So how does this look like? Are they just adding some dungeons that say "now you're 1000 years in the past", or do they actually put all new monsters, towns and NPCs on a map that's a 1:1 copy of the existing world map?

I think the idea of traveling back in time is a wonderful concept... unfortunately it is also incredibly easy to **** up. Past/Future/Alternate Reality versions of a game world can vary so greatly from really awesome to really terrible. Final Fantasy XI did a decent job with their Dynamus dungeons, which was an alternate reality future of the major cities in the game, but it was nothing spectacular. Other games have tried and failed with this concept.

I know it's not an MMO, but I believe that Chrono Cross is a prime example of influence for a concept such as this. But to be honest, if the expansion has been announced then it's already close to completion and suggestions on major development issues cannot be addressed on a large scale. I am hoping that they took the right path with this idea, though. It would be really cool to see items such as The Ancient Wall in their original, intact form.
