Brief Server Maintenance - Complete

10/22/08 -

We will be having a brief server maintenance tonight in which we will reduce the amount of spam that Duke is putting out during the Halloween Event.

The expected maintenance time will be 11pm PST.

This post will be updated with more information as it becomes available.

UPDATE:

As promised, the maintenance was short and the servers are already back up.

Duke Blacke will no longer spam for a majority of the rewards given from the Halloween Boxes. He will still announce when someone wins a Midnight mount.

The Spiritual Disciple, an NPC that was missing since the last patch has been restored on all servers.

    There was a multipage thread of Heaven's Tear people about to commit acts of wanton violence against the Duke to shut him up. It shouldn't take long for this to be fixed and the server to come back up.

    There is always something to improve on, but heavenshock is right... there was one yesterday. did you guys mess up something?

    OH! well in that case, I am all for it! thank you sooooooo much for b:shutup the duke... omg! b:angry it definitely needed to be done.

    Lol but its only a player, just get in the game as a GM and ban him : D...
    Or by the website...
    No need to shut down the server...

    Ah man... I just logged on, then all of a sudden BAM! mantinence. Oh well, if it shuts that Duke guy up I'll be glad lol. Thanks, PW team

    The Duke is not a player but an NPC. His shouts showed as system messages and he literally spammed the chat for the last 24 hours or so. I don't know how anyone was supposed to read chats normally with him! b:laugh

    Wanton violence == trying to beat with spiky or sharp things. Since the Duke is an NPC, that wouldn't work too well, but all the people trying could cause nasty slowdown when he migrates toward West Archosaur.

    Changes to NPCs usually require specialized tools, rather than the ones dedicated toward dealing with players.

    I'm not familiar with the server backend, but as a general rule, I've never had a good time making updates to hardware in active use. Even with dedicated devices like a Cisco 2800, you can end up with really nasty effects. Changing an active server executable goes from nasty to actively dangerous. It's a matter of safety.

    yeah im bored out of my mind waiting ...i was able to icnore it just like i do every one else chatting out loud all the time all you have to do is program duke to not send out system messages its not like every one wants to know about other ppl getting stuff
