Hi,
I am a level 71 veno with a lev. 60 sawfly(lev. 9). b:laugh
My sawfly has :-
Level : 60
Skills : bash 1 , toxic mist 1 b:chuckle
Now, What to do ?Will I give it some new skills and try to level it up? or catch a lev 73 fowl pet. I dnt think i can get a nix before lev 85 or so.
Which one will be (1) cost effective and (2) low time consuming as well as can (3) help me in fight ? b:victory
* I dnt have a Herc too. So I wanna buy a Herc first.b:cry

Save up for a herc and a nix. Doesn't really make much sense spending the 2m+ it would take to give a sawfly the right skills when you intend to buy a nix later.
Even with the right skills, the sawfly is still quite a bit worse than the nix since it has much lower health and damage.0 -

If you don't wanna get a herc nor nix now, my best suggestion is max out bash on your sawfly and try to tame (or if you can buy one do it) a kowlin. Aside from nix, their speed is good and they used to be the preferred pet for pvp before nix's came out. But as with any pet, max the aggro skills and damage skills given.
No it won't take 2+ mil to make it a pvp pet. My kowlin right now is good pvp material and I've only maxed bash on it. Sawfly's are the next best flying pet compared with the nix, if I recall. As a foxwing doesn't exactly measure up to the sawfly.
Each scroll it takes to level pet skills is ~200k. That's if you don't have to add it. So if your bash is level 1, you will need ~800k to max bash. You don't have to put rare pet scrolls on it as depending on the scroll that could be considered a waste.
This will also help things in pve (as in the mobs for quests and such) to be killed more easily with less aggro being pulled off your pet. Thus making grinding for your herc/nix a little more smoothly. Once you get your herc/nix they come with skills maxed already so no need to worry about that. The only thing you'll want to do is put an aggro keeper on there (bash, flesh ream, etc) and that will have to be leveled/maxed._Jaysun_'s Wife

Sawfly...
Starts with level 1 bash...
Level 2 bash 200k
Level 3 bash 400k
Level 4 bash 600k
Ripping Bite (why Nixes are so feared) Level 1 300k
Level 2 500k
Level 3 700k
Level 4 900k
Tough (needed so that sawfly can live long enough to do damage) 300k
Ok, so 1.8m if you don't level up tough, and are happy with level 4 skills.
Kowlin is one of the most camped rare spawns, costs more than 2m on its own, and is often killed for fun (you are also killed for fun while waiting for spawn on a PvP server). So not really an option even though it is also a good pulling pet. Maxing bash on a kowlin is also usually a bad idea since it then becomes less useful against bosses where you are not wanting to pull agro from a barb. Although this makes the pet slightly weaker in PvP, again, it's the ripping bite that is most feared since the DoT damage is handled differently. Level 1 bash and level 4 ripping bite on a kowlin also still pull enough aggro to keep you safe (using either debuff skill also adds to that agro). With sawfly, it's all about burst damage, kowlin however has other uses which can be negated by raising bash too high.0 -

You just proved my point that it takes ~800k to max bash on a sawfly, which will help to grind up for that nix and the added flesh ream. Keep in mind the OP's original question and that they stated they currently don't have a nix or herc yet. So in grinding (as your opinion was to get a herc/nix) for those, maxing bash on the sawfly is best and most economical at the moment given that it will help them kill quicker to save coins for that herc/nix and the aggro skills necessary. Also, I've never heard anyone putting tough on a sawfly. That in itself isn't really necessary as a herc nor a nix come with those and they aren't needed. Most of the time, the people in tw's or pvp go straight for the veno, not the pet. I've never had to use tough on any of my pets during a tw or pvp experience as I've been the target not anyone of my pets.
The Op's info is anon which doesn't tell us if they are on a pve or pvp server. So my advice is based on pve given that I'm on HT, not any pvp server. As for maxing bash on a kowlin and not pulling aggro, simple, turn off pet skills. Flesh ream pulls aggro too as does any other skill the kowlin has (if spammed like during boss fights). I find that my kowlin's bash is much stronger than its flesh ream of the same level. Its a user decision though. Maxing it isn't bad as the spike damage of an arcane user (compared with my damage as a light armor user) can easily pull off a pet. If you're worried about pulling aggro on a boss from a barb or bm (whatever the case may be), use a different pet or turn off pet skills. I've never known any tank to appreciate it when I have pet skills on so I never use pet skills around tanks anyways.
Also, if you're adding flesh ream to the sawfly, there's no need to level bash at all. That, like you have pointed out, is too costly. If it were me, I would choose bash or flesh ream and level only one of those skills to max, saving money for my herc/nix._Jaysun_'s Wife
