shards

im a robe wearer, because throughout level 60-70 99% of the mobs you have to fight are mag, i was using all mag def shards.
But now I'm starting to see some more phys mobs, (80% mag i'd say) so with my new armour i decided to switch to phys def shards. As a robe wearer my phys def is pretty terrible.
But I'm not sure whether this was a good decision, should i use hp shards instead? stick with phys def shards, or return to mag def(just to be mega-mag-def-y)

Well, I would say that shards are generally to make up for what you're lacking. Magic shouldn't even be an issue, you have plenty of magic defense as it is. I personally stack HP shards, and physical defense ornaments. Then again I'm also a vitality build.
I can't say that I've ever seen a cleric stack magic defense shards for anything though...Float like a butterfly; hit like a truck! b:chuckle0 -
Sapphires (m.def) are a no no
HP increases survivability against both magic mobs and physical ones..
but p.def shards are often chosen over HP as they make up for a big lack in arcane armors..
It's often hard to chose which one of the 2 (p.def and HP) but I would say no to m.def (arcane armors have enough m.def)0 -
To the opener, your choice was so horrible... Get HP shads. HP is good against both magic and physical damage. From your avatar I see you're a cleric. The plume shell takes care of physical damage, arcane armor takes care of magic damage all you lack is HP. There's the obvious choice...[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

good answer =] ty0 -
try find gears with all resists, +hp/vit or +p.def and sockets, if gear have +p.def you can add hp shards, if have +vit/hp then can add p.def shards. use p.def belt and necklace. you can also find magic rings with +vit/hp really cheap. this way you can pump up your hp and p.def at same time and you won't see big difference what kinda monster hits you magic or physical
plume shell is pretty expensive and will eat your mp really fast, so i don't even bother using it when i grind, have to mediate to often0 -
well usually i dont use plume shell, but hey that doesnt mean that i cant.
it is admittedly a useful skill, and i should probably make better use of it.
the point is that by not using it against phys mobs =/ im CHOOSING to have a lower phys def, fair enough it wastes mp, but i have 7.5k of mp and a gold charm, so i dont think it's a huge problem.
hp shards are a good suggestion, because if i NEED to then i can use plume shell, and what's more hp helps with both phys mobs and mag mobs.
so yeah, i'm gunnu switch to hp shards ty =]0 -
Honestly, it depends a LOT on your defences vs. your level vs. your health.
I used to use pure pdef shards in my gear, which did allow me to take quite a beating despite having absolutely zero points in vitality (okay, 3 points, then... Still very low). Thanks to the help of my old guild, we calculated that I gained protection against approximately 80 damage per piece of armour, though we also found that I could gain roughly 90 health per piece of armour if I switched to HP-shards (keeping the armour, just re-sharding it).
However, if you drop all of your pdef shards, you may lose more damage-defence than you can gain with HP shards, seeing as HP is a fixed value, whereas pdef is calculated as percentages - and the lower values, the more it's affected. So, do some math before you throw yourself into a mad shopping-spree, and, if possible, find a character generator somewhere where you can try out various shard-versions.
That said, I will also join the chorus of "Mdef shards on a CLEIRC?!?" b:shocked0 -

I personally love citrine shards! b:dirty I'm a vit build and the extra hp and gear refines have brought my hp close to 2800 unbuffed (at level 65). I can take quite a beating from mobs (magical, physical, or a combination of both). Self-heals & plume shell ftw! b:victory
p.s. The reason why I'm so fixated on getting so much hp, is so I can do rebirth in the future. >.>0 -
Go with hp, or 3:1 ratio citrine:garnet I'd say. Went with the latter myself, using citrines in my armor for teh glowz and garnets in cape and hat. 3k def and 5k hp selfbuffed for comparison.b:dirty0
