Bow vs. Sword

Lets say I am attacking some random monster. My first shot misses it and the monster starts to physically attack me with no damage/very little done to it yet. What weapon would I use there?

What I do is: Use my Bow/Ranged weapon until the monster has 1/2-1/4 of its health, and then switch to my swords/melee weapon and finish it off.

The Question is: Is this a good strategy for facing lower-mid level Monsters when I am by my-self? And if so, what melee weapon is the best to use in this situation? (I use Dual Swords right now)

    Using swords may be effective at lower levels but dont get in the habit of it. Later on you get lots of skills that are effective in close range: Lightning, thunder shock, lightning blast, Winged Pledge, Winged shell, Wingspan. You can also simply use knockback to push the mob out of mellee.

    It's inevitable that, as a low leveled Archer without Knockback Arrow, enemies are going to occasionally reach you and get a few beatings in before they drop. When this happened to me, my tactic was to activate Winged Shell and then switch to a set of claws/fists instead of a sword. I think it has a faster attack rate than a sword.

    More attacks = more chance to critical = enemies drop faster...?

    Even with Knockback, they reach me so quick anyway. Unless I time knockback from when they're just about to attack, then follow it with frost arrow again, they just charge back at me within a second. Or I use knockback as third shot from Frost Arrow just before they're close to reaching me, but it isn't very efficient.

    I find it is pretty handy, but it is so overrated.

    I did this when my archer was low level. I actually used a fist as they have lower Str requirements. It works well for low levels where you aren't relying on skills much and the req difference between fists and bows is small, but at higher levels it looses effectiveness quickly.

    Use a sword till you get your winged skill.

    knockback is bugged sometimes for me. the mob would occasionally slide back then slide forward again at the same speed as it slid back. in other words, it doesnt run back towards you, it slides back and immediately gets in your face again.

    that happens to anyone else?

    Knockback and the frost arrow. Frost arrow slows them for a time so you can get a few extra shots in before they reach you. You can switch the order depending on the lvl of frost arrow, as you lvl it up the time slowed increases.

    Funny though.

    I'm a blademaster and I do same as you but the damage is inversed of course. I pull the mobs with my lower level bow and I hit it really hard with my BM weapons when he gets close to me.

    Use claws/fists, since they have more DPS and the STR requirement is lower than swords. Fists/Claws have more chances of doing minor stunning to the mob.

    However, when you get the proper archer skills as knockback, you can trow away any melee weapon you had, since your skills will be way better than that. LOL

    @Xnightshockx: its definitely a viable option for the lower lvls (just use something the same as or lower str req than the light armor)
    and having the melee weapon i made on my archer for my archer saved my butt once when i ran out of arrows and was fighting the elf in dreaming stronghold.
    also helps incase u havent watched ur MP so u dont have the means to do the close range skills that an archer gets somewhere in the 20's.

    but anywho.....

    quote isnt workin for some reason so here's a copy n paste

    Granrey - Sanctuary:
    "I'm a blademaster and I do same as you but the damage is inversed of course. I pull the mobs with my lower level bow and I hit it really hard with my BM weapons when he gets close to me.

    i do the same thing on my barbarian! lol (i sent him the lv14 quest reward bow from my archer)

    but on topic: for my archer, with 33 str at low lv20 something (which is an unusually high str for archer of that level because i spent str to fit heavy armr that dropped from mob, not knowing better. but anywho)

    i was wondering about the DPS of claws vs sword, and at the time my archer was carrying a 2 star refined sword i had made.

    using just the numbers of plain one star refined sword (19) and concealed claw (18) from the blacksmith, on paper the sword out DPS'd the claws on one end of the scale. but i didnt believe it, so i bought a plain jane refined sword and concealed claw from the blacksmith and equipped each..

    using the damage from the character screen (extra dmg from my str i'm guessing) the concealed claw did better than the refined sword on DPS and brought down mobs quicker.

    so then i got to crafting me a set of concealed claws and one turned out 2 star with a socket, and i put the highest physical atk gem in there and that's my archer's backup weapon now (incase i forget to make arrows lol) but my bow and using lightning strike or that one purple beam short range attack would always outdo the claws for finishing off a mob (unless out of arrows of course. lol) and his good skills arent even maxed for lvl [on a shortage of SP because of crafting lvls]
    i'm pro all classes, and against none in particular..
    but the age old QQ about venos is just that. OLD.
    QQ'd about a nix lately? check out this thread n tell me who's "OP" lol..

    Yea your attack is somewhat gimped for the first 8 Levels but once you get your Level 8 Quest Bow, There is absolutely no reason to continue using a melee weapon at all.

    Lvls 1 - 3 -> Can do away with the Lv 2 Npc Bow

    Lvs 4 - 8 -> Grab a decent Bow fom the NPC that you can use at your lvl

    Lv 8 - 14 -> Use Lv 8 Quest Bow till Lv 14

    Lv 14 - Lv 19 -> Use the Lv 14 Quest Bow

    Lv 19+ -> All your bow troubles are solved, you get the finest bow that would last till Lv 30s b:thanks

    So yeah, I do not see any levels that would even require a Melee weapon to be used unless you claim to be one of those wacky Blademaster / Archer Hybrids that run around fighting with Claws o.O;
