Sockets?

What exactly are sockets..? When I try to use soulgems it sometimes (often) says no sockets availible. Im not sure what it is I should be looking for, how do I see that I got any?

  Sockets are listed next to your gear name, like "Mirage Sword (2 Sockets)". You can get them randomly on gear (though not NPC-bought stuff).

  Where do u go 2 put the sockets in? So 1 socket stone is 1 socket..?

  To add sockets, take the socket stones to the PW boutique agent.

  just craft your own gear, sometimes rare multi-socket items are created.
  I made an armor with 3 sockets afew times.
