I play with a Veno in my spare time and am trying to figure out if the Volcanic Mag is really any better than a Crystaline one. I have been using my Crystal since level 17...I am only 23, but, is there any benifit in changing to a Volcanic? I farm the grotto for the Volcanic eggs anyway....For some reason they seem to sell better.

Just wondering, TY!!

The crystaline is a little tiny bit better than volcanic in stats.

The Crystalline has better stats by literally 3-10 in each at level 90. The Volcanic comes with Tough, 1 rank lower in Bash, and will end up .1 m/s faster.

Really they're about the same, the Volcanic is a tad cheaper in the long run though.

You just asked the 100k question! Why is it the 100k question? Because that's the cost difference between buying the Tough skill from the Zoologist and buying a skill upgrade scroll.

    Tough skill: 300k

    Upgrade to Bash 2: 200k

    Stat difference? 3 HP, 2 Attack, 2 Accuracy, 10 P. Def, 6 M. Def, and 1 Evasion.

IMHO, the difference between the two is so small it's worth getting a Volcanic and saving 100k if you intend on getting Tough for the Crystalline Golem anyway.

Considering it's already level 23 might just not worry about it, but if you haven't gotten Tough for it yet, might be something to consider.

I have not gotten tough. So, maybe I will make the change. I kinda roll my Veno ghetto style and dont really spend any coin on her, she wears drops and quest items, and plan to keep it that way for as long as I can.

Thank you for the super quick responses!!b:victory

So is tough even worth it? What does tough do? Because I still haven't decided between Volcanic and Crystaline. And does that .1m/s really matter, because I know the stats do.

It is 15sec damage reduction 30%(at lvl1) to 50%(at lvl 5) with 60 sec cooldown.

Tough won't really make a difference 99.9% of the time. But 0.1% of the time it'll let you escape situations where you'd have to flee or die if you didn't have it. When your golem is low on hp and gets jumped by an extra mob, it'll buy you a little bit more time to target the add and get the golem attacking it so you can heal without getting hit yourself. And in borderline cases against bosses, Tough can give you an edge (I actually ran across this pretty frequently while farming FB39 since boss damage has large variability).

When you get your L59 upgrade to Summer Sprint, you will slowly but easily be able to outrun the golem. You will run at 6.4 m/s, the Crystalline at 6.0 m/s, the Volcanit at 6.1 m/s (I think - it might be 5.9 and 6.0). The difference between 6.1 and 6.0 should be pretty noticeable in this case - a you'll be able to travel 33% further before the golem falls "annoyingly" behind. Minor, but might be a factor for some.

The other stat differences between the two at level 90 is so small that you would need about 500 hours of combat to distinguish between the two statistically. i.e. If I showed you logs of 300 hours of hits taken by the Crystalline and Volcanic against the same mobs, you would not be able to tell which was which. That's how close they are.

I have a Crystalline, but personally I recommend the Volcanic now. Since the herc is now my long-term goal as a tanking pet, I'm reluctant to upgrade or add skills to my golem. Before the herc, it was a given that you'd be upgrading the golem's skills; so it didn't really matter that the Crystalline didn't come with Tough. But if you're not planning to spend money on the golem, I'd rather have the flexibility of an extra skill (Tough) than the extra damage of a higher level Bash (I already out-damage my golem by a pretty wide margin).

Be forewarned that the Volcanic is an elite mob. You're not going to be able to tame one yourself if you're level 18, unless you tame a Crystalline first and have it tank the Volcanic.

I disagree, Tough can be very effective, and allow you to take on challenging mobs you wouldn't normally be able to, and/or take them without spam healing them all the time. Plus it allows you to just send the Golem into a group of two mobs that will both aggro and start beating on the golem.

Most of the time, the two golems are actually the same speed. the volanic just get's it's speed increase 2 levels sooner, most of the time.

The ones outside the instance aggro in groups of 2-3. The two just inside the instance aggro together as well.

I classify that within the 0.1% of times. It's handy, and I suppose you could deliberately seek out situations where you can use it (instead of split pulling 2 mobs, just send the golem in to tank both).

Another way to put it is you won't need it 99.9% of the time, but when you run across that 0.1% you'll be thanking your lucky stars that you have it.

You can tame it yourself, you just need a bit of luck. I tamed mine at lvl18 by myself, but I could do that because that was the only Volcanic one near the cave and tamed him with the first try. My wolf died, I was left with ~50% hp, but I got my golem. So you can tame it at your own lvl, if you are lucky enough.

Tough makes difference, but mostly at the bosses. It is good against blowing up mobs too (fb39). I used to run fb39 mostly with venos and few clerics. At lower lvls in fb39 difference was that Volcanic with Tough stayed alive, while Crystalines died. Saved me a lot of pet food to get the loyalty back.

I'll do that then. Or should I just buy it...Hmm.......... I guess I'll try getting a Volcanic myself, but if it takes more than a couple times, I'll buy one.

Well, My Veno is a Lvl 22 or 23 and have no problems taming Volcanics. I do have a Crystal, which is way easier to get than the volcanics, with the volcanics, what I have noticed, is when you pick of the 4 that hang around at the grotto gate, you aggro them all, but if you run for your life, only one follows for any real distance. That is the one I tame every time.

    Just a though.

Lol I thought Tough was a kickass skill when I first started...till I looked at the cooldown time.
