When you compare walk and fly, you have the keep the terrain in mind. Like flying over hills and gorges is obviously faster than running around them. So overall, I'd say yes.
But if you are looking for straight line speed, I havent really tested it.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

good ideal, im going to test running with my friend. just need to make sure he doesnt learn Master Flying skill yet.
thanks0 -
And remember, the Flight Mastery skill is applicable only for the White Wings. It does not increase the speed of the Lvl 30 Eagle wings or the Cash Shops wings.
Also, White Wings with Flight Mastery maxed gives the fastest flight speed in game.
Just FYI...^_^[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

wow, thanks for the tip.
i will do more research the flying things.

I think it's the same speed as walking. When you look at the item stats, it says +0m/s for speed, so it's going neither faster nor slower than walking.0

Maxed flight mastery is +2.
That's what Daedalus flies at regularly.
A fully upgraded one flies at +3, and accelerates for +5.
Therefore, no, flight mastery is not the fastest flight speed in game.
But if you don't consider the cash shop items, then what he said still applies.0 -
Also remember that you don't get to max speed instantly with your wings. It's quick, yeah, but it's not instant.
...this is only particulary useful if you gather a lot of herbs which are somewhat close together, and find that running to them is faster than flying. But yeah. :P[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
Yes, I'm still a stubborn holdout in favor of the old game. Haters gonna hate. ;]

So... which one is faster?
I know that flying is slow without the flight skill, much slower than running.
What about with 1.4 flying speed increase? does that goes faster than running? assuming both on a straight road.0 -
I believe that your base flying speed matches your base walking speed. (Edit: but apparently my belief was wrong. Apparently our base flying speed will be 5.0m/s)
However, you do not take any time when you start running.
Also, when you fly you feel slower unless you fly near the ground, because of how perspective and distance works.
So even if you fly faster than you run, in a short sprint you might lose if someone was running and you were flying. Also you would probably still feel slower even you fly faster, if you fly very high.0 -
Umm.. you know you didn't answer my question really...
I believe English is not your first language lol.
I wanted some facts, not just your opinion. But thanks anyway.
I can test it out when I am home.
Base flying speed is SLOWER than walking speed, just to let you know.
that level 1 wing is slow as hell without the flight mastery.
Archers run faster than all others... except the panda that turns into a tiger.0 -
MoonRider - Sanctuary wrote: »Base flying speed is SLOWER than walking speed, just to let you know.

Apparently not. I already tested this, but just to be certain, I created brand new archer and cleric characters and tested.
To test, I line myself up so that I'm in the southwest edge of Plume, looking at the Highwind Bridge, with Tailor Yi almost directly between me and the bridge. I give it a fair distance between me and Yi so that by the time I pass her, I'll have long ago accelerated to full wing speed.
I then walk or fly past Yi towards the bridge. Looking straight down for maximum accuracy, I start my stopwatch when I pass Yi, and I stop it when I hit the near edge of the bridge. (When flying, you can see your whole body, so you have to select a body part to use as the marker. The head is the obvious choice.)
Archer walking speed clocks in at about 29.6 seconds. Since archers move at 5.2 m/s, that makes the distance about 154 metres.
Cleric walking speed is about 32.1 seconds, which also comes out to about 154 metres.
Archer and cleric flying speed are both about 30.5 seconds. That makes it almost exactly 5.0 m/s, and that seems too round and convenient a figure to be a mere coincidence.
My cleric with level 4 flight mastery (+0.8 m/s) clocks in at 26.5 seconds while flying, which puts her near the 5.8 m/s you would expect.
I realise we're talking about differences of only a few seconds here, and that my reaction time on the stopwatch play a role. But at the very least, this ought to disprove the notion that level 1 wings are "slow as hell". They just feel that way because you're high up.
If we assume that base flying speed is exactly 5.0 m/s and that flight mastery does add exactly 0.2 m/s per level, then elf cleric base flight speed is faster than base walking speed, and elf archer flight speed is faster at level 2 flight mastery (and same speed at level 1).0 -
Base wings = +0.0 speed
That means flight speed = walking speed.
Flight Mastery improves the flight speed of base white wings.
Except for the acceleration to get up to speed, fact is, game mechanics, not oppinion, base wings = walking speed or faster (from flight mastery).0 -
Unless you have some evidence to back it up, your claim is just your own opinion as well.
The base wings may say "+0.0", but they don't say that it's relative to base walking speed. It can just as easily be relative to an arbitrary base flying speed.
As far as I can tell, that's exactly what's happening, since archers and clerics run at different speeds but seem to fly at the exact same speed. Run a test yourself if you don't believe me.0 -

It's not oppinion. It's game mechanics. You're using subjective "watching the game" to try and dispute in game facts. You've been provided with tested evidence from several posters as well as a referencing of the actual in game measurements and mechanics. Enough evidence to prove to an impartial person that the base wing flying speed doesnt add or subtract from walking speed. However your own bias wont let you see any evidence unless it agrees with your pre-determined conclusion. Scientific method is to let the evidence draw the conclusion, not to draw the conclusion and only accept evidence which matches it. When you do the latter, you end up in a war with Iraq.0 -
well, i dont know about with others, but my son and i have races a lot. he is a cleric with the wing upgrade, and my main is a veno. even when he is flying, i can keep even with him by jumping. of course, if i ride my panther, im miles ahead ^o^.hi.

And given the lack experimental evidence supporting your theory, and the experimental evidence supporting a constant base flying speed, I'd be inclined to go with the latter.0 -

No need to bring politics into this.
Also, Archers and Clerics fly at the same speed at level 1.
Even though Archers run faster.
And that is a fact.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]b:laugh

Wings ADD to your movement speed shown in your character menu.
For example, as a cleric my movement speed is 4.8m/s, that's my running speed. Using white wings with 0 flight mastery it's +0.00, so I fly at 4.8m/s, exact same as running speed. With maxed flight mastery, my wings are +2.00, so I fly 6.8m/s.
That's why a barb in tiger form on a +3.00 flying mount can actually fly faster than 10m/s mounts (7.7m/s + 3.00). And it's why a veno on a flying mount the same speed as a cleric can fly faster, because their movement buff increases their movement speed, and their flying mount adds to that number, so they fly faster.0 -

I said the wing are +0.0 to Base running speed. The topic is Elf not archer-specific. So the same as there is archer vs. cleric run speed difference, there's also flight mastery and cash shop flyers and a whole lot of other upgrades one can bring into the equation. But without bringing any of that in for flying or running speed upgrades, i was talking specifically about base speed, for running thats roughly 5.0 m/s, & the flyer is roughly 5.0+0.0=5.0 m/s. (Give or take from that for archer vs. cleric)0 -

so u're saying that with max flight masteries, the archer is faster than the cleric?0 -

That's just the thing. Although you can clearly see that clerics and archers run at different speeds, you can just as clearly see that they fly at the exact same speed, before flight mastery.
If you're going to smooth that away by saying they run at "roughly" 5.0 m/s and fly at "roughly" that as well, then you're throwing precision out the window and just saying that clerics and archers fly at "roughly" the same speed. I'm saying they're flying at exactly the same speed, and I'll continue saying that until I see evidence to the contrary.Darksylph - Heavens Tear wrote: »You're using subjective "watching the game" to try and dispute in game facts.
And you're trying to claim these "in game facts" without pointing to where they've been definitively posted -- which amounts to little more than hearsay.
The fact of the matter is, regardless of what the game (or the game's players) says should happen in theory, it's what happens in practice that really matters. It doesn't matter if that's by design or because of a bug. If I tell you that Ripping Bite does 25% damage in PvP, are you going to believe me just because that's what the game says should happen? However your own bias wont let you see any evidence unless it agrees with your pre-determined conclusion.
Actually, if I had let a "pre-determined conclusion" define my final answer, I would be agreeing with your original statement that base flying speed = running speed.
When I did my first flight tests, I just wanted to know if my flying was faster or slower than walking, and this was after I already had several levels of flight mastery. Hence, I wasn't particularly precise, and I came away with the notion that base flying speed was roughly equal to running speed (and that flying was now faster due to flight mastery).
When I did this latest round of level 1 flight testing, I was actually surprised to find that the archer and cleric were flying at the same speed, yet clearly running at different speeds. Hence, I had to draw a new conclusion -- that elven wing flying speed is apparently not related to running speed.0 -

I agree with plenair; do you say it's "game mechanics" just because you see a +0.0m/s? For all you know this might mean something else...You said there are posters providing "tested evidence"; where are all these posters?? I don't see them.
At least plenair did some kind of testing/experimenting, and while it may not be accurate, he does have some evidence to back up his argument.
BTW, plenair: how many times did you try your experiment? Would it produce the same results had you tried many times?0 -

can't speak for barbs but no veno speed buff only works while we are actually running if we use it while we are flying our speed does not increase
I can run much faster than i can fly0 -
DEVlL_JIN - Lost City wrote: »BTW, plenair: how many times did you try your experiment? Would it produce the same results had you tried many times?
I did at least two or three times flying with each class, all getting the same result -- very tightly grouped, such that I didn't see the need to do averages or anything.
You can travel a fair distance in a second, so when I see numbers that are at least a second apart, it's not too likely that it's just reaction time error.
I admit I didn't have the patience to do a good dozen runs each (flying/walking, archer/cleric) like I might have liked to do. I also would've preferred to have a longer test distance to increase the accuracy, but it's hard to find a flat piece of land around Plume, with visible start/stop landmarks, and no obstructions to either flying or walking.
It would probably be easier if I were to get the test characters into Archosaur, but I'd have to sneak them past all the various aggressive stuff inbetween. The cleric has infinite flight due to MP regen, but not the archer. Still, I may try that -- Archosaur is perfect for testing due to long straight flat paths and clearly visible boundaries to use as landmarks.0 -
I am a newbie and only at level 4 and am trying the quest to fly to the highest tree in City of Plume but can't figure out how to fly high. What am I missing?0

You can either look up and push up on the keyboard or you can hit the space bar (or the fastest way to go up is to do both at the same time).0 -
The base flying speed is the same for all classes. IT is set at 5.0 m/s
All the + speed on flying Aerogears are applied to the 5.0 m/s
Natural wings with maxed out Mastery would give elves a +7 m/s flying speed, although without acceleration.
The maximun speed is 8.0m/s (+10 m/s with acceleration) for all races.
The only speed buff that affects flying speed is the white genie's startup skill, no other buffs affect flying speed.
So, in the case of a cleric, its walking speed is 4.9 m/s while their flying speed (without mastery) is 5.0.Too often we loose sight of life's simple pleasures. I personally want the Hallucinatory Mist for my Elf. The Two Headed Wyrm for my Veno and Astral Melody or Urim's Light for my Human.
Edit: hahahaha oops wrong post. Now to contribute somethign to the post below
But ya when I had my white wings I never saw a difference in flight and walk speed, but I still chose to fly thinking that it was faster.0 -

erethizon1, Thank you for helping me figure out how to fly. Now I found the Chest of Trial but how do I open it? When I try to open it something like an ax appears, so I'm like chopping it. I even stood nearby hoping to watch someone else open it, but they all just scratch the ground, but no one has opened that I can see.0
