Difference between pking on pvp server and pve server.

I'm rather confused about pvping/pking. From what I understand, when you attack someone, you turn purple or pinkish? and when you pk someone you turn red. This applies to pve servers, but also to the pvp servers? Cause I saw several reds today on lost city. So now I'm just confused about the difference since the pking penalties still apply :s

    when you attack someone you turn pink. if you do it too many times you turn red. during this time guards will kill you on sight

    theres a counter next to your minimap to tell you how many hours you have left until your name is changed back to white (2 hours per kill)

    applies to both servers, but in pve server you can turn off pk and no one can kill you. in pvp server you're free to kill and be killed anywhere outside of towns.

    Do you lose exp upon being pked? So you turn red when you flag too much? :s
