Streetsmarts & Info for noobs to protect themselves

I have looked through a few stickies and posts, but not seen what I was looking for.
I was looking for a list of things to watch out for when starting in PWI. After the initial starting phase, when we've got a handle on some of the controls and how the game plays, I have a bunch of unknowns and irrational fears about trying some of the features. And since the human race is involved in this game, there will be shady types trying to scam the naive.
If there is a list of things to beware of and stuff that lets us know the consequences of things (like duels, dying, trading, permanent descisions, times to be suspicious...), can someone post the link or maybe start creating a list in this thread?
P.S. I saw the thread about banning exploits, it's not really what I'm asking about.

Yes. When you reach 19 and get your fb (call of duty) 19 quest. You'll need a squad of higher level to help you. Sometimes (not all) those high level is only interested in getting the experience/reputation from helping you kill the final boss. But not to actually help you complete the quest by getting a certain number of mob kills. If your squad does not help you to get the required number of normal mob kills and are attacking the final boss (so they can get the experience). Leave the squad and make all of them fail the quest. You'll get the tab back and then you can get a better squad and try again.
PS. Yes its part rant, cause i am getting tired of helping unexpecting newbies rerun their fb19 after they been "rob" of their tabs.0 -
hey, good one. hadnt thought of that0

It's also quite possible to run the FB19 series with a bunch of other players from the 19-22 level range. Doing so may net you fewer items, but it's also a lot better training for latter FBs than simply blowing through a dungeon with a team of folk that could individually solo it.
Duels will not kill you, but they will leave you rather low on health if you lose. Do be wary of dueling when PVP-enabled, for obvious reasons.
After level 10, dying results in a small loss of experience, and a risk that an item will drop from your inventory. The experience loss starts at 5%, but decreases as you increase in levels. If you don't PVP, the chance of dropping an item is 1%, so it's not an overwhelming risk, but it's not a good idea to carry around giant stacks of Celestones on you.
Permanent decisions... what class and race you start with, of course. Spiritual Points can not be 'bought back' from a skill once they are spent, although they can always be earned again. Character points require a Reset Note to 'buy back', which can be bought from other players or the cash shop. At level 89 or so, there's also a choice between Demon and Sage skill paths, the former being damage focused while the later is more survivability focused, and I do not believe that can be redone easily.
General tips :- Use the banks. You do have a chance to drop items in your inventory that are not equipped even as a PvE-only player. Most of the items you need to carry on your regularly won't be expensive enough to be an issue, but, again, carrying a giant stack of very costly items can be costly.
- Do not hand out account information, here or in the game. That includes your username. The only exceptions would be the ticketing system, PMs, or whispers to GMs. Telling someone else your username halves the difficulty of breaking your account's security.
- Don't grind questlessly, especially early in the game. It's slower, you might miss your Spiritual Cultivation quests, and you'll have problems getting Reputation.
- Use catshops, the Auctioneer system, or trade windows to buy items from other players. Anything complicated focusing on the mail system or oddly low-level alts -- especially anything that seems too good to be true -- should set off warning bells.
- Do not use untrusted computers to log into Perfect World or the Perfect World forums. Keyloggers are rather frighteningly common these days. Maintain decent security on your own computer and network.

good stuff, guys!
Thanks for your additions. I might try dueling since I'm on a PVE server.
I have more questions if anyone is up to them.
-If you die and lose a celestone fragment, does the entire stack get lost or just 1?
-Are there any items that you'll only find 1 of in the game, or can everything be found again if we lose it?
-Is there a chance of failure in Manufacturing?
-PK Mode, I searched and saw that it means Player Killer. Is it like opting-in to any other PK wanting to PVP in a PVE world? Something I wouldn't want to accidentally do.
-Are squads things you get into for that day only or are you stuck with squad-mates for a while?
-I hear "farming" is bad.. If I wait around for mines to respawn, will that get me in trouble?
Another permanent I found is that you can't change your character look 2 days after you created him/her.0 -
When you die & drop things in pk you lose an entire slot in your inventory or equip that means w/e that is in that slot. So yes ur entire stack goes away.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

It's up to 20. Ie. you have a stack of 4000 arrows, only 20 will drop from that stack, not all 40000 -

Other than that, pretty much everything else can be bought from players (even cash shop items).-PK Mode, I searched and saw that it means Player Killer. Nothing wrong with farming for personal game, as long as you aren't loot ninjaing (i.e. stealing loot from under the nose of another player).Another permanent I found is that you can't change your character look 2 days after you created him/her.0 -

This is a point that can be debated. There is a timer in place to prevent others from taking items dropped by a monster you killed but many try to kill as fast as they can. The field is often covered with items(mostly gold) that people just leave. The question then becomes where do we draw the line between stealing and picking up what is undesired and will be lost anyway?0 -

It's very simple: Is the owner standing over it? No? Then it's free game. Is someone standing over it, but not picking it up? Odds are they're not the original owner and are waiting for the timer to expire.0 -
Yeah, I should have put etiquette in as one of the types of streetsmarts.
If I see someone attacking in an area with loot around them, i assume it's theirs and stay away until they leave the area.
I love all of these tips by the way. I wish I had people like you when I started every game.0 -

"Gold Farmers" is an MMORPG term to describe individuals or groups of individuals who receive large quantities of coins in-game and then try to sell to players for real world currency, outside of those methods recognized by Perfect World Entertainment. Since gold farmers both violate the terms of service and make normal player's lives miserable (typically by spamming normal players or ), gold farming is very bad, in a banhammer sort of way.Another permanent I found is that you can't change your character look 2 days after you created him/her.
In the 28+ game, there's a quest to earn a free Makeover Scroll that can customize your character's appearance, with the limits of your character's race. Other Makeover scrolls can be bought from other players, or through the Item Mall.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -
If a higher level player helps you to do an FB(dungeon), is it most likely that s/he will make the killing blow and get all of the items for him/herself? Well I guess s/he did do most of the work, but still everyone should get some stuff.
Does the experience get split if 2 people defeat a monster together?
If a squad does a quest together, does the quest get completed in everyone's Quest List?
I have more to add:
-Shop around when buying stuff from those Cat stores. For example the ones around the bank have things for the Bank Quest but they're twice as expensive as the stores at the teleporter.
-The Flight Mastery skill only speeds up flying with the wings you start with. So some would consider it a waste of skill points to put into it because other wings are available at level 30+ with their own speed boosts.0 -
Don't buy Hay for more than 5k, it's a common price (I think); If you're really lucky some people in Archosaur sell it for 3.XXX or even 1.XXX coins (but often they have only a few pieces) and you already get there around lvl 20.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

On the other hand, you do lose out on the experience of dealing with an FB at a comparable level, and many higher level characters will prefer to use Wine, which makes it hard to complete one of the quests.Does the experience get split if 2 people defeat a monster together? If a squad does a quest together, does the quest get completed in everyone's Quest List?[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -
I really suggest to you see more cat shops before buy anything (like materials some shops near the vendor sells 3-4x higher price, than the middle price ~ like cotton thread for 5-6K, but the normal price is 2-2,5K). And allways check the auction house, before buying. You can get the items in better price, if you bid them, and need some patience for this (if the items have high demand, you can get allways in better price in another catshop or auction, and its depends only your luck or patience).0
-
People are greedy and impatient. You can regularly do over 100k simply by buying stuff at a cat then selling it to another cat just 10 meters away.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0

Best thing you can do is find some friendly guild to help you with your mob kiling part of fb or as mod said do id with ppl on same lvl.
Fb19 is not realy issue as it can be done in short time, but worst one is probably fb39 whitch can take several hours doing full run and you can do tabs only for one person at a time.
Not mentioning that there is much more low lvl characters then high levels and we would not do anything else just do full runs all the time, but we need also time for doing our own quests and leveling up.
Normal mobs in fbs you can kill easily with just 2-3 ppl in group on your lvl, but for bosses need usualy help as its realy hard to do some of them with group that just got quest.
What we do as guild its time from time do full run if needed, but encouraging ppl to try it alone or with just minimal help needed as just following lvl 70 doing fb19+ for you dont give you same experience as when you realy have to DO it. Later in game dungeons are much more harder and if dont have 1st hand experience with fbs, you can easily wipe whole team.
Expecting that when you need help with something everyone leave what they are doing and go to help you is just naive.0 -
I'd also like to add you can't really expect high levels to help your FB19 without you having your tabs, because that's what they get experience from.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0

even in item mall can often get cheaper mats than everyone else sells.
and i wouldnt buy hay even for 1k even if its price is 5k. u can farm all mats urself, why waste money?
and maybe better find guild that do full fb runs for u, cuz exp reward will seem big only at ur lvl not at higher lvl. and need only couple lvl 40's to run fb19 in 25mins, thats really not much time to help guild member get his exp and drops. good guild will help with those and even with higher lvl fbs without wine.0 -
-selling some equipment gives you peanuts. Some things like Manufacturing Materials can be sold for much more if you make a Cat Store.
-armor (maybe weapons) can be Disassembeld at the appropriate store. You get Yuyuan stones this way, which can be made into charms. I've seen them for sale for like 120 coin at cat stores too. So the 800 from selling stones is much better than the 40 you would get from selling to a blacksmith.0 -
At some point , i cant remember exact lvl, you will get a quest in archy called 'Crazy Stone'. I always see people selling the gems needed to complete the quest for double or even triple the price it takes to make the gems. Please do not buy these gems from player shops till you calculate how much it would cost you to make yourself. You can go to the merchant and buy the basic gems. Then combine basic gems to make the gems need to complete the quest.
To me this is one of the creepiest things a fellow player can do. They try to sell an item that can simply be purchase from NPC at considerable mark up just hoping for new player buy them. You see it all the time in MMORPGs. With all the drops a player gets and all the items a player acquires, that he can sell to a another player, which benefit both, someone would choose to do this is remarkable to me. That tactic must be highly profitable and noobs are buying, or you wouldnt constantly see those shops, so watch out.
People may misunderstand what I'm saying so i would just like to clarify, i am in no way bashing players for charging, what some may call overpriced for an item. If an item can only be acquired though quest or mob drop, or even item mall, it acceptable to charge whatever they feel a buyer will pay. That's free market and just cause the price seems outlandish to you doesn't mean it is. I am only talking about reselling items, that can easily be purchased at an NPC, to unsuspecting new players. Have you no shame?0 -
I have a question regarding dropped items due to PK or just dying to mob. Does it notify you that you dropped something? Does item drop on the ground where you can see it laying on ground beside your character or does item just disappear? Could you drop item revive on the spot a pick it right back up if it was valuable. Does dropped item have a timer to give you time to retrieve or is it open to anyone to pick up or does it have timer for player that PK you? Like when you kill mob you have timer to pick up drop. If someone PK you does your drop act like a mob drop and the person killing you has first right to pick up?0
-
I agree with the point about selling stuff you can get in stores. Selling Red Jades for 600 when they cost 140 at the Merchant. There is always a small chance though, that it is someone who hasn't found the Merchant and those are items he picked up, guessing how much it is.
I'm interested in the item dropping on death too. One thing I can say is I've seen an item up in the air among a crowd of high level monsters. I figured it was a player dropping something after they were killed by the mobs.0 -
In the chat window there's a notification what you've lost when you've died.
I don't know if you can pick it up again Oo[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
