Item loss on Heaven's Tear

I got killed by a monster today and for the first time I noticed that I dropped an item when I died. I did not realize item loss happened on the non-PvP server. I noticed it mainly because I was mining for crafting materials and it was my pickaxe that dropped (effectively ending my mining session). Is there any information available about how frequently this happens or why? I had thought that item loss was a PvP thing only.

Was your name red? If your name is red you have a chance to lose items even if you're killed by a mob.

    I disagree from personal experience:

Early in open beta, I was killed by a mob in Secret Passage, and lost a three-star weapon from my inventory. Fortunately one of my squad members picked it up and returned it.

My name was definitely not red, not even white: I have not enabled PVP ever, and do not intend to.

I don't have an official numbers, but from what I've seen posted around, players are reported a very rare rate of drop as a blue or white name and defeat by monster or player (on the scale of 1%), with the value drastically increasing for pink or red names.

I see this chart going around, although I have no ability to vouch for how accurate it is..

I also had this happen, fortunatly only a pickaxe as i was in fb39 dungeon and desided not to go back in, but i saw it on the ground before i revived that was the first / only time i have dropped anything on any of my three charaters
it was on my level 38 (at the time) cleric inside the fb39 dungeon
my name was blue, i dont have pvp enabled and never will

even if your name is white, as long as you die you have a chance of dropping something.

Chance increases as your redness of your name increases.

I've lost items when killed by a mob before. First time, it was just some yiyuan stones. No biggie there. The second time was all my refined steel I had farmed. That pissed me off.

What causes your name to change color? I know killing animals with green names(rabbits, pups, horses, etc.) immediately turns your name red, but will attacking mobs make your name change color?

I definitely consider myself lucky that it was only my pickaxe, but I am still annoyed that they made this a feature at all. I have never participated in PvP nor attacked any animals and really never thought I would have to worry about items dropping. I carry all my crafting materials with me since they stack and can be found all over and never thought I might have to worry about dropping an entire stack of them. I have a dozen and a half stacks of herbs in my inventory each with hundreds per stack. If I lost one of those I may very well be annoyed enough to quit the game. Item loss should not be a part of the PvE game.

On other hand this "feature" is nowhere anounced and if you can buy some realy expensive stuff from boutique with real money and then drop it, i gues some ppl will go as far as sue pwi with realy good chance to win.

You may miss that, but almost no one else does. There is a reason that no game ever bothered to follow Ultima Online's game strategy. The few enjoyed it, the majority did not.

And I have nothing against item loss, but that is what the PvP server is for. I am not complaining that this is a feature on the PvP server. I am complaining that it is a feature on the PvE server. We were never informed that item loss was a feature of the PvE game and I consider that important information when deciding whether to even bother playing a game at all. My inventory is sacred to me. I expect everything in it to remain exactly where I left it unless I make a change on purpose. Games that make it a feature to rob me at will have little interest to me when there are so many available that do not.

Not really possible to win that case. You don't own any items in the game, so (as far as I know) you can't be compensated for their loss.

Now, you would actually get so worked up over the loss of a virtual item that you would throw a temper tantrum and quit? Take a step back, try and take yourself out of that situation and see how silly that statement actually sounds.

I am not saying you (or even myself for that matter) wouldn't or shouldn't get a bit aggrevated if something like that happened, but really, it says a lot (and NOTHING flattering) about the state of our possession driven world that people actually get so worked up over these pixels as to let it bother them in real life.

I do agree that it would have been nice to know about this feature from the on-set instead of learning "trial by fire". But, it wasn't and now we know (I actually knew from other versions, but apparently none of the other ported versions knew about it either until players brought it up). So, I leave my valuables and mats in the bank when I am hunting. (Besides, storing them in the bank gives me more room for loot when I hunt!)

I disagree with you about item loss has no place in PvE. To believe that item loss should only occurr during PvP makes no logical sense unless you want an absolute, perpetually safe , no risk environment to hunt in. That "all reward with no risk" is rather lame and lazy. I don't mind item loss, but like I said, as long as it was known from the onset.
