it's free to play, and don't let any whiners tell you any different. b:chuckle
Some people say that you HAVE to spend money to enjoy this game, but it's far from true. It was originally a subscription game, which is why it's such a good quality game. You can spend as much as you want in the cash shop (yellow button below the map). Check it out and see what you think you want. Keep in mind that 1 gold = 1 USD, and I'm pretty sure that silver is a US penny equivalent. When you charge your zen on your account, it tries to make it look like you're getting a bunch of gold by adding three zeros, but keep in mind that it takes 1000 zen to equal 1 gold. It's a system trick to make people think that they're getting more for their money. Go figure. xD

Spending money on the cash shop can make some things easier, but it is far from necessary to spend even a single penny. Everything you can buy with real cash you could trade in-game coin to other players for.

That being said, it doesn't hurt to toss an Ultimate Game Card in your grocery basket every few trips. If you don't mind spending a little but don't want to get sucked into spending a lot, this is the way to go. It's way too easy to get in the habit of "just another $20" on your credit card.

    CORRECTION

100 ZEN = 1 Gold. If you are paying 1000 zen for 1 gold, ticket it cause you are getting royally screwed b:chuckle

I know a number of people that haven't spent a penny on the game, I felt bad not spending any... so I went ahead and spent $30 so I feel like I'm giving back to the game. Weekly updates and events etc... I wanted to support them. Anyway I just bought a mount, reset scroll, and expansion stone.

Mount has proven to be almost completely useless (except for races or going around town), reset scroll could have been prevented by reading forums before stating my character, and expansion stone was really useful. I could have easily bought that stone in game with in game coins... but I got it a little early.

Nothing there was needed by any means, and the farther you go in the game, the easier money making is. It's a totally free game unless you dont have the patience to wait for it a mid game :P
