Pretty much anything that you could teach a magic attack that also has high attack power.

I can't recommend any because I been fortunate to have a Phoenix, but I've seen some people talk about a few monsters to use as decent pets.

Aren't the Undine's found down in the Elf 10ish area a decent choice? Or the Carapest Terrors found south of Broken Bridge Village area? I've seen both of these recommended by others. Not sure myself tho, as I haven't had a chance to use either. Prickly Oddfoot Pups also I been told are an interesting choice. But nothing I don't think can compare directly with the Phoenix I'm afraid, it's just awesome.

I was going to use the Oddfoot Pup as my magic tank, but I got a Carapast Terrror when I was lvl 19, and it's Mdef stats are better than the Oddfoot Pup.

So for my magic tank I have a Carapast Terror. I know a lot of people don't like the way it looks, but I think it's cute.

The only thing is the Carapast Terror doesn't have a very high attack. Just good defense, so you wouldn't want it as a damage dealer, which is also what you're looking for right?

Well I remember the virtuous undines in the Elf area from a quest I did with my elf alt. The NPC warned me about the serious magic damage it does, so make sure I had at least a charm equiped. Once I found the monster, I seen what he meant. For my little elf, he just about kicked my butt. It did serious damage to me, unlike anything else at that level I had run across.

I don't have the stats on those, but it might be worth looking into, I dunno. I've seen a few ppl running around with them as pets. Maybe one of them can post here and let us know how they are.

Petite sawfly is the biggest air damage dealer in the game.
Golem is that tank of the land also a big damage dealer.
Those are the choices for fly and land that venos go for.
If you can get any of those pets up to 70+ they are pretty much the best you can have aside from Hercules and Phoenix.
As for magic not really any great choices, the best pet for magic resistance in the entire game is a frog.
I used to do drugs, I still do but I used to too.

Actually, the Phoenix is. Second place goes to the Antelope. Oddfoot is third. And the frog comes in fourth.

I think she was referring to the common pets. The OP said the Phoenix was not an option right now, and was looking for other choices.

The oddfoot is ahead of the frog?

Actually second place as far as magic defense goes to the Carapest Terror.

I find the question a bit confusing so i will i try it diffrently.

If you ask for a magic TANK, people above have already suggested some good ones.

If you ask for an actual casting pet like its normaly common in games with pet classes i have to tell you there arent any, the best you can get are pet skills with an element attachet to it...still used in melee range, there are a few "archer" type pets tho.

I have a shadou cub and a frog, but how do i determine which to use best ?
If a mob has something below him like fire dmg, does that mean its best to use a magic defense pet like frog ?
Or is it mostly at bosses that it matters and not so much diffrence on normal mobs ?

o, and should i also increase other skills on the frog ? and which ones to start with ?
    thx b:thanks

Shadou Cubs tank magic just as well as the Tree Frog does because of it's increased health and bests the Tree Frog in physical tanking. It's an overall better all round pet than the frog as lots of monsters later in the game attack with a combination of magic and physical damage.b:victory

Just because the mob has an element ie: fire, doesn't mean it attacks with magic. If it comes up and hits you, it's physical. The fire means it strength fire defense, so you don't want to attack it with fire attacks.

If the mob is metal, you don't want to attack with metal attacks etc.

If the mob is metal, you don't want to attack with metal attacks etc.
If you hover your mouse over the "fire" or "metal" or whatever label on the mob, it'll pop up a list of vulnerabilities. You can use that to decide how best to attack a mob.

The frog tanks predominantly magic mobs better than the cub because it has higher m.def. So although it has lower hp, it takes less damage so you don't have to heal it as often. Unfortunately, most magic mobs switch to physical damage at melee range. The frog will take more damage when that happens because its p.def is lower than the cub's. So which is better is conditional, but overall I agree the cub has higher survivability (frog does more damage if you're interested in that).

Outdoors, I've actually found the pig tanks better than the cub. If only it didn't get stuck in the ground like all flying pets...
