I do not know what system you use to filter inappropriate names, both on faction and character, but when I see ones like the screenshot sent in ticket that refers to a STD and highly inappropriate, one begins to wonder. THe same on some of the other screen shots we have gotten.

It bears mentioning if i were a parent seeing some of the names the filters have gotten past (example *nal_Lea*age.... do the math on the rest..)... I would be so ticked I would be pulling my kids off of here, and wondering what in the world are these people allowing in game.

Personally, I am a little surprised......

Case in point... character named Warts.... faction lead..

Faction Geni****

Need I go on with this?

CHar Slu*puppy..

need I go on? and the list gets longer by the day..

THe question is, being a curious soul who has seen his fair days of both concept design and dealing with things like this, is how yall could miss adding in something like this in the first place.

THis is the best game in 10 years. It will go down as being on of the best. But yall need to use your heads... otherwise as with so many games before, this prophecy has always held firm in all the sites ive seen and been a part of.

    Keep the game balanced
    simple to play by thee
    taking into account all bases
    Never forgetting this prophecy

    FOr those who forget
    making a game easy, unbalanced
    unhinged, They become
lost to the ages, time and space
never to recover, dust they become.

Well.. Can you imagine chat filters being too sensitive? It might block out ****isstance, assassian, or any other 'vulgar' section of a non vulgar word. And I certainly do not want a game with an overly strong filter. In every single conversation you will be guessing at what regular word the filter blocks.

The chat filters are overly sensitive. I was trying to suggest to a guildmate that they should just get themselves a nice Vespa scooter instead of a car, and it blocked all but the S in scooter.

Also, I am eternally amused that I can't write "sophomore", "chinchilla", or "grasshopper" without being censored.

    1.) bad suggestion
2.) going to try that when I play

Clearly you haven't looked into scooters. You can get a nice one for a fraction of the cost of a car, they get infinitely better gas mileage, and you pay less every year for insurance than most car owners pay in a single month. Best of all you can ride around with a guitar/shotgun/chainsaw. b:laugh

Can we stay on topic please? This is a serious issue that really needs to be taken care. I hate seeing my friends that get banned for less, and these people with names like the ones Lost spoke of, go around and don't get banned.b:angry

keep the friggin spam out of my topic. these mistakes are what gets a lot of games shut down.. I know seen my fair share of those too.... Ty...

As for language filters on name and factions, they are far easier than one might expect to add, given I concept designed them before, letting the coders do the rest.

This isnt a chat filter we speak of its in game names and factions, also something I have put a lot of time in dealing with..

the only issue is to make it 98% hacker proof...and given the codebase here, i think with the right gm's and all working on things, taking into account all languages, perhaps something could be worked out.

i can totally agree with the problem of filthy names and words getting through the filters. but i also see the problem of trying to tighten up and block more words. i have to go around the filter any time i mention my electric scooter (a type of wheelchair), which is kind of ridiculous. there is a problem on both sides of it...

I'm with Lost on this one - the chat/word filters do not seem to apply to character names - and there are apparently no filters at all on pet names. It presents a bad image of the game we play. . . .

Like Surtr said however, I think all we can do is screenie and report what we see, sadly.

Pet names i think need to apply too.. any named character or pet...

Hard_on, Bioch, slu* among others on pet names. They also need dealt with..

Another one on name... Bollocks.... it means BS in other languages.

Just report them to the GM's if you feel their name is offensive. The filters aren't perfect, and it would probably cost more to design filters that are perfect than the rest of the game. If they tried to design filters that would block any possible variations on offensive words then you'd never be able to say anything. For instance the last example given by the original poster would end up blocking slug, slum, slur, and slue. And then some things are only offensive in certain context. Wood or **** for example, both are perfectly acceptable words normally, but when placed in the proper context they become offensive. A perfect filter system would be able to not just filter the words, it would be able to determine what context they're being used in and then determine whether any action needs to be taken or not.

Worse, from what I've seen. Fortunately I haven't had the bad luck to have played it, so I can't say for sure, but I've heard stories.

Well gee sorry haven't played it in a year. All I remember is they don't allow you to use certain names.

In closed beta, character names were censored. It made for some fun.

Saw a character named Akuma, which came out as A***a because of the filter. That made it impossible to whisper them or add them to your friend list.

That reminds me of the space in names. Impossible to whisper em. Dont know if any still exist but, I know of someone who had a space in their name.

I don't think spaces are possible in your name, that's why there's an underscore in mine.

Again I say - the only solution is to screenie and report everyone you see with an offensive name.

I know the GMs are busy with other things, but I am sure they'd be happy to respond to reports of people bypassing the filter, or using offensive names.

Other threads on this forum have shown that even mildly inappropriate names that don't bypass the filter will get a perm-ban. So just screenie the bad ones and report!

The spaces didnt mean the person abused the system and somehow avoided the "no space rule". Long time ago, names were allowed to have spaces.

I meant currently possible, as in any character created since they made it impossible to create them with spaces in their names.

Not to anyone in particular. Would have quoted if I did. Im just saying that so the "newer" players dont go reporting players for the above reason.

I gather screenies for now and wait to be pissed enough to submit them b:victory
