I've been in several games, and it seems that every game has its own 'psychology' behind playing toons of the other gender.

For example, in Guild Wars it's perfectly normal for guys to play female toons. No one will ask strange questions. On some classes it's even almost expected to play the female toon (like, mesmers or paragons) because when you play their male ones you risk being called ****. Playing the other gender in Guild Wars: not a problem at all.

Quite on the contrary, in Second Life it's almost mandatory to play your own gender. There's 'crossdressers' too but usually they get asked pretty serious questions when they're being 'found out'. Playing the other gender in Second Life: a shameful experience when found out.

Here in Perfect World, you have Venos which are girl-only, and Barbies which are men-only. So, what can you do here? And for the other four classes, I have heard countless arguments why you could play the other gender. Some guys say they don't like to look at a men's behind for countless hours since they're not ****. Others say it's a roleplaying game, so they take the freedom to play a role.

Forgive me for focusing on guys in my explanation above, despite being a girl in real life. It's somewhat easier and more clear for me - I need to be able to identify myself with my toons, and I cannot identify with a male toon, so I only play female toons. And I've seen there's hardly a girl with a male toon so it might be just the same for other girls. Talk to me if you disagree - that seems an important point.

And maybe... maybe!... it misses the point to ask if it's "un-manly/un-womanly" to play the other gender. It needn't be un-manly at all for you guys. Maybe it's quite the contrary. I myself certainly won't question your manliness, when you look at a female toon for hours. Problems only start when you pretend to be an RL girl. That's not good; please be fair and honest. And trust me - a real girl will know if you're really male or female in RL. I certainly know in most cases. Call it our sixth sense ;)

I have a male Blademaster, and I identify with the toon. It just seems more natural that way. Certain genders seem to fit certain classes better.b:pleased

Eh, I'm a guy. I play a female veno/cleric. Because to me, certain classes just don't look good in certain genders lmao. b:chuckle Butuh, my gf plays mostly male chars, and my best friend plays [only] male chars. But probably because her boyfriend plays [only] female chars.... But yeah, another plus to playing a female character is that people tend to like, respect(?) you more, and like, treat you nicer. haha. but, that's just my opinion.b:victory

There's actually been some research on differences in writing style between men and women. Someone working on it made a web site for it.

    http://bookblog.net/gender/genie.php

In my EQ days, I took large amounts of text (like 20k-50k words) from about 15 of my EQ guildmates and ran it through. It got all of our genders right.

My wife's a 76 Veno, and we pretty much only play together. I guess that means I'm her lesbiman partner. b:laugh I think it might be odd for a guy playing a girl to marry a girl playing a guy but in PWI not that odd. b:shutup

I'm a guy and I play as a veno. I just picked a veno because I heard they were an easy class to start with.

I think that it's a bit annoying that I can't carry other people though, especially when I'm trying to help people find where they're supposed to go. It also bugs me that everyone assumes that I'm a girl so I've just stopped correcting them. I still tell them that I'm a guy if they ask though.

I do have a problem with guys who play a veno and say they're girls (it's worse that can't tell if they're lying or not). It's really weird that people keep trying to carry me though.

Awesome, I'm apparently a girl. Though I made my story only out of a bit over 100 words.

    Female Score: 234
    Male Score: 44

My ex and I used to play another game and he had a female character. He said if he had to stare at an a....at a rear all day, he wanted it to be a female. I suppose that makes him pretty normal. So, maybe it's just about looking at something attractive all day.

I also want to say that I agree with Brigit, it is easier for me to pick chars that I identify with. Which is why most of my chars have dark hair and what not. Icure people...rawr! Well for now....

I just liked the class. I probably would have went with a male toon if I had the option, but I did not.

I do not think there is anything wrong with males playing female characters or vice-versa. (Well, as long as no one does anything too creepy, anyway!)

    Why?
I fell in love with her. b:dirty I can't imagine someone creating sexier character than Gennya. I havent seen any girl more beautiful than Gennya. I think it's the perfect character to have out of the possible billion.

I'm a guy IRL but I been playin a veno and honestly I've been havin fun with it. I'll be honest when ppl ask me and I'll let someone know if I can at the beginning. I agree with the point of it being better to stare at a female over a male when playing a game that you'll be on awhile.
