Question about AH system

Sorry if I post in the wrong forum...but i do not know anywhere else appropriate for this.

Earlier I was bidding on an item...and there another person bidding on it also. To my knowledge...each time a person bid the timer increase (if the timer below 1 hr?..not sure about this). We kept going back and forth and I waited like the last minute to put my bid in and I saw the timer increased to 21 minutes. The other person also waited till last minute...but some how I the timer did not increase this time...and I lost because when I went back to AH to check..the item was gone already b:angryb:cry. So my question is...why did the timer increased when I bid but not for the other person?

Also..is there a trick to bid (like the really last minute/second) and the timer won't increase? Thank you to all who respond.

    In my experience, the amount of time that the timer will increase steadily decreases per bid. Probably to prevent a bidding-war from lasting weeks. It seems that it first increases the bidding time with 20 minutes, if the current bid time was below 20 minutes (can someone confirm this?). So the more bids, the less it increases until - yes - the last-second bid will indeed result in the item.

    thank you for the answer. We were bidding back and forth for like 3-4 times. I didn't know that the timer will decrease....I should've bid more at the last second.b:cry

    btw: If anyone got 2 stars Oranmented bow (lvl 42) and/or 2 stars Heretic Banishing Pataka (lvl 47)...could you sell it to me. I really need it for crafting lvl 4 quest. Tried to craft it...but already lost 600k and 5 golds buying mats and still not able to craft those.
