How do FB tabs work exactly

So I have been guided through a few FBs and have read on the forums about some of the things to watch out for from high levels.

But I need to understand the process (since I was essentially just following what others did) exactly so I am secure in knowing how things work.

I'll relay what the idea of how an FB works in my mind. Please enlighten me over any misconceptions.

When I enter an FB there is a statue. As the squad leader I talk to the statue to get the FB quest BUT do not use up any of my tabs at this point. The quest usually says to kill a boss in the FB.

When I get to the boss room there is a statue there as well. When the party kills the boss I talk to the statue and a tab gets used up in exchange for xp for the party.

If I forget to talk to the statue at the beginning I messed everything up and we have to do the instance over again.

If the party kills the boss I still have to click the statue at the end of the dungeon to use a tab up - otherwise I can just do the instance over again without loss of anything in the event of a problem with the party.

I hope I got the understanding of FBs right. With 2 statues saying the same thing it's hard sometimes to see the process.

The two statues do the same thing. You can safely ignore the first one and just wait until you get to the boss and talk to the second one to get the quest. This is called "tabbing". You can do it with the first one too, but it's usually reserved for the end just in case someone gets disconnected or whatever. Once you've talked to the pillar and the quest timer starts you don't need to do anything else.

    Nope.

The pillars at the start of the FB and at the boss do the same thing. They consume your tab and give all your party members the quest to kill the boss.
In fact you only need to speak to them once. At start or at boss doesn't really matter.

The Old swordsman NPC is located only at the start. Talking with him, you offer him wines and he clears the FB of most mobs for you.
When the going gets tough; Get a tank!

Ok so the statues are identical - got that now.

And I have to give the tab to the statue before the boss is killed eh?

The reason I am trying to make sure this is clarified is because in the general discussion talking about FBs, people say that it's etiquette for the high levels to leave squad after the boss is killed so the tab holder has first dibs on the items. It doesn't seem to be a requirement that the tab holder can ensure can they though, since the tab is used before the boss dies.
