Yes, I'm confused, It needs feeding every 5 minutes?

You probably received 200 pure waters too. Rightclick on those when you have your pet summoned or put them on a hotkey and press it when it gets hungry.
The pet-icon in the top left (under your name) tells you how hungry it is.
Green meaning it's a bit hungry, yellow more hungry etc.

You can buy more food at a Pet (Skill) Trainer.

You don't actually HAVE to feed your pets, but it is highly desirable.

Whilst it is summoned, every five minutes* your pet will decrease its loyalty by an amount which depends on the colour of its background. It will then change the colour of its background.

At the highest colour (green), it will lose no loyalty, at the next step it will lose one - and so on in increasingly large amounts.

Feeding a pet gains some loyalty, and increases the background colour by one step.

Your pet will also lose loyalty when it dies.

The reason this is desirable is that if your pet is >500 loyalty it will do 150% of its normal damage, and gain XP at 150% of the normal rate - whilst if its loyalty is low enough it will do less than 100% damage and gain XP more slowly.

Keep your pet fed! (Food, of which 'water' is the cheapest to buy, has a 1-minute lockout timer, so you can feed more often than you need to)

    * : If you have something equipped in the tome slot then this check is skipped. So you don't need to feed your pet unless it has lost loyalty due to dying. This can be important if you have the legendary pets which eat only rarer foods.

Edit: Yes, as said above - to feed your pet just right click the food item, or put it in your hotbar and left click it. Your currently summoned pet will eat that item.

When I played a veno, I bought sesame oil to max out the loyalty, and I had the water set to a hotkey so I could spam it when it was done cooling down.
