Thinking about playing PWI

Hi everyone,

I found this game while on Newgrounds and decided to check it out. I've played a few MMOs, mostly F2P and am currently really into Shaiya, but I'm always on the lookout for new ones to play. I've looked through a lot of the guides and FAQs, but I still have a few questions to ask before I download and start wasting more of my time on games instead of school.

1) I get bored real easy with grinding for levels, especially when almost everyone else is way higher than me and there isn't much to do at low levels. What's the exp rate like on PWI? I heard that 1-20 only takes a few hours, but that may have to be extended for me, cause I never level as quick as people on forums claim to.

2) Are there decent skills at low levels? I have yet to reach a considerably high level on any game (except Shaiya because they have difficulty modes) and I'd like to be able to do cool stuff without having to be level 80.

3) What class should I choose? I know you probably get this all the time, but I'm trying to solve what may be my biggest problem in MMOs: I make 20 different characters and try to play them all at the same time, which keeps any one character from gaing too many levels. I've had really good success playing melee damage dealers and healers in other games, with less success at distance classes with low hp. I also find myself soloing a lot (parties seem hard to come by all the time) so I'm really thinking about a Venomancer.

Anything else you guys think I should consider feel free to tell me. I also do great fan-fiction, if so inspired by my character (or others).

Thanks everyone!

    1. Each level is pretty balanced out that low levels aren't a breeze and high levels aren't crazy grindy. Basically, level curve is more like a power function instead of e^9999.

    2. There are basic skills at low levels that are essential to high levels. But basically they do lots of damage and look crappy. Higher levels have flashy skills to burn a lot of mana for like 1.5x more damage. There is also the "**** off system" That when your Chi bar reaches 100, you get a "Spark", in which you can unleash to pwn all noobs.

    3. Roll a Barbarian as a starting class. Because noobs like you die too much. And a Barbarian can act as a punching bag for higher levels.

P.S. I would love to flame your fan-fictions *wink*

I found this game on http://www.newgrounds.com too and I love it. I use a Blade master and I think it's a fun class to play.

Up until about level 40, you will level pretty fast. For some, fast means a few hours - others a few days, or a few weeks. It depends on how fast you want to go and your play style.

There is...grinding at higher levels, as much as people hate to admit it. You lose about 5% of your exp (with no cleric rez or Guardian Angels...with it, you lose less or none) for each time upon dying after level 10. However, once your quests run out at those higher levels (and they do), there's still plenty you can do. PWI has repeatable quests such as "Dragon Quests," "Justice Envoy," "One Man Army" (no exp reward, but good rep), as well as a "Crazy Stone" quest . Also at higher levels, you can gain good exp from helping lower levels run their "Call of Duty," which are challenging dungeons that you get approx. every 10 levels starting at 19.

Or you could just run up to mobs and kill until you level.

    2) Are there decent skills at low levels? I have yet to reach a considerably high level on any game (except Shaiya because they have difficulty modes) and I'd like to be able to do cool stuff without having to be level 80.

Many of the skills you get at lower levels you will most definitely use at higher levels, and they will gorw more powerful as you level them. Depending on your class and what you define as "cool stuff," you will usually find yourself doing the cool stuff as early as level 19, though no later than 29 or 39.

If you want to make 8 different characters, make 8 different characters. If nothing immediately calls out to you, make one of each class and play it to level 20...get a feel for it. PWI does things slightly different from other games (at least to me), so try and test your ground before deciding what you like best.

However, here's a simple rundown...mostly from personal experience, so do what you will with it:

Blademaster: Very versatile class. You have a choice in specializing in at least one weapon path (more than one path not suggested until much high levels): blade/sword, fist/claw, axe/hammer, and polearm. Each has their own pros and cons. BMs are usually your secondary tank, if not your main one. Mastery: Easy to Intermediate

Wizard: Typical mage class. Very squishy, with low phys def, but high elemental resistances. Best kept at range, and they have been known to act as last-resort healers, due to their one healing spell. Wizzies are your magic/elemental DPS nukers, due to high damage output. Mastery: Intermediate

Barbarian: Cuddly meatsheilds ^^. Never played one, since I personally don't like playing male characters, and that's the only color they come in. High survivability due to large amounts of HP and phys def (especially in tiger form), with skills to actually pull aggro off everyone else. This is the best tank class in game. Mastery: Easy to Intermediate

Venomancer: The only true solo class of the game. These chics are an entire party rolled into one, with a pet acting as the melee tank, and the veno playing both the part of the magic DPS and healer. Requires some skill as a player, due to techniques existing from the player's skill, not the characters. I suggest finding someone of higher level to teach you how to properly lure and multi-tank with your pet by the time you hit 40, since your primary party role will be a lurer. Mastery: Hard

Archer: The typical sniper and ranger all rolled into one. These guys are a pain in the **** to level anytime before level 25 or so, however, that's just me. Must stay at range, due to damage reduction in melee. This is the party's physical DPS, with high critical rates. Mastery: Intermediate to Hard

Cleric: Buffer, healer, attacker...meet your utility class. These guys can do almost anything. Their starting skill does a physical attack based of magic damage, which can easily put them in the realm of Archer and Wizard DPS. Self buffs are available almost from the beginning, eventually leading to full party buffs. All-party heals are available by level 40, and Resurrection is learned by level 20. Mastery: Hard

Anything else you guys think I should consider feel free to tell me.

PWI offfers both a Player vs. Environment (PvE) mode and a Player vs. Player (PvP) mode. PvP servers force you into PvP mode after level 30, whereas PvE servers give the choice to switch in and out of a 10 hour-PvP mode at will anytime after level 30.

Before you play, consider whether or not you wish to participate in PvE or PvP and make your server choice accordingly:

    Lost City: PvP
    Heaven's Tear: PvE
    Sanctuary: PvE
    Harshlands: PvP
    Dreamweaver: PvE

I wish you all luck, and hope that you enjoy the game ^^

Normally, I would elaborate on a question like this, but everyone seems to have covered everything quite well.

All I can offer is to address your third question.

You mention your success as a damage dealer and a healer. A blademaster would probably be great for you.

A cleric is a healer, and can also do pretty decent damage. Clerics are pretty good for soloing, and in parties. Trust me though, in this game, parties are anything but hard to come by, ESPECIALLY for clerics.

Archers are one of the best damage dealers in the game, and in those regards, I would highly recommend this character for you. However, you mention that you do poorly with distance classes with low hp, which is a very accurate description of an archer. =\

Venomancer would be great, as you said, because they are one of the best soloing classes (if not THE best).

So my recommendation for your class would be as follows:
    1.Venomancer
    2.Blademaster
    3.Cleric

Apart from all this, I would HIGHLY recommend you get into this game. It's one of the best I've seen, personally.

    Good luck and happy gaming!

Hey, thanks everyone for your help! After it took forever, I downloaded and installed PWI and got in a little play time before going to bed. I just wanna say... WOW! I don't even think City of Heroes had that advanced of a character customization system and that happens to be my favorite part of these types of games. I made a BM on Heavens Tears named Cirucci_T. She's hard to miss since her skin is purple and has light pink hair. I'm going to go ahead and make a few toons at first to see how I like them, then hopefully settle with one in order to reach some of the higher levels. Hopefully I'll see some of you guys around, and thanks again for the help!

P.S. Telling everyone that "I made a BM on Heavens Tears," sounds dirty. Just uh... try to keep it in contextb:shocked

hey another one from shaiya =]

i used to play shaiya before i started this game. i was a mage.

just want to point out, the archer in the game is so different from shaiya. you a lot harder from a lot earlier. and past lvl 30, you won't have much, if any repairs on your armor if you play your cards right.

unlike in shaiya, mage in pw is very hard to play imo and since you can't power lvl with a tank like in shaiya, while they are a lot squishy, i don't think it's a good class to start the game with

Well the rest of them pretty much cover everything but if you are looking for fun, you can actually come to the pvp servers. Well, I am not saying that the other servers are not fun but in the pvp servers, it have one function which is at lvl 30, you get forced into pvp mode. This enables others to attack you and you can attack others. It is annoying at the start but it gets better after. Well I know is boring when you grind, so there are ways to make your PWI experience much better.

    1) Get into an active faction( one that talks a lot )
    2) Make friends outside your faction( is hard cause not everyone will talk )

These are the fun things in low lvls. Which is to know more people and talk to them. For example, I have to grind at around 30-40% now and it gets boring but I find entertainment from talking to my guildies. PWI is a really fun game with customisation of characters. Also, they have high lvl features like TW.

You are worried about the grinding part but well anyone who plays PW know that it is easy to lvl from 1-40. 1-20 takes a few hours meaning in total. You can play for one year but effectively played only 9-10 hours and reach 20. So playing 9-10 hours gets you to 20. The reason for the quick lvling is due to the massive amount of quests they give you at lower levels. You just lvl when you finish all your quests and around 36-40 your grinding is also minimal so dont worry. Hope it helps and wish you have a good experience playing PWI!
