Just an FYI as this is something that happens almost frequently in many MMOs; don't use your game logins to register with faction websites/forums.

It's too easy for forum admins & mods to take that info and try to log into the game you're playing. They lose nothing by trying to "****," while you run the risk of losing everything.

...just a friendly FYI; hope someone finds it helpful : )

This was a huge problem on another game I used to play, so much that the developers actually put out a release saying this exact thing. People would actually start clans with forums with the specific purpose of attempting to steal the passwords of the mostly younger players.

PWI has a more mature player base though and (I think) most of us would know better.

Ideally, your in game name should be different from your login name, and registering on faction websites with your in game name should not be any kind of problem.

But you should probably use different passwords anyways.

you obviously have not seen nef/leg faction chat and the (i quote a member) 'cranial leakage' as he calls it. the player base is childish and degrades your IQ worse than spending a night on /b/

Not that I don't trust the GMs and admins on the forums here, but is there a way to log into this site and these forums without having to use your actual game username/password?

I mean, the actual login part in the game has that nifty little keyboard that allows you to enter your password at least without having to actually type it, so it rules out keyloggers, but there is NOTHING of the sort for the website. That kind of defeats the purpose, right?

You can always save your password to a browser, that way if you get a keylogger there will be no record of you ever typing the password. The only reason that's insecure is if you share your computer, might be your best bet

Really? It won't log the initial time that you typed in the password to save it? Oh wait. I think I understand. Keyloggers only log keys that are typed AFTER it is installed, correct?

That's right. What I personally do is run a full scan for viruses, spyware, and rootkits. Once that's all done I save up all my passwords in Firefox and call it a day. I know at one time people were hesitant about the security of a saved password, but I really don't feel like it's an issue if you're the only one using your computer.

Don't some keyloggers actually monitor the input stream for text input, and not necessarily the keyboard input, per say?

    They can? Bleh.

But then there are things like NoScript that you can download for Firefox and whatnot to take care of that problem(in that it blocks keyloggers from getting on your computer in the first place)... right ? ::wrinkles her nose:: NoScript. Argh.

yeah I have noscript running at all times. If you install it make sure you know what you're doing, can hinder the web browsing process and make pages look broken if you don't configure it right

That's probably why I didn't like it. I didn't play around very much with the configurations, and it was a pain to deal with while I visited my normal sites. Then I got a new computer, and I haven't installed NoScript on it... yet. Maybe it's time I give it another try.

Well, yes, but you never know when someone can sneak something bad onto a site that you trust. I mean, I have a livejournal, and I really trusted the site, but there was some news some time ago about people getting viruses because of an ad...

Well the danger of leaking out your password/username to guild forums is only present if you use the same username for your pwi account as your toon's name...which isn't advisable anyway. Most of the time guild forums have rules like using your toon's ign to register for easier identification of members.
