What is spirit used for?

I know that question is a dumb one to ask, but I really like this game and want to keep playing, I've already figured everything else about the game out except for that.

    Spirit points are used to learn new skills and upgrade the ones you've already learnt.
    When you go to your class's trainer, you will see skills available for you level and the coin and spirit required to learn it.
