A computer connected to the interet without a firewall and antivirus can be stolen in 10 minutes. A true fact, so that is not so smart if you ask me ^^ there're easy ways to get information from 3rd party computers.

I'd recommend to start using these for your own safety, there's crazy people out there, one never knows.

My firewall is always turned ON and i have two different AV softwares constant active <one of them is AVG which is managed by my OS by the way as primary AV soft> but my reply was directed to poster <tweakz> who says that he do not have any firewall or AV soft active when he use net.

Yes that IS possible if computer is located inside "heavy guarded" network where every connections goes via internal servers so any attack are stopped at those servers before they reach connected computer or by using high security connection.

Honestly i disagree that AV soft makes comp slower but heck i am ready to pay price for a LITTLE slower but secured comp as living in constant risk that i will catch something what could destroy what is stored on my HD or even unknowingly become virus mailbox and spread viruses world around...

Yes, believe the propaganda. Buy antivirus and firewall. Buy buy buy!

Haven't seen a decent free AV since InnoculateIT. (went pay)

b:chuckle Yes tweakz for us regular joes who ain't so tech savy these firewalls are all we can muster to defend against those who are more versed in computers such as yourself. b:surrender we can't all be masters at cleaning our computers like yourself and others. So a bit slower is much better then not running at all.

    just sayin

Actually the tweakz guy has no idea what he is talking about on the website I was viewing. Why would I come on here saying I was at a certain site if I wasnt at that site? I do not have to cover any bases. I am an adult and have no one to answer to unlike some of the players on here. I was searching for pwi related things when I was hit with the trojan. Like I told tweakz, I hope if he goes there he doesnt end up with what I had. b:laughb:chuckle

Firefox blocks ads there everytime I go there. Not at all suprised that it is bugged by them.

Suggestion: >>NEVER<< click on ads. Biggest source of malware/trojans ever seen.

But after the day I have had I am willing to learn a few new tricks. LOL I never click on ads on websites. This one just hit out of no where.

I was a firefox hater at first. Now, I cant stand using any other browser.

Another cool tool is the advertisement blockers, dont ever see those stupid ads.

I am headed there to DL firefox now. There is very little more irritating seeing all the ads on different websites. before anyone blows a gasket, yes I know they have to have income coming in somehow. But I still dont like seeing the ads.

I was the same- family and PC techs kept telling me to switch to it, I stubbornly stuck to my familiar ole Windows Explorer till I got loaded up suddenly with so many trojans and other such poo that I got stuck with a giant bill from the tech for cleaning them out. Plus, it lost me a ton of saved data, so though I still hate tabbed browsing, I hate losing data worse.

I suggest right after installation of firefox installation of three add on for him.
    1. Adblock.
    2. Noscript.
    3. Wot - warns when site have low credibility <and i suggest to heed his warnings>.

Those three add ons are essential for Firefox and after my personal quite long experience whit Firefox and those add ons i must say that so far i have no reason for complains.

By the way there was not to long ago security issues whit two Microsoft add ons <installed without our agreement by the way b:angry> and those two adds were insta blocked by Firefox until Microsoft do not patched one of them, but second add is still blocked so i think that is something what made Firefox rather very trustworthy net browser.

Again, the web runs on ads. Site hosting is not free, and ads generally pay ****. I know, I have a site that gets about 2,000 hits a day. Even if you don't click on the ads, it helps increase the value of clicks. Circumventing ads while using the services of a site is mooching.

got problems with curcumventing ads, go yap at firefox about it.

me, im just glad to not be having the problem the OP had...when i first got online, i used to love to go to sites that had cute little animated gifs to DL. problem was, sometimes those sites would be in europe, and something would grab my browser (Win, of course, at the time), and i would have a sudden cascade of horrifying uberporn windows opening on me, and it would cooky the hell out of me. i never did get rid of all of those hooks those sites put in that PC, and i stll get disgusting **** emails. as a very shaky survivor of violence, its extremely triggering to me, so i completly sympathize with the OP.

So wait.. let me understand... can't use database if we have internet explorer cause it will download a trojan....?

And who in their right minds wouldn't use a firewall and anti-virus/anti-spyware @_@ that's just crazy talk. I've tried not using both and guess what... computer went FLOP. lol. So I swear by them now.

But anyways... again if I go there I'm guaranteed a virus...? or is it just if I click the adds... I wasn't quite clear on how this happened.

The virus is entering via the adds. No clicking required. All they have to do is display. Firefox with a couple of the better add-ons like addblock etc help but an up to date anti virus and firewall will go a long way to keeping you safe.

Updating your windows software (at least once a week, but every day is better) and keeping it updated will also go a long way to keeping your system clean. be sure to do a manual update at least once a week, and update the 'optional updates' as well. Critical updates will keep your system secure from the more current threats but the optional updates will also help close those annoying windows software loopholes as well.

Remember folks, in this day and age you can't be too paranoid if you run windows software. Linux users, don't be smug, I have several virus's on a secure drive designed to kill your OS as well, same with you Mac users.

NO OPERATING SYSTEM is completely safe. Some are just 'safer'.

Wait, wait, wait. Which site did you go to? pwidatabase or pwdatabase? Because pwidatabase leads to a dead end site, which is much more likely to drop a virus on you.

The 2 big mmorpgs (by Blizzard and SE), had a huge problem with this in the past, and on occurrence still happens from time to time.
One of the best ways (still not 100%) is to use Mozilla Firefox web browser, add the program "AdBlock" and "NoScript" (both are downloaded from the Mozilla site)

AdBlock will stop all pop-ups and advertisement banners

NoScript will stop any iframes on the site (like flash, java plug-ins) Have to manually set a site the permission in order to use it to the fullest. Like Youtube for me, all videos are blocked until I say it's ok.

3rd thing, make sure to have the lastes Adobe FlashPlayer, malicious coding was some iframes, and computers using the outdated version got hit with viruses, this wasn't localized to gaming sites, many other types of sites were hit.
You can also do the same thing with IE not to except 3rd party cookies.Btw It was an ad on Wiki that lead me to this game. This game get some revenue from ads on other sites and I have seen it on gaming sites that I go to.FFABP is not 100%bullitproof or my other pc wouldn't have gotten 2 big nasty trogans from.I still can't use it.

Here is a Tip for you,

Easy way for you to delete the Trojan and Play PWI is :

    1) Download a Program called AVG 8.0,it is a free scanner and virus protecter program, what this program does is if it finds a worm or a virus it will lock it in a vault until u download a differnt program to delete it ( if it cant delete it)

The Vault is secure so that it make sur computer run freely again

    2) Download Spybot, its a program that can delete spyware, trojans and virus's

    3) After it is done do a full computer scan and reset your firewall to insure everything is safe and no IMPORTANT data has been leaked to the hackers who made the worm/virus

    4) If possible and if you guys are really desperate, so a system restore, scan and wipe virus's and buy a new firewall

    ============================================

The database is still working properly, just that your computer must have alreayd have the worm in it and activated once it hit a Infected Site.....

    =============================================

P.S. Dont Argue with me with computer tech stuff, I am doing a major in it so no matter what your argument will be pointless and will be considered spam

why is a system restore plan #4?
my system which be better is.
Plan 0 (the before problems happens plan). Use external data storage to keep important files safe. such as hmm that 10 page long documentation on human physiological responses. b:avoid
    Plan 1. Avg/ZoneAlarm free Firewall/spybot S&D.
Plan 2. System restore right before you sleep. using customized restore CD which has all your drivers. Then you wake up presto everything be in working order. and it only took 10-15 minutes of your awake time to do it.

@MystiMonk IE be poorly designed from the start. Better to use something thats been decently designed from the start such as Firefox.

    I assume you mean http://www.pwdatabase.com/pwi/

I use Adblock Plus with Firefox so I never see any ads on that site.

Checking my system does not indicate any worms. Checked Windows Defender and Task Manager for unusual processes. Nothing. But yet there may be a problem. I did visit the database this morning. And something has gone wrong.

All working normally except the PW Client will not start. Gets to loading the character and crashes. Rebooted. Verified the client install. Verified Java. Still crashes. Not any problem at all until now.

Yep, thats the site. I accidently put an i in when I typed it the 1st time. I now have firefox and will see how great it is at stopping the ads from various sites. Thanks for all the replys and suggestions.
