Whats the difference between polearms/axes and which are better?

I understand that polearms have more AoE and have more accuracy than axes... but other than that, whats so special about them? Aren't axes just better overall?

    Polearm is the best 1v1. Axe is the best AoE. Polearm is still good at AoE, just not as good as Axe. Axe is still good at 1v1, just not as good as Pole.
