A *Real* Technical Problem

This is for all the knowledgeable computer guru's out there.

My PC (Windows XP Professional) will not show the logon screen. I boot it up and it shows the startup screens..but when the login screen is supposed to show, it does quite the opposite..and does not show. It's just a black screen with a mouse cursor.

A friend of mine stated it might be an issue with my graphics card and gave me a couple things to try but they did not work. If anybody could provide some useful information it would be MUCH appreciated. b:dirty

Can you first try a verify from the launcher please?

If that does not help could please you list the following fields from a DXDIAG:
System Tab - System Information box -
    Operating System :
    Processor :
    Memory :

Display Tab - device box -
    Name:
    Chip Type:
    Approx Total Memory:

Display Tab - driver box -
    Main Driver :
    Version :
    Date:

    To open a dxdiag :
In Vista, type dxdiag in the Start menu search bar
In other versions of Windows, type dxdiag in the Run command (Start > Run

I appreciate the response but this is an actual PC related problem, nothing with the game..i cannot even log into my computer, the login screen does not show up. I know this is for perfect world, but ive already searched the internet for a solution and I figured id try this because there has to be someone out there who can help :)

im on a labtop currently by the way, not to be confused with my PC problem.

Oh sorry blind me... If nothing works even after repeated restarting.. Well that will take a while. There are some options in vista though without it fully starting Windows itself. I think default is to press F8 when starting the computer. But you will hopefully see a blue screen after starting the computer which should tell you which it is. There are 3 options anyway. (I also have vista so hopefully it is similar) I would check the hardware itself first which can be done through one of the options you will get. Then a system restore is probably your best bet. In a really bad case a full system recovery is the last option that will bring your computer to factory condition.

Yea, although i have Windows XP Professional, the f8 thing is the same. Ive tried fiddling with that, trying to start in safe mode and such and still to no avail.

So yea, at this point i think the only solution is to reformat my computer which i really really do not want to so. I have 6 years of memories stored on that PC and it pains me to even think of having to delete it all.

For now I only hope a computer wiz comes along with an idea i have not yet tried.

Also, my system restore option is screwed up as well. I can go into it but it does not have any restore points set, which is extremely wierd and I do not know how that happened either.

Maybe gattsuru (Another moderator) has a better idea. He specialises in such things I do not know when he will come on again though. b:surrender

Alright thanks for trying to help anyway :)

Is there any way you would be able to contact him to inform him of my issue?
(when he gets online that is)

Just spoke to a GM and even he says gattsuru has weird times to check in so we aren't really sure. I will send him a pm about this anyway.

Ok, maybe it's my time to lend you a hand!

First of all, if your machine fails can't show you the Logon screen, it means that the OS itself has some kind of error. Either a system file is missing or corrupted, or you've got a virus.

Do you remember any strange behavior before your PC failed to start?

Oh great! Sounds like someone has come to rescue me.

Well all I can think of..

Well lately it was running slower than normal, even after i had cleared all known sources of spyware, adware and viruses. But nothing too traumatic..it always ran fine BUT shortly before the problem occured sometimes my PC wouldnt login..like it would freeze up after i typed in my password, but only sometimes..when i got it to work i left it on for a couple days and one day i was trying to close out of Perfect World and whatnot to shut down my computer and it froze. So i powered it down manually and later on i turned it on and thats when the problem happened. Havent been able to see my login screen since.

Alright. Well, from this point, I've 2 suggestions for you:

#1: If you keep your Windows XP CD with you, or someone is able to lend it, we can try to repair the system files from the Recovery console.

#2: If you don't have that CD at hand, but another PC with a decent internet speed, and only want to save your data, then I'd suggest you to search and download Hiren's Boot CD.

well, thats another thing. a few years ago my computer went on the fritz and my mother's friend fixed it up using his copy of windows. so my computer has always gone on and on about the genuine advantage thing. I dont know if myabe that has somethign to do with the issue but all the same..i do not have a copy of windows.

and what does option number 2 do? because i do not have another PC..just a labtop. But yes...i would really like to save all the files, although i do not know how im supposed to do that.

OH i just remembered another thing.

This didnt happen often but sometimes my computer would crash and when i booted it back up it would give me an error about a WLL Login Proxy thing.

I dont know what that means but perhaps you do?

Basically, option #2 follows this plan:

    1) You get a boot disk, so you can use the PC with a graphical interface.
    2) Make a new partition in your disk
    3) Backup all your data to this new one
    4) Format your old partition, and install XP
    5) Merge both partitions, and Ta-Da! A fresh install, with your old files.

However, for this option to work, you need to have enough disk space to hold the other partition, and, well... a installation CD, of course, to reinstall Windows.

EDIT: Sorry, I've just seen your other post. WLLLOGINPROXY.exe it's a system process, used for secure logins... in some cases, it slows down connection speed and there's an XP **** that involves deleting it to boost internet connection, but overall, it's not a bad signal.

Alright. If you don't own a Windows CD, or your Hard disk is almost full... don't worry!

After all, the main premise is to save your data, alright? Just follow these instructions:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/

And when you're done backing up files, you can format it and reinstall.

Sorry but option number 2 makes no sense at all, it does a little bit...but what the heck is a partition disc and all the jazz? haha

so i need one of those discs and a copy of windows? what? im confused now b:surrender

Oh, I supposed that solution would be a bit complicated... Sorry.

Anyways, there's a simple way to do it. You only need:
    - A decent internet connection
    - Blank CD's / DVD's / an USB memory.

Follow the instructions on this page, and you're done:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/

Basically, you download Ubuntu on your laptop. Burn it to a CD. Put the CD on your PC's tray, then turn it on. With that CD, you'll be able to use an OS. You'll be able to see your files, and burn them to CD's or a memory stick and after backing up, you can format your old PC or have someone format it.

It's easy, but just in case you get an issue, that page covers lots of cases where things might fo wrong.

I am doing that as we speak :)

But are you saying i will also need a Flash Drive? :(

-another thing...the site says i need to use the downloaded ISO file...what file would that be?

Not at all, that's optional. The flash drive is only used to save the files you want to keep, but you can burn them to a CD, or a DVD, even copy them to any USB drive.

The ISO file is the one you download from: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download after pressing the big green button.

the site says to use a recordable CD to burn...would i have to use a blank CD or would a DVD-R work?

Awesome :) well lucky me then, because all i have is DVD-R's (custom guitar hero purposes)

But I see that you play on the same realm as me. What is a character i can contact you on? If I have any issues id like to get in touch with you.

Im currently waiting for the ubuntu thing to download, but I should be back on Perfect World in an hour or so.

Well... my only character, at the moment is the one I'm in, Nevdemo. But lately, I've spent more time on the forums because my connection is faling at the worse moments.

However... please note one thing: The Ubuntu solution won't fix your login issue. I suggested it so you can backup your 6 years of data safely, and then format.

Another alternative would be to use the Safe Mode featureset. To access Safe Mode, you should tap the F8 key as your computer is booting. You will get a number of Safe Mode options; I'd suggest just plain Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking, depending on whether you already have a virus scanner installed.

That should get your computer further along the boot cycle, and usually into the actual login screen. I'd recommend logging in as Administrator, and then creating a separate new account.

Safe Mode has highly limited functionality, but it can be enough to run programs such as virus scanners or other important tools.

Has that even been the case for Safe Mode with Command Prompt? The latter option should provide some more detailed information, especially about driver-related issues.
