Magic Weapon Damage ???

I have a lvl 49 3* Raja spirit +1 with Magic Damage of 333 - 493 and bonuses of +35 Magic attack, +3 vitality, +118 evasion. When equipped I do 1485 - 1940 magic damage. I am now level 59 and I have a new Calamatus pestle tots does 333-499 magic attack with bonus of +60 magic attack. Technically is 25 to 31 points more magic damage. But when its equiped I do 1386 - 2028 damage. My top damage is 80 points higher but my botom damage is 99 points lower. My average damage with the Raja's spirit is 1712.5 and average with the clamatus is 1707.
My question is how does a weapon that does more damage actually do less?
Can't waite till lvl 60 when I get to use my arbor so that I can do even less if this math keeps going the way it is.

Your new weapon, Calamatus, only has 25 more minimum and 31 more maximum, magic attack than your old weapon, Raja.
If you look carefully at how your magic damage is calculated you would see that for skills like pyrogram etc the total damage is your base magic attack + a %of your weapon's magic attack + a magic damage bonus. So for example:
Pyrogram lvl 10 which you should have, gives base magic damage + 100% of weapon magic attack + 1379.6 bonus magic damage.
Now the final part of the equation will be the targets magic defense.
Now going back to your weapon dilemma this is simply a case of there being very little difference between the 2 weapons and due to the random nature of the weapon damage output per spell cast within the minimum and maximum range, the resultant damage would appear to be inconsistent with what you expect.
What you must realise is that until your weapon magic attack numbers become larger e.g. 1000 that the % of weapon damage actually contributes a small portion of the magic damage. If we look at lvl 10 pyrogram again you would realise the most of the damage comes from the 1379.6 bonus damage.
The Calamatus and Raja are basically even and as a result you get a 5.5 damage difference on average between the two weapons, unfortunately, in favor of the old Raja. I am confident that with further testing the results would evetually even out and then go in favor of the Calamatus but by a similar margin of a 5.5 or even less difference.
My advice to you would be this:
Go find/craft a 3* 2 socket Calamatus to make the comparison more effective.
Kinda like upgrading from a GT to a GT-R. It does go faster but you still get to work late anyway. Poor analogy mabey but you get the point.0 -
Thank you Onxy. I would buy the 3* calamatus and run the tests, but its not worth it when next level I am just going to use the Anchient Arbor. It was something that just caught my eye. I kept doing the basic math and it was not working for me. I appreciate your explanation, even if I don't understand the gt vs gt-r analogy, but then again, give me a tansporter that gets me to work instantly and I'll still be late.Dumb people are blissfully unaware of how dumb they really are. - Patrick Starfish0

Instead of recording the damage the weapon does, pop open your character sheet and look at your magic attack score. That'll make it easy (well, easier) to figure out which weapon is better.
Since magic attack lists a min and max, you have to average the two to compare different weapons (assuming they've programmed the game so the distribution is symmetric within the range).0 -
This thread is full of clowns. Here's your problem. The Raja's Pestle gives +35 to Magic Attack. The Calamitous Pestle gives +60 to Maximum Magic Attack. Feel free to log in and double check if you don't believe me, but I'm right.
Anyway, +60 to your maximum attack is only +30 to your average Magic Attack (because increasing your maximum attack doesn't boost your minimum), 5 less than before. Since both weps have the same minimum damage, and the new one has a maximum only 6 higher (i.e. an average only 3 points higher), you lose about 2 points from your average Magic Attack, which at your level appears to be worth about 5.5 points of average magic damage.
Moreover, that you're getting that average of +30 by adding +60 to your max means that your overall damage is much swingier, with a lower minimum (doesn't have the +35 mAtk boost) and a much higher maximum (has +60 mAtk).
Your old weapon is indeed (very slightly) better than the new one. Stick with it until you get the Arbor.0 -

You are correct. I did not even notice that it was +60 to Max Magic. Oh well, I am selling off the calamatus and at lvl 60 Ill sell off the Raja's in favor of the Arbor.Dumb people are blissfully unaware of how dumb they really are. - Patrick Starfish0 -
