Is a faction necessary?

I've noticed a few friends of mine who just started playing (we're all around level 14-15 or so now) are getting quite a bit of invites to factions, and I got one myself last night.

What I am curious is - do you really have to join one to make it far in game? Is it possible that three people, given enough hard work and leveling would be able to complete most of the tasks in game (with maybe some random pickups to fill out an odd party here or there, or course), or is it virtually impossible to reach beyond, say... level forty without joining some sort of faction.

Not really, while party play is a crucial thing to acomplish many quests (and that becomes even more true as you gain levels) Faction is purely optional .... unless you want to get more deeply involved in the game Territory Wars as a for instance.

http://www.perfectworld.com/guide/feature/territory it frequently mentions guild, what it means is faction http://www.perfectworld.com/guide/feature/guild

aside from that is it a matter of choice
Perhaps the greatest secret to getting along with others lies in learning to respect their opinion(s) even while you disagree with them.

Factions are optional. But they do make the game funner, in which you can meet new people in said factions, or even go team up on quests with them or what not. For example, in closed beta, our faction went to fb29 5 times in a row helping out different people each time, because someone in the guild would find someone who needed help.

Excellent, thank you for the responses. Perhaps I will consider a faction on at a later time... I'm not really at all interested in the territory wars, but maybe I will feel differently in the future!

When you upgrade a faction to tier 2, can you promote more than 4 marshals? Or am I stuck with only the 4 positions currently available? I have searched everywhere I can think of for the answer to this question to no avail, so this is my last option.

Probably, if you have friends that will be online during the same playtime you are online ... Personally, I originally joined a Faction for chatting purposes and for those instances where you need more than one or two friends to take down certain mobs. I also enjoy the TW aspect of Perfect World.

The original guild I joined basically fell apart since the leader was never on much past the first two weeks Dreamweaver opened. Now, I'm in a guild where the people are nice and helpful.
