Refining
I dont know if someone else has written anything like this, I originally posted it on my guild forums, figured I'd share in case it's of use to anyone here :).

Equipment can be 'refined' at an Elder enhancing its natural properties. When refined, weapons will have increased damage, armor pieces will grant HP bonuses and ornaments will be granted increased defense (magic, physical, or evasion) which will match their own stat.

The basic material of refining is the Mirage Celestone, 2 are needed per weapon refine, 1 per armor refine. When an item is successfully refined, it will be illustrated in the items name -- its refining level will be displayed by a +1 (we consider items that have not been refined to have a refining level of 0). Each refine has a chance to fail, and higher refining levels have a progressively greater chance of failure. When a refine fails the item's refining level will be returned to 0.

Refining can be ensured success by using Dragon Orbs from the cash shop. Dragon Orbs have star ratings which indicate the highest level refine that can be acheived at their 100% success rate -- i.e. a 3star Dragon Orb grants 100% success for a single refine up to +3. The highest 'star' Dragon Orb purchasable from the Cash Shop is 5-star, but higher orbs can be combined at a Jewelcraftsman.

Erm not from me ;), ill add them in if someone can produce them. Not going to do too much work on expanding this as I believe it serves its purpose as it is.

What exactly is the benefit of refining?
I understand that it enhances the piece of equipment, but to what extend? For example, what extra damage would a, say, lvl 48 +1 weapon do compared to an unrefined one?

Not much point my guessing, if you want exact numbers, look up the item on PWdatabase, the information panel for each item lists its refining bonuses :).

The benifits can be explained by the wandering Duke in Arch.

Ive written down a couple rumors he gives on refining successfully.
I'm sure some are nothing but rumors.

"Restart the game before you refine your gear"
"Want to refine to +3 visit Officer in Windswept Grasslands"
"Want to refine to +4 visit Officer in Tradewind"
"Want to refine to +6 visit Officer in Dragon Wilderness"
"Want to refine to +7 visit Officer in Dreaming Clouds"
"If you fail an attempt, wait a minute then test with lower then lvl 5 until succesful then do your important gear"
"Best Time to refine your gear is 0400-0900 AM"

Im sure he says more but it gets awful boring after a while.

Ok, so I have looked at the refining bonuses, but they don't really impress me at all. You will have to get a refining lvl of at least 3-4 to make a significant change. I made a few calculations, and +4 gives an increase of a little less than 10%. Decreases with higher lvl equipment. I have not refined anything myself, but I heard it's not that easy refining gear to +4. Why go through all the trouble for such a low increase in stats?

I did some refining to My TT60 weapon...+1 twice so it's a +2. Granted, the refining level was nominal at best, but for the little extra punch they give, when in the wild killing mobs makes the difference between having & not having a chunk taken out of your charms.

For a refine of 0 to +1, the rate is about 90% so using a Dragon Orb is pretty much a moot point because if you fail, you lose nothing.

Lower lvl gear: don't even bother. You'll be wasting time & mirage stones because you'll be changing it often from quest rewards or drops.

    *edit*

Another thing that can be used in refining are Tienkang stones. Tienkang stones, according to Duke, greatly increase the refining rate. "A Tisha stone will slightly increase the refining rate but will also make sure the the equipments' refining level will never fall more than one point."

Here are the refining bonuses by level.

    Lv. 1/1x
    Lv. 2/2x
    Lv. 3/3.05x
    Lv. 4/4.3x
    Lv. 5/5.75x
    Lv. 6/7.55x
    Lv. 7/9.95x
    Lv. 8/13x
    Lv. 9/17.05x
    Lv. 10/22.03x
    Lv. 11/29x
    Lv. 12/37.5x
