I'll be doing my evaluation on Tuskmoors which is feel is under-looked. I've only seen people using it as a transitional pet to the cookie-cutter magmites. Come on people, where's the variety in this game?
Tuskmoors: Poor man's shadou cub
Now, I've been referring the wolven guardian as the poor man's Shadou cub, but in reality Tuskmoor is probably more suited for the title. Consider all the price gauging that's going on for the shadou cub, it's perfect for those who doesn't need the cuteness of the pet that I deemed overrated for what it's worth.
At level 8, they come in 3 colours, green for the plainwalker tuskmoor, blue for the riverside tuskmoor and some other colour for the other one. Available respectively around each starting city. They all lose their default element when caught so it's really a matter of accessibilty and colour preference.
Comparisons with the Shadou cub:
I've done some calculates to obtain the data for the tuskmoor. The attack formula wasn't quite ready yet so I took a guess from the data I collected through various sources. The guess should be pretty accurate though.
Both at level 90
Plainwalker Tuskmoor:
HP: ~3000 (Slightly higher than the level 17 magmite)
Attack: ~2400 (Should be slightly higher than the antilope pup)
Attack speed: 0.6
Physical DEF: ~7100
Magical DEF: ~7100
Accuracy: ~1950
Avoid: ~1050
Speed: 7.7
Shadou Cub (Pulled from http://ecatomb.net/petstat.php)
HP: ~3150
Attack: ~1900
Attack speed: 0.8
Physical DEF: ~7600
Magical DEF: ~7600
Accuracy: ~1650
Avoid: ~1300
Speed: 7.4
Now if you look at the data, Shadou Cub clearly destroy the Tuskmoor in terms of defense. It IS the best all-round defensive pet in the game.
Movement speed. Tuskmoor is slightly faster but you shouldn't really notice the difference in everyday use.
Although the Tuskmoor hits harder than the shadou cub in for 500 points, it's important to note that it has the attack speed of 0.6 compared to the 0.8 of the cub. However, the damage of pet doesn't really affect the killing speed and the main purpose of having higher damage is maintaining an AGGRO. Raw damage is more important than having faster attack speed. Neither will be comparable to the magmite in raw damage. The tuskmoor however will hold aggro in cases where the shadou cub fails. It also comes with bash and an elemental attack, both useful for keeping the aggro up.
If you ever played with the Cub you'll realise how frustrating it is too get the cub to hold an aggro. In normal grinding it can be quite a nuisance. You don't really need defensive prowess of the cub in normal grinding. A magmite + puller (Kowlin or Eldergoth Marksman) is probably the only viable combo for higher level dungeons.
However, it's important to note that the Shadou Cub can be used as a magic tank. It is as good as the frog/carapest in that department.
Q: Why don't I just use a magmite for my grinding need instead of wasting a precious pet slot for a grinder pet?
Once you get further and further into the game you'll realise how much a pain in the **** magmite can be. It's a painfully slow walking wall. You'll want something that's good enough for your everyday need. A GOOD accompany that will get your enemy quick (good when competing for mobs with other people)
Also, since you have the chance to level several pets when you grind, why waste the opportunity of levelling a decent pet that is free and not amongst the cookie-cutters AND also come in different assorted colours?

Not only is the magmite slow, but it's not very good against anything with a decent magic attack. b:surrender.
The Tuskmoor would be a good replacement for the cub, except it's missing a stun. I just had to go back into FB51 because I realised I needed to kill 1 more Magus, so I pulled it to the spawn area, kept continuous heals on my shaodu cub and used the stun to give me time to stop healing and throw on ironwood scarab (so the cub's attacks would do more damage) b:victory
I guess if people do try this as a replacement, I'd recommend they also buy the boost skill, the one that lets the pet heal themselves. Right now mine only heals about 10% but it's saved my pet's life countless times, and it's a great help against anything more powerful than a normal out-of-dungeon mob (and sometimes even them).Mua - 8x WF - Conqueror0 -
I think you should calculate DPS rather than direct damage, since some pet has 0.6 or 0.8 attack rate.0

I've mentioned in the post that direct damage is much more effective at maintaining AN AGGRO. If you have to rely on your pet to deliver the kills then there's some serious problems with venomancer.0 -
I just love the tusmoors! Got the green one since very beginning, and by lvl 50 it is still my favorite. Balanced phys and mag def, good speed and very good at getting and keeping agro. Their damage is not much, but you do the killing yourself anyhow.
Plus they have the great sound effects0 -
very interesting article! i've been running a wolf pack, and pull out what i need for the mob im facing...though most often its my old standby, a frozen wolfmaster...or my snow bunny! that lil guy can really handle things, with health support!
but now i have to look into the pets you suggest. eveyrone runs a golem, and though i have tried * very* hard to get used to them, i just dont like them. they fill up the screen, they have a huge area around them where you can not click on things past them, and they are a pain in the pinfeathers to drive around...i feel like i am driving a tank with loose steering! so anything will be an improvement! i'll never abandon my wolfpack, but they need a 'Big Brother' who can kick serious butt in dungeons for them.b:heart

I am not in game right now, so I might be mis-stating some crucial detail, but I believe that you can find some south west of Lost City, by Broken Bow Village.0
