cage quest, the small one, HELP!

hi all,, im probally doin something really stupid wrong,, i have the small cage,, not the super cage, the on that gives 1 pet slot. says to take it to the pet trainer, i take it to the pet skill trainer,, and nothing,, do i have to wait a certian time?? the quest don't seem to like me , any hints?

    typically, you have to complete the quest to expand the cage. so you may have to take the quest to expand, then turn that quest in to get another. then you may have a quest to actually expand the bag to do, having completed the quest to find the item needed to expand the bag.
    the banker and some other quests and quest rewards operate that way, in two parts.
