Ok buddy of mine is gonna hit 90 soon and is stuck between the choice of hp or physical def and wanted me to put it out and see why people favor one over the other and to see if their points are valid. He is leaning toward physical def but is worried his hp wont be enough for rebirth delta. I understand his choice of gear isnt the best so just pick whats better to you outta these two choices. Please post why you voted for that choice even if its "i like it cause its shines purple and fire is ugly". Ty for taking your time to read this.

HP Char

Physical Def Char

edit - feel free to keep posting but just wanted to put it out that after reading everything posted so far he went with physical def shard model over hp.

    HP Char

    Physical Def Char

First things first, purple is ****.

Its always best to mix up pdef shards and HP shards in robes. In rebirth you get Defence auras which will work on your pdef rating. A higher base pdef is always better, particularly in rebirth where you will often get hit by at least 10+ baddies most of the time and despite diminishing returns a really high pdef can still benefit you. But you'll still need HP as benefits from HP shards will eventually overtake pdef in terms of damage reduction vs HP gained. Example: say adding an extra pdef gem means 30 phys damage reduction an HP gem of the same level may give you 40 HP therefore far surpassing the pdef gem.

As a rule I'd probably go for 50/50 pdef/HP gems in robes.

If your friend is dead keen on rebirth LA will give an easier path as you'll be able to pack solely HP gems making it a lot easier.

I picked phys def 'cause Zeratul (pure mag) uses 'em. I've never been a wiz, so just passing on what I've observed. He's lvl 90 atm.

It is easily calculated. Survivability score (ss) = hp / (100 - damage reduce%). It's damage required to one-shot you.
Pdef shards model has ss of 11741, hp shards model has 11270. Pdef is slightly better BUT against magic ss is 13164 on pdef and 15709 on hp. Choice is obvious.

    +7 4 socket with g8?
Are you in Spectral or something?
Let's get real with gear here. +5-6 3 socket with g7 at most.
Also lol @ 2 behe rings and gold belt and neck...

I heard realistic options play a role in how you build your character.

Shard HP. It's a non-vit robe build that already has somewhat decent phy resist. The pdef build takes 9% less physical damage, but the HP build has much more than 9% extra HP. It will be more survivable, even if taking physical hits. HP shards are the way to go.

Pdef shards are for robe clerics and sometimes robe venos who put points into vit.

I'm gonna try and shard PDef up to the steep diminishing returns point. Then add HP, trying for as many immaculates as possible.

your shards should depend entirely on how high you plan to refine. if you can get 4.5~5k hp unbuffed with refines, then pdef(or a mixture of pdef+hp) should be what you want. anything before that, shard hp.

If it gets to the point where adding like 2/3 G7's is only adding 1-2% resistance I'm sharding full HP for the rest.

but this is TT 90 arcane -.-
TT 90 adds some nice pdef but not enough to shard complete HP

    jelous b:surrender

    i'd go for hp because
1 : diminishing returns strike hard at that point already
2 : if you ever plan to refine higher they strike even harder
3 : if you wear a charm every hp is worth even more
4 : magic can hurt too

i wish i had that equippment =P just choice of rings is weird, but that's another topic.

btw if the g8 gems are not for looks, maybe using g6 or g7 gems would be a better choice. instead of putting money into gems putting it into refine could have more effect. just a thought.
