for arcane / pure magic should i use 3 mag 1 dex 1 str or is it possible to use 4 mag and 1 str or do i need the one dex for gear

Pure magic/Arcane gear = minimum 6 magic/1 strength every 2 levels. The leftover points can go in magic or vitality. Vitality will sacrifice damage for survivability, and vice versa.

as long as u have a decent pet survivablity shouldn't be an issue if u play the class right

i think the extra point will go one mag ever other lvl and one vit every other lvl to a lil extra dmg and an extra lil heath too
