how do I level mounts?

i just got a panther which somehow received 11/50 xp. how can I get more xp for it? I fed its loyalty to max.

    They say you gotta ride it to lvl your mount but...
    the way I did it, I maxed its loyalty to 999 and left it riding afk in a town for a good 8hrs+ while I went to work and it was 2/3 to the max lvl already when I came back. (loyalty went down literally to 0 )
