I don't know if there is a thread like this somewhere, but I would like to hear everyones opinions on which is the better tanker, Magmite or cub? I am a lvl 48 veno and have a cub that I use for all my tanking. I don't want to get to like lvl 70+ and find out my cub can't handle tanking.

Tell me your opinions, tips, and advice.

    I'd recommend getting both.

Both are good at what they do, the bear is a good general purpose pet, it runs decently fast, it tanks decently, the damage is decent.

But there are just those cases where decent will not do and you need a good, solid tank. Now if you can afford a hercules I'd recommend that, if not, a magmite (crystalline or volcanic) is the route you'll want to take.

So far as I know, the golems have a high attack and pdef, but low mdef. Bears have a decently high pdef and mdef, but rather disappointing attack. In situations where you're fighting mobs that attack physical up close but magically from afar, if you have multiple mobs attacking your golem from a distance with their magical attack (as will happen at one point or another), the golem can get torn apart pretty quickly. On the other hand, a bear won't be able to tank multiple pure physical mobs as well as a golem, but is much better at taking down a physical/magical combo. A golem will hold aggro better, but a bear is less obtrusive and moves faster for better luring. It really all depends on your preference.

Personally, I only use my armored bear as a tank, as I've never had any interest in having a golem. I like his versatility, and the fact that an armored bear is just hardcore to begin with.

Not to mention golems are like belly butons and everyone has one. It is nice to be different I got to admit. And one other point, I'm quickly finding out, I can't stand the huge size of the golem I have (and maybe getting rid of) it is making targeting a chore at times, trying to do it thro this damn wall of graphics called a golem that insists on standing right on top of me.

It has me researching what pet I want instead that will do a decent job and now be so darn HUGE, to compliment my phoenix.

I do have a question now tho that comes to mind. Can a Herc pet be used in instances? I assume they can, because my Phoenix can not.

hold shift down and you can target things.

one thing not mentioned about the cub is the fact that it has utterly high hp meaning it can take a beating longer. now there are a few other contenders out there.

    http://ecatomb.net/petstat.php

here are some and what their stats will look like at lvl 90.

you can see how bad it is for the golem vs magic mobs. it does have 1600(est) less mdef than the bear. (btw the names are from the pw my-en servers) of and for the cheap. look at that penguin lvl 4 pet. it actually rivals the cub. but it does have less hp and lets not mention the amount of coin that will need to be spent on skills XD

oh and look at the cub and the armored bear. armored bear does have a slight dmg redcution advantage . However the hp is the same and the cub does more dmg . not only its p attack is higher. its attack speed is faster thus being able to hold aggro better than the armored bear.

As others have said, the golem and cub can both tank, but fill different purposes. The cub is an all-around tank, able to take both physical and magical damage like a champ. The golem is a high attack, high p.def pet. I have a cub, but I also keep the golem for those cases where I need to spam heal against a physical mob (usually bosses). If I'm spam healing, I'm not doing any damage, so I'm totally relying on the pet for damage. The golem easily beats the cub at that.

On a similar note, a hercules would replace the cub. So would a piggy if you're willing to use it against land mobs (and you're ok with the getting stuck bug). They are both defense-oriented pets just like the cub, and better at tanking than the cub. But nothing I have found or seen can match a golem at what it does (p.def and attack). Sad but true. So it remains in my pet bag even though I despise the thing.

Sadly for me i got used to my golem and love it to death. even at my lvl i do end up in areas with caster mobs and melee. but i learned how to deal with the enviorment and the mobs. Venos are the best pullers so i know how to use my pet. when i do engage a caster mob and it causes others to aggro i simply just stow my pet and quickly summon it back causing that caster mob to run to me and making it easy for me to control the situation. i look for the right angle to engage a caster mob, to make it flee to other melee mobs or away from other caster mobs. You actually get used to it especially if your a fox veno. Now i do see caster venos being capable of using the same strat. By makeing those runaway mobs to run away from other mobs.
Doing this alone completely negates the weakness of my golem. Now if its condenced of magic mobs, ill simply pop out a mdef pet for that situation and slap on my robe gear ( i melee so im close to it all.)

I use my Shaodu Cub for general questing and grinding, and my Golem for FB boss tanking. But I'll soon replace them both with the Herc, so we'll see the outcome. n.n

In the end the Crystalline will have slightly better stats, but the Volcanic comes with more skills, so it's less costly to train.

the difference in between the crystalline and volcanic is utterly minimal. like maybe 4 to 5 point difference on each stat meaning you will NOT see a noticable difference in between the 2. the volcanic does however, get a.1 increase in speed . also the volcanic does have 1 more skill you would love to have on your golem. but its bash is lvl 1 and the crystalline has lvl2.
You just cannot go wrong with either. and niether is better than the other

Golem: High Phys Def and High attack: great for tanking and keeping AGGRO

Shadou Cub:Has the same phys def count as its mag def count so overall good tank but it's aggro skills definitely have room for improvement.

frog: super high mag def, AWESOME for magic monster tanking.

Armor Bear: same as the shadou cub in many aspects but its growth chart get exponentially better than the cub after lvl90

Herc: average at 25 million coins: you get your money's worth, need i say more?

and yes the herc can enter instances.
b:bye you were all swell peoples

Thank you everyone for your input. b:pleased

The only issue I have with the magmite that frustrates me is he is always in my view and I have a hard time seeing around him. I love my cub, but keeping agro is definitely an issue.

    Thanks again.

To help with the bear keeping agro problem, let it do some damage to build agro before you start hitting it, or get bash.
