How do i know what type of card i have? Because whenever I enter PWI it shuts down right as i get into the game. So i wrote a thread and they suggested to upgrade your graphic card. But I don't want to get into that without knowing if my card is already compatible. I think the game is awesome, but i really need to get this bug out. Also when it shuts down i turn it on again and a screen comes up saying windows was unsuccessful turing of your computer and recomends that i use safe mode. Thx for your help

There may be a simpler way, but dxdiag will give you this as well as other useful info.DarthPanda16 wrote:To create a dxdiag log, go to Start, click on run, then type in dxdiag and press enter.0

Current Mode: 1280 x 800 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor
Driver Name: igdumdx32.dll,igd10umd32.dll
Driver Version: 7.15.0010.1508 (English)
DDI Version: 10
Driver Attributes: Final Retail
Driver Date/Size: 7/18/2008 03:33:12, 536576 bytes
There is definately a newer version of the driver available for download from Dell (support.euro.dell.com for UK customers). If you browse for the appropriate driver under the support section you should see a driver available for download. This was released on 02/10/2008 and is version 8.7.0 (you are looking for the chipset driver). Hope this resolves the problem.
As to the reason why the game fails to launch you can look into the event viewer for possible error messages (Control Panel > Administrative tools > Event Viewer) and see if anything is logged. Do post if you see any graphics related errors...0 -
srry to bother you again but what type of card am i looking for exactly? I'm no good with computers.... and also if i find a btr card will this prevent me from getting the computer crashes? Thx so much for helping me out.0
-
From the details you have provided I see you are on a laptop (Studio 1537). Unfortunately you can not replace the graphics card on the laptop so you are stuck with the existing one.
The card you are using is a Chipset card " Driver - Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family", basically a standard graphics card that is shipped with intel machines.
The first step would be to update the driver (as mentioned earlier you can download this from Dell's website - let me know if you need a hand with this). Once you have updated the driver see if you can launch the game. If you can not, post the results and we can then see what we can do.
quick question - Have you tried running other games on your machine, do you see the same problem or is it just PW
Hope this helps...0 -
yeah i have run other games... the same things happen, the games are fiesta and runes of magic, but i think the reason is it shuts down is bc they say its from an unknown publisher and shuts down for protection,0
-
yeah, do u mind lending me a hand on finding the right chipset? I went onto the website but i am pretty confused.0
-
To download the driver do the following (For now let's update the video driver and if needed we can update the Chipset drivers afterwards):
- Get hold of something called a service tag number (located underneath ur laptop and says something like Service Tag xx00x0x" x=letters, 0=numbers)
- Go to www.dell.com and in the top right corner click on Support
- The page that opens will have four options right in the middle. You need the Drivers & Downloads option. Click on it
- You will be presented with a window that gives you options like Service Tag, Find Model etc. Click on the service tag option and enter the tag you found on your Laptop. The tag is unique to your laptop so you will be taken straight to the drivers page with the model of your laptop listed at the top (Studio Laptop 1537)
Please note: If you can not locate your service tag number or have lost it (wear&tear ) on the screen that you are presented instead of choosing Service Tag option choose the Find Model option (I think that is what it's called) and choose Laptops -> Laptop Name (Studio) -> Model (1537) - Look for the option that says Video and click on it you will be shown the chipset drivers you can download. You need the driver that says Intel Driver - Applies to Mobile intel graphics.... Click on Download Now. The file will start downloading and will be called R203443.EXE, save it in a appropriate location.
Note: If you are using firefox to download the default location usually is C:\Users\<your login name>\Downloads
Also make sure no applications are running at the point. Close down all softwares. - Once the file is downloaded, double click it, run and and on the screen click the Continue button. You will be given a location where the files will be extracted (default is C:\Dell\Drivers\R203443\). Once extracted the installation of the new driver will automatically start. Just follow the on-screen instructions and you will be fine.
- Finally you will be prompted to restart the laptop. Once restarted startup the game see how it goes.
I hope this resolves the problem if not *rolls sleeves up* please let me know the exact error message(s) you get.
I know this is a lot of information apologies for putting you through the torture of reading b:sin0 - Get hold of something called a service tag number (located underneath ur laptop and says something like Service Tag xx00x0x" x=letters, 0=numbers)

k so i did everything you said and downloaded the new thing-a-majig and started the game, i though it worked but then like after ten minutes of playing it shut down then like always when i start it back up again a screen comes up saying that "windows did not shut down successfully this might be from lost of data, you can retain the data by choosing one of the safe modes" and gives you a few options, i have no idea what to do i just wanna play the game and i'm so close and yet so far is there anything else i can do? By the way thx so much for helping me, and the service is so quick, it so great!0

And I was hoping the problem would go away
The only thing I can think of at the moment is (avoiding the technical jargon) your laptop gets overloaded. When you start up your laptop or the game does your laptop noise increase. If your laptop is getting overloaded there might be processes running in the background using up too much memory and cpu. Can y ou lauch the task manager (right click on the task bar - bar at the bottom of the desktop which shows the data and time, and click on the Task Manager) and click on the performance tab. What do the CPU usage and Memory bar's look like? are they farily low around 10% or obove 50%. The higher they are the more processes you are running which could be the cause of your problem.
A quick google search does reveal quite a few problems with the 1537 model unfortunately. Should all our investigations fail is your laptop under warranty and what level of warranty did you purchase from dell. If you ring the dell technical support they usually do a remote session (i.e. access your laptop from their sites) and see what the problem is. The whole purpose of the exercise, from what I know, is to see if the problem can be easily fixed or does the machine needs to be replaced (depending on your warranty deal).
Let me know what the Cpu/Memory usage is like and we will try stopping some processes on the machine. Upgrade the chipset driver as well (follow the steps I mentioned earlier). If all fails poke the dell support guys :P0 -
I have 60 percent memory and i just wanna say in the properties of PWI is says its running using windows xp service pack 2 but i'm windows vista but tthey have no windows vista option... and i'll upgrade the chipset and c what happens0
-
And also should i have all security settings turned off? Bc i have everything turned off accept automatic updating0
-
k so i downloaded the chipset but it still seems to crash0
-
If updating the drivers isn't resolving the issue I would suggest contact Dell. Explain what the problem is and tell them you have already updated the drivers etc from Dell's website. If they suggest a replacement option (whether it is the whole laptop or just the main board) go for it.
Automatic updates is fine you can leave that turned on. The game works fine with Vista I have tried it on a at least 4 machines running vista, works without any issues.
Let me know how it goes and we will look into this a bit more ...0 -
While you are at it there are a few things we can try out:
One is for you to tweak your operating system to function even if it is not compatible with certain drivers. To do this all you need to do is:- Launch the Command Prompt in Administrative mode (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt -Right Click Command Prompt and choose "Run as Administrator"). Note: If you are to access any system properties through command prompt it HAS to be run under administrative mode.
- On the command prompt type the following: bcdedit -set testsigning on
This will ensure even if the drivers are not compatible Vista will continue running withouth crashing etc.
Second option is for me to analyze the information vista generates when it crashes:
Basically when ever your mashine crashes Vista saves a file called MEMORY.DMP at location %windir%\MEMORY.DMP (I am assuming for you this will be at location c:\windows\MEMORY.DMP), smaller versions of this file are stored in %windir%\Minidump (again assuming this will be at C:\Windows\Minidump for you). The original MEMORY.DMP is very large in size but the minidumps (which have the date stamp on them) are small enough to be transferred, and this is what I am interested in.
I can have a look at this file for you to see exactly what driver is (if it indeed is the driver) causing the problem. Unfortunately I dont see an attach option on the forums so you will have to paste the entire thing. Open the latest file from C:\WINDOWS\Minidump in a text editor such as Notepad (Double Click the file and in the new window choose "select a program from a list of installed programs". In the new window that opens choose Notepad - the clever guys at Microsoft put a tiny little + (plus) sign to hide most of the programs, click on that if needed).
Paste the entire thing here (the file is HUGE) so I can grab it and have a look.
I understand the whole experience is a bit frustrating but what we have discussed so far are the steps I would usually do to diagnose a problem. I do hope the dell guys have a better (and quicker) solution to your problem - the hardware might be faulty and a replacement might be necessary. I want to avoid getting your hands dirty with low level system stuff and if you do not feel comfortable with any of the above please ignore.
I wish I could be of more help on the matter and am more than happy to assist in any manner necessary to resolve the problem unfortunately I am no expert. People visiting the forums might also have ideas to the problem, it always helps if there fresh eyes looking into the same problem.0 - Launch the Command Prompt in Administrative mode (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt -Right Click Command Prompt and choose "Run as Administrator"). Note: If you are to access any system properties through command prompt it HAS to be run under administrative mode.

Thx u so much i tried the first method u have used so we'll c what happens. Also i think i might have found the reason why it shuts down... It is overheatting which i read on a fourm in dell. So i turned down the graphic as low as i could and it lasted like 30 minutes without crashing which is awesome! so i hope this solution works! i'll post after! U really helped me so much thx for getting me this far.0

k so i tried the first method but it crashed, so i'm going to try the 2nd one u did0

Graphic cards sometimes tend to generate tremendous amount of heat causing all sorts of problems. The fan(s) on your laptop in such cases cant cool the machine down quick enough.
You have already tried reducing the resolution etc on the machine. There are a few other things you can try.
First check to see which bits of the laptop are overheating. Touch the base of the laptop to feel this starting with the battery, also the keyboard.
Make sure the laptop is being used on a flat surface and not on a blanket, pillow etc (the vents should not be obstructed at any time). Is the fan clogged with dust and lint for example? You can get an idea just by looking at the fan. If the fan is clogged you might need to clean it (use a vac to suck the dust out) or open it up and clean it that way.
There are software's out there such as SpeedFan that monitor the temperatures of various components on computers you could give one of those a try. Elevating the computer to prevent heat buildups also helps and you could even go for a notebook cooler (aka chill pad) to help it cool down quicker (I always keep my laptop elevated and put a tiny little fan behind it to aid in air circulation around it b:chuckle).
I would strongly suggest you raise the issue with Dell if your laptop is under warranty so both parties can keep track of the issue. There is always a danger the heat being generated will damage the machine. If you have a record of the issue it is easier to get something our of the vendor at the end of the day.0
