They have level 5 skills on the buffs at least. Can't remember if pounce came as a level 3 or 5 on the herc, because I swapped it out for bash.

Yes, all their skills are already maxed giving you a major advantage at lower levels. If you check the pet skills guide I put up: http://pwi-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=334821 , you can also see that you can't upgrade pounce to lvl 2 until your pet is level 80.

    Herc starts with:
    Pounce
    Strong
    Protect
    Reflect

    Nix starts with:
    Claw
    Blessing
    Pounce

Replace Pounce with Bash as soon as you can afford it. I was glad I did.

If you are going to use the herc as a solo boss killer, keeping pounce may actualy be better. For regular grinding, you can get pets that will do far more damage, and tank well enough for the job.

Poor advice imho. Bash makes Herc more of a grinding pet (which it's still inferior at) than a boss tanking pet. Pounce is extremely rare - I've never even seen it as a scroll.

If you're going to be one of those people that uses their Herc for almost everything, then you could consider replacing it, but "as soon as you can afford" sounds reckless. I regret trashing mine over such advice.

Herc's have reflect which increases their aggro holding the harder and faster they're hit with melee (common on boss fights). When soloing anything you'd need a herc for, you probably won't have to worry about aggro holding either. With pounce, you could have a break from spam healing to take a shot yourself.

Pounce can also be used to interrupt channeling and gain aggro (save someone's butt -maybe yours).

These are the skills they start with, and what they do, as well as the skills people usually add.

    Hercules
Pounce - 2, Typically replaced by bash.
    Strong - 5, +150% PDef Buff
    Protect - 5, +150% MDef Buff
    Reflect - 5, 70% Melee Reflect Buff

    Phoenix
Pounce - 2, 80% chance of stun for 3 seconds. Successful stun raises attack rate by 25%
Blessing of the Pack - 5, Raises max HP by 30%
    Claw - 5, Raises PAtt by 30%

Flesh Ream is usually added as the fourth skill on the nix, because it's great for pvp.

I have to disagree with you because Pounce can't stun a boss so it can't give the hastened swing rate to further improve aggro. Additionally, aside from WB's which a herc isn't going to tank anyways, the big things you really want that herc to tank are all indoors, meaning you have to clear indoors to reach it. If your herc is inferior at that (really, with pounce it's flat out bad), it's going to make it more difficult to reach the boss. It's not like trash requires chain healing, and if you're pure (or mostly pure) arcane, it can be somewhat easy to outaggro your pet resulting in any additional aggro such as Bash over Pounce making a nice increase to your kill speed. Not to mention, the much faster reuse helps a ton when killing quickly.

to make any skill automatically work or not, you simply right click the skill on the petbar so that there's a yellow box around it (auto) or not (off) :)

and as far as the pounce or trash pounce debate going, here's my 2 cents :)...
i left pounce on my herc because its a rare skill and by the sounds of it QUITE hard to get and put back on if i want it back, so i left it on.
i do alot of pulling with my herc with just the pdef and mdef buffs on, reflect off, and pounce may only have a 80% chance to stun, but it works most of the time, and it catches those pesky ranged magic or phys mobs quite well. mob's stunned and cant cast the magic or shoot the arrow at me, and also within the 3 seconds of pounce's stun duration, i can usually get the herc rebuffed, from having stowed and resummoned the herc, before the end of that stun duration, herc's all ready to go for fighting that mob before its evn landed a hit.

and during bosses, usually it'll pop up RESIST when (i think) the stun would have worked, but ofc u cant stun a boss. and i've clicked my herc sometimes after RESIST came up, and he had the icon for quicken even though the boss wasnt actually stunned, so perhaps quicker attack rate even though the boss is stun resistant? (b/c the stun did land, but its impossible to stun a boss)

pretty much a matter of preference, i like havin that stun to catch things with, some like havin bash or roar or somethin else :)
i'm pro all classes, and against none in particular..
but the age old QQ about venos is just that. OLD.
QQ'd about a nix lately? check out this thread n tell me who's "OP" lol..

    i got a question.
Theres one info site where are posted lv90 various pets' stats

    the herc stats are
    attack 2672
    pdef 8952
    mdef 7161
    atk/s 0.8

    pheonix stats
    attack 4096
    pdef 8952
    mdef 10742
    atk/s 1

well so the question is, why everyone so excited about hercs, when pheonix has such high attack and attacks rates, also higher defences than herc?
if the info there is true, why not just make a pheonix learn a herc skills (pdef mdef), pheonix would be the ultimate tanker/killing machine then, wouldn't it?

atk/s 1 is almost double as fast as regular pets which have 0.6, and with a power of 4k nothing can compare with it.

i believe it is because of the skills that hercs start with, they give the herc the title of best tank in the game. you can get those skills on a phoenix (at the expense of a lot of money), but then again you cant use flying pets in dungeons.
