a console gamer (N64/Wii/Xbox/PS3/etc etc.) Basically he's one of those hey let me get a huge company to design whatever they think me need and me will toss $$ at them kind of person. b:chuckle

    You could get a really strong desktop computer for 2k if build yourself. But somehows me get the feeling you not exactly up for the challange of putting together your own computer. b:sweat

    Well since me make me own PC and not use companies. All me can advise you is to avoid dell & alienware (if you can. if you can't find any others who are better *last time me checked me couldn't find a decent computer retailer...* if you can't they I guess you has to go with them) since they overcharge for shoddy craftsmanship along with pretty bad customer service.
    Also make sure that the videocard is made by either ATI or Nvidia. If the video card has anything to do with the words "Intel chipset"...punch the seller in the face.
    Also make sure you get at least a minimum of 3 gigs of RAM *Me recommend 4 or more gigs though* (DDR3. fast less power consumption)
    As for processors. Either Duo or Quad core at least Quad 2.6GHz or Duo 3.0Ghz for a desktop.
    Those should cover the basics for good gaming quality at least hardware wise. (And for sure is doable with 2k even if they overcharge you. Although these specs should total less then 2k.)

    Now remember these guidelines be like the minimum if you can find a manufacturer offering more for the same price then go with it. d(^.-d)'
