    Check to see that your video card or system isn't overheating.

    You aren't overclocking it, are you?

    You can get the latest nvidia driver for your system here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_190.62_whql.html

    You can also try getting the latest motherboard and BIOS updates from here: http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Search/Search_List.aspx?Keyword=EP45-UD3R&SearchType=Driver

    See if those help.
    Do you need help learning about patching the game, installing it, changing antivirus/firewall settings, changing network settings, learn how to use a computer, keeping your PC maintained and more?

    unfortunately, I tried using Everest to check temps, but there are no temp sensors in place on this rig. its not overclocked either, I haven't bothered to mess with that since I know nothing about overclocking. I'll check out the drivers and see how the program behaves. as far as the build itself - its a custom rig.

    in response to the person who asked about applications I'm running - when that happened it was just PWI and WMP (plus the normal windows background services minus a few unnecssary ones that I've disabled), but like I've said before - the problem has never been a problem before.

    Me and a whole whackeroo of ppl in my faction have been having this same problem since the last patch b:shocked i figured it was the patch and told them to not alt tab anymore but to minimize and "window" the game first before switching to another program, it doesnt crash or make the graphics go all wonky after doing that b:victoryb:cute

    i actually tried the "windowing it first" approach right before coming back to check on this thread - and it flat out crashed on me. I normally play in 1024x768 full screen mode with only the terrain turned up, no extras enabled - nothing too demanding at all really. draw distance is at a minimum even. If I do hit one of those days where it seems laggy for some reason, I turn the terrain down and it seems to help a bit in that regard. at any rate, I just took a recording of the system monitor while running the game in window mode 640x480, along with WMP and Opera 10 beta (and of course the recording app which I'll mention adds 10% strain on the CPU)

    will have to play fullscreen to see the text correctly

    I know Im going off topic here, but..
    My rig was built with putting ~$450 into a "barebones" build, then transferring over the drives and graphics card from my old machine.

    Something like that happened to me before but its cause i double clicked the icon to go back in and thats what messes it up.

    If you alt+F4 to minimize it goes straight to being a Quick Launch Icon, just click it ONE time and it should be fine.

    Check to see that your video card or system isn't overheating.

    now that I've updated my drivers, I've found the system monitor tool that displays GPU and CPU temps, I'm not overly positive what constitutes as "overheated" though seeing as how this is the first time I've ever had any monitoring tools such as this. The GPU seems to be at 165.2 (F) idle temp, but I'm not sure if this is a normal number or not.

    Looks like the textures are being corrupted. I very occasionally can get this if I really stress my GPU out, but I'm still in the process of tweaking the overclock on it, and its probably set a tad high.

    That said, perhaps your card is running into similar issues? Aside from upgrading the card, I'm having troubles coming up with ideas that might solve the issue for you. You can try underclocking the card very slightly to see if that helps any, but it doesn't really seem to be related to that since it only occurs on very specific circumstances (That is Alt-Tabbing). I've seen a lot of issues with the 8400GS, and the best recommendation I can give is to upgrade away from it. Of course, changing parts like that isn't always an option for everyone, but if you DO change the GPU, make sure you completely uninstall the Nvidia drivers and reinstall them when using the new card, the 8400GS seems to do funny stuff and causes any cards inserted after it to run at reduced performance. (Just one of the weird issues I've encountered with the 8400.)

    If you want an app to monitor your GPU, GPU-Z is a great app. It will show you your temps and more.

    EDIT: 165F (74C) at idle is a little bit high, but not completely unreasonable. You might try shutting your system down and vacuuming/blowing any dust out, or perhaps installing a case fan if there is inadequate ventilation.

    well.. as far as upgrading the card - its not in my budget currently though I do plan to upgrade to a PCI-Express card 9 series or greater. As for the temp at Idle I mentioned, it was after being on for a little while, though today after turning the machine on it was around 60ish Celsius before doing anything. I setup a test overclocking profile after running the "find optimal clock" wizard in the new performance console - which clocks the following (defualts first -> overclock second):

    GPU Memory Clock 333 MHz -> 520 MHz
    Shader Clock 1400 MHz -> 1496 MHz
    Core Clock 566 MHz -> 628 MHz

    and I've set rules in place such that:

    When game starts, begin "optimal" profile
    When game ends, begin "factory" profile
    When temperature reaches 90 C, begin "factory" profile and issue warning tone

    I noticed when I logged out just now, the rules did their jobs properly and I also noticed that the temp right before loading back the "factory" profile was only 81 Celsius. I've read on another forum that the running temperature of this card while playing Games can get to around 100 Celsius, so I'm sure that 81 is safe. and now after typing this thread (approx 15 minutes after leaving the game) the temp is back down to 73 Celsius.

    I will agree that getting another case fan or two would be a good idea though.
